1/2 hp Craftsman works, dies, works, dies

My remotes and wall wired (single button) switch were working intermittently and now not at all. It is very cold out, and I have seen other postings that address the cold.

The green light on the wall wired switch has been getting more and more dim and occasionally is out completely. Finally I unplugged it for 30 minutes and it worked fine for about 1/2 of the day. Then it died again. Unplugged, worked, died, etc.

Suggestions? diagnosis?

Sounds like you might have a bad wall control. Try disconnecting it and see if your remote works.

Left the door open overnight since then does not work. It has been very cold. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone, I know i sound like a tape recorder but my craftsman 1/2 hp has been working fine for 3 yrs. Not sure what happened to the remotes, but they stopped working. I first tried replacing the batteries but after that didnt work i went out and brought two brand new up to date chamberlain klik3u universal garage remotes. Retail 40 bucks per. They say in the manual they are compatible to my garage opener which was manufactured in 1997. They wont program as well. My garage opens and closes fine. I guess im here to find out if anyone has any other trouble shooting facts to program because the "press the red button like a door bell, hit the button you want programmed" basics isnt working for me. I called chamberlain about the remotes and they basically told me go jump in a lake, all our remotes program fast and easy!!! I need help ppl. Plzzzzz

If your door sensors were bad the main light would flash 10 times. I think the up limit switch is never touching the contact so that the logic board will not reverse. You will find the up limit control on the side of the motor unit. Turn this 3 complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover and give it a try.

Sounds like your logic board might be going on the fritz. If you think you might want to replace it yourself, I can tell you where NOT to buy it. I recently bought one from Ontario Supply in New York from their web site for $60. Unfortunately, it has turned out to be defective and they won't refund my purchase price even though I sent the defective unit back at my own cost. So, don't buy from them, they don't deal fairly in my opinion. I think you're best off just calling a local repair service and let them replace the board. If you replace the board yourself and it does not work, you're just going to end up calling a repair service anyway. I have the exact same problem! The battery died in my remote so I changed the battery. The other remote had a dead battery for a while, so I changed that one at the same time. Neither remote will work outside of a 3 foot range now. Really doesn't help when I'm outside the garage in the pouring rain. We tried everything here and nothing worked at all. We did call Sears since I seemed not to be the only one with the problem, thinking they may have a work around for it. All the operator wanted to do was send a repairman. My husband finally wired up an antenna to the GDO and ran it across the ceiling and barely stuck the ends outside of the garage door. I have to pull right up to the door before I can open it, as the range is still very short, but it's better than having to get out of the car and use the keypad - which never worked well either!

Follow up to Don's advice: I tried to disconnect the wall switch and use the remotes--no good. Then I replaced the wall switch with a new doorbell and it works erratically. Sometimes not at all, sometimes halfway up, sometimes just fine. If I unplug it for a long period of time, it works best, but not necessarily great. Remotes are totally unresponsive now.
Still stumped. Maybe I need to call someone out.

Just after I hit "send" on my reply (above), I tried the remote and it worked halfway. Now not at all.

I have purchased the Keyless entry for that opener (mind you, I live in EDMONTON where it can easily be -30 and no problems, other than ice) - but I cannot make the pad work. I was wondering if you had any advice there, Don, the learn button works, the pad lights up, but after the four numbers, and hitting ENTER, nothing - it does not work. I've replaced the battery, and tried lots of things like using the remotes to set the pad - but still nothing. PLease help - jocky
