What cheapskate thing did you do today?

I skipped the Sunday Paper, ate all meals at home (made a great roast chicken my "bought on clearance" G Foreman contact roaster), took a walk in Gettysburg, PA for free entertainment and hubby drove the fuel efficient death trap to get there. Guess it was a good day. Anyone watch the Pioneer Quest on PBS? I could live like that but would need bug spray! Kathy_PA

took a small packet of ground beef out of the freezer (you made that package way too small says DH) and threw together a beef vegetable soup in the crock pot. I am creating a new challenge for myself - to see how little amounts of meat I can use to make a meal and get away with without it being detected by the family....so far I've got it pared down by about a third and no one around here is any the wiser.

Got a dump-truck load of pea gravel delivered and made a $73 22'x12' patio. Only downfall is that it was raining all day. The dumptruck got stuck in the yard and I had to pull it out in my Jeep Wrangler. Neither the driver nor I thought I could do it, but it just goes to show a little Jeep can go a long way, even with a 10-wheeled truck attached to it. Now I gotta get some dirt and fix the yard though...

Went first to Sharp Shopper. Got some nice fresh veggies and a few other things. Then went to KMart. Got printer ink, and they are having the double coupon up to $2 again. I had two Hershey Bliss $1 coupons, so they were doubled. Yummy! Went to $Tree for a couple things, and then to Big Lots which is a couple store fronts from $Tree for light bulbs. Last stop was Krogers for Rx and groceries. Good buys on chicken tenders and stew beef. Used a coupon for free cookies: pound bag of Nutter Butters. Home to unload the car and put away the stuff and like GEM, I was pooped. I hit the recliner, tuned on the TV and went to sleep. You know how it is, you come in with a gazillion bags, and nothing for supper. Had leftovers. There are a few things still not put away and dishes in the sink. Oh, well. Again today, every where I went people were pleasant, but the conversations were mostly about having to count pennies. Weather was nice and sunny. Had the heater on going in, air on coming home. 7:00 helped 3 kids get ready for school laundry, did about 5 loads all together, folded and put in rooms bought 3 flats of flowers, dropped of recycling bought quite a few groceries, stuff for graduation did dishes, fed all the pets, cleaned one bathroom, made lunch, cleaned to microwave and scrubbed the vent nice and shiny, looked up food recipes for graduation, finished putting stuff back in living room after some big touch up painting. picked up one child from track, brought one child to softball, parent teacher conferences-met with 4 of 8 teachers. Drove dh around the countryside so he could move implements (they are planting corn, poor dh is sick :( with a terrible cold too) picked up softball child, went to wally world for meds and big bags of soil to amend my potting soil. made child 3 lunch for tomorrows field trip. filled out National FBLA form for oldest child, wrote out tomorrows list of things to do while tile guy is here (what a fun way to spend my B-day). I dunno what all else I did, it's sorta a blurr right now. 11:15 I like being here at the end of the day though. no more work until 6:30 am

You don't know me, but many hugs to you Debby. I cannot imagine the pain that you endure. I was going to say that I played mediator at work, smoothing co-worker's ruffled feelings. I had a great day seeing my co-workers. My dog had cancer surgery and I spent the past two weeks working from home. I really enjoy the days when I go to the office. I had a great heart to heart talk with my manager. It was a special and rare interaction and I treasured it. It sounds like my whole life is my job :-) I really love what I do for money and for that I am thankful.

First I made an appointment to get my teeth cleaned, I had to cancel a few weeks ago (go in every 4 months), & was surprised that she had two openings next Monday...which is very unusual. Wonder if The Great Recession is forcing people to cut back on dental work. Then I decided to take a long walk (5 miles up, 5 miles back) to our County Courthouse to do some genealogy research. A lady requested info on a great uncle who left home in Minnesota around the turn of the 20th Century, ended up in California, was rarely heard from again, changed his last name, and died here in 1964 at age 83. She was able to at least obtain a copy of his CA death certificate, but that was about it. The "exciting" part ws I was surprised to find a modest probate proceeding for him at the Courthouse, and since there were no known heirs, a nice sum of money was turned over to the State of California in 1966, which I believe his heirs are still entitled to. I don't know if interest is obliged to be paid by the State on this money, but it felt good to tell someone that they might be getting a little unexpected windfall. So I more than got my daily exercise in & also did my Good Deed for the day.

I tried to make a tasty pizza out of leftover spaghetti sauce and other ingredients I had on hand. The sauce was too sweet and my dh caught me putting carrots on as a topping. I don't think he would have liked the broccoli topping I was going to add either. Lately, I've been trying to use up foods on hand hand and make do or do without. We waste a lot of food around here.

Today I made some bran muffins and threw in some orange zest off a drying out orange...squeezed the juice from said orange and added that......also threw in some marashino cherry juice from a jar which mysterious is minus the cherries, added some shredded zucchini (three medium size firm ones from reduced basket at grocery store - 49 cents - shredded and froze the rest), tossed in some cinnamon sugar and flour left over from another baking project and saved in a small container.....so used bits and pieces of this and that...better to toss into muffins than toss into garbage. Bud.
