jute rug - two questions/concerns

I just purchased an 8 ft round braided jute rug in ivory for my family room and I love it. I was replacing a faux oriental rug that always looked grimy and showed every cat and dog hair. Plus the oriental pattern was a more formal look than I wanted for the room. The fibrous jute rug gives just the right amount of warmth without becoming country. So, I couldn't be more pleased. Meanwhile, I need an area rug for the three other rooms that together with the family room form a square on the main level of the house (not including the kitchen which is in the back and competely separate.) The four main rooms share the same wall color (ivory), floor color (walnut) and trim. So I got to thinking, since I love the rug so much, maybe I should get the same one for each of the rooms. Does anyone have identical area rugs throughout their house? I'm thinking it could either look cohesive and harmonious, or completely unimaginative and ridiculous. Also, two of the rooms where the rug would be - the sitting room and the dining room - have dupioni silk curtains - they are a bit more formal than the family room. I'm trying to imagine having silk curtains and a jute rug - again I'm thinking it might look ridiculous but on the other hand I've always liked rooms that mixed styles in an unexpected way; like a rustic farm table along with a crystal chandelier, for example. But maybe there is some "rule" about not mixing styles when dealing with fabric/fibrous materials. Anyway, I'd appreciate any opinions regarding duplicate rugs throughout a main floor, and mixing informal rugs with more formal fabric drapes. Thanks!

I do not think it would look completely ridiculous.

Jute is a good neutral. Many people put one color of carpeting throughout a number of connected rooms, so this is a similar idea.

Personally, I might put something more 'special' in the DR.

BTW, I remember well all the posts you had on the kitchen forum a couple years ago. Did you ever finish your kitchen? I never saw any photos? Did you actually use those incredible pulls you were talking about? I still think they were the most beautiful pulls ever!

What's the 4th room?

I love a jute rug for a FM.... for a DR, not so much.

I agree with Biochem, something a little more special would be nice for the Sitting room and Dining Room.

I have purchased many flat weave Soumak rugs since building our new home. The thicker wools have been moved to bedrooms, although one guest room has a Soumak. There are several makers, and as someone stated above - some are thicker than others. DD2 just purchased a Surya rug for her bedroom. It is not quite as thick as mine, but fine for her bedroom. I do not know who made our great room rug - my favorite - as the local store I purchased it from removes the tags (can't go online to shop that way and compare prices!). The foyer, dining room and breakfast room rugs are by Kalaty and the guest room rug is by Loloi (tad thinner than Kalaty rugs). As they said above, pet hair does not show as much as regular wool rugs (MBR and another guest room rugs are Karastan - fur magnets) and what is there just doesn't seem to show. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats. Kids are adults now, and I have two grandchildren. DD2 called me 3 days ago asking how to get cat vomit off her new rug (not the "food" kind, but more liquid). She blotted, while I drove over - 10 minutes. She did not have any of the Suyra rug cleaner, but we used Spot Shot and it got everything up - and her rug is gray and white. The painters were at my house, and one came down off the ladder. Thought he was at the floor, but had one more step. He stepped backwards and knocked over his soft drink (styrofoam w/lid). Some spilled and my first thought was crap, but it beaded up and wiped right up. I've bought the better rug pads to go under ours. Ordered DD2 from Amazon dealer. One for an 8x10 was less than $50. I would definitely use a rug pad. The rugs don't walk, but on hardwood, they can slip n slide. I have a central vacuum system and have always used my beater attachments on the rug (set on low pile). I did a lot of research on natural fiber rugs last year. I was primarily concerned with durability, and ended up with seagrass. Jute is softer, but it sheds and is not water repellant the way seagrass is. It is my understanding that seagrass and sisal are the most durable. I bought a large 9x12 rug fom pottery barn for very little. I don't have a cat, but do have a large dog and 2 small kids. It still looks practically brand new, and it has dog vomit and urine on it. (I feel compelled to say that neither were from MY darling pooch. ;-) ). It isn't soft underfoot, and I really hesitated on whether it would be appropriate in our living room. But we don't mind it, and my kids still sprawl out on it with no complaints. It did make my house smell like hay for a good week. That didn't really bother me though, as it reminds me of my grandfathers farm.

Not crucial, far from it. Just a matter of preference. Some people find it easier to bag than rake up the debris, but it makes no difference in the final outcome. >>>I'm planting Tall Fescue. There are three types of power rakes/de-thatchers: Tine, flail and fixed blade. Tines have very little ground engagement capability, they are uncommon on gas powered equipment but nearly all electric powered power rakes/de-thatchers have them. If you happen to come across one for rent, most shops will charge you for broken tines which run about $3-8 each. They cannot be used for slit seeding. Flail have slightly more ground engagement capability than tines but are not designed for that use. They are a fairly common rental machine and are gas powered. They cannot be used for slit seeding. Fixed blade can be used for ground engagement (up to approximately 1/2-1" deep) and can be beneficial for softening the soil surface for good seed/soil contact especially when rolled post seeding. Tey are gas powered and also often available at rentals. These machines are rugged and double as slit seeders.

Thanks again everyone for all the helpful tips! I'll stay away from Jute for sure now even though I like the look of it. Seagrass could work well for the decor but I'm concerned about one spot ruining the whole thing (pet) where a pattern can hide things better. Extra thanks for the mention of Joss & Main - their search engine for rugs is much better than all the others and prices seem good but sometimes better on Overstock and other places. Most places make you work very hard to see a size/price combo when all you want to see is the biggest sizes.

We have a jute rug in our entryway and I really like it. I have noticed, however, lately that the jute ends come undone and started sticking out in the middle of the rug. I've managed to fix this by taking a screwdrive and basically pushing the end back in. Not sure if this is a common problem or just a problem with my particular jute rug (got it CostPlus). It looks great, but it's a bit annoying to fix the ends constantly. Anyway, so, as much as I love the jute rug, I don't think I could handle 4 of them. Good luck!

Biochem, good memory! Yes, we've been "officially" done with the kitchen for a year now. Hard to believe we broke ground exactly three years ago this month. My oldest had just finished elementary school, and now he is graduating from 8th grade and off to high school in September! I took a break from the kitchen forum because the project became derailed so many times, it was extremely stressful. I needed to take a break. After our final payment to the contractors, we were really spent both emotionally and financially, and did absolutely nothing with the house, decor wise, for a year. No window treatments, nothing on the walls. Now I'm ready for another project and would really like to get the rest of the house to look as good as the kitchen. Yes, those bar pulls were beautiful, but we didn't end up using them. As the project went on, I was more and more drawn to very industrial looking fixtures and hardware, the clunkier the better. I ended up with cup pulls (I forget from where) that have the exposed screw head on the outside. Also my icebox latches have exposed screws. Anyway, I've done some google searches on jute rugs, and saw a nice picture of one in a room with silk curtains. So I know it can work, but I see what people are saying about something a little..fancier? more refined? in the sitting room and dining room. Also there are some negative comments re: the ability to clean a jute rug (i.e., you can't). So I'm a little worried about that. Monablair, the fourth room is, for lack of a better word,the entry hall. The front door opens directly into it, but unlike a foyer, it is a whole room, the same size as the others, with a staircase and a fireplace. We 've always been kind of frustrated by it, because it felt like wasted space (we do put our Christmas tree in this room.) Then we got the idea this very weekend to move our antique upright piano into the room, thus giving our sitting room space for a sofa, and giving the entry hall an actual purpose! It's not absolutely ideal - the only spot for the piano was against a side wall partially blocking a window,but it works and the alternative was getting rid of it, so I'm really happy we moved it. So I'm trying to envision a different rug for the sitting and entry rooms, but with a cohesive look and similar color tone (natural to ivory), that would blend well with the jute. Any thoughts?

Can you post pics of the rooms? They sound very intriguing. Especially the kitchen. All the top end designers use those natural fiber rugs all the time. There is one you see constantly with this diamond pattern in all the magazines. So I think they could work with silk curtains definitely.
