Did you check behind the beige curtains all over the hem, side seams and top to see if there was a tag somewhere? If you did,or even if you can't, I would see if I couldn't find some that were similar in color and style, and put those behind the bed.

If that isn't an option then I would widen the rod behind the bed so it is as wide as the headboard. Use the dark blue curtains on either end, and get white panels for the center. It will feel like it belongs with the bedding, and will show off your headboard a bit more than having nothing but dark fabric behind the dark headboard.

I think you could use a decorative single pillow on the bed that pulls in some of the tan color from the drapery, as well as the blue. Maybe something like one of these, to work with your art

Not liking the little shelf unit - small like that or bigger, it seems to make the corner feel crowded. Sometimes some empty space is as valuable.

The lamps are meant to be close to bed for convenience, both for reading and for turning off. My issue with the lamps is that compared to the headboard, they feel short and small. Plus they feel very dark. Perhaps down the line you could consider replacing them with something like this, that has the beiges and whites, and hints of blue tones, that would bring a bit of sparkle to balance all the dark wood:

les-thanks for some ideas. I'm just stuck on these curtains because I don't really want to buy another curtain to replace the tan one, but I know I can't use the blue curtain.
I did think about buying the same quilt in a twin, and using that material, front or back, for a curtain...but that might look goofy?

I really like the butterfly pillows. I am still trying to find a white quilt/coverlet so I can pair some nice white decorative pillows with this. I just brought home thebedding on Wed night, and have been running around like crazy trying to get this room done!

That lamp isn't showing a pic for me. I would love to see other idea on better lamps. I guess lamps are like art, they have to just really hit you right (or really work right in the room). The lamps are like the tan curtains...was hoping not to replace then due to cost :(

I have two bedrooms with a similar high single window. Is there any way you can put your bed opposite the large window? I would like to see the small window as a design feature. I know you want to keep the light out, but I love how mine look with the blinds up. We get a view of trees and it is almost like a "living" picture. You can do a sun blocking shade that can be pulled up during the day.
If you can't move the bed, I still say a short black out shade with the possibility of matching it to your spread.

I agree with Les about putting a longer curtain rod behind the bed so that the curtains are the same width as the bed. If you want to keep the tan curtains, I would just find more tan panels that are similar. I don't think that you would notice that they are not exact matches as long as they are close enough.

I do not care for the shelf. I think it is too crowded in that corner.

I think the lamps are fine. If you have extra money, there are better options, but I wouldn't be in a rush. I do like the ones Les linked.

I also like the pillow Les linked--but I am cheap--so that wouldn't be a necessity for me.

As far as hanging the prints above the nightstands--I don't know how you would do it. I wonder if the scale is too small to make it work. When i have seen art above night stands, it has been larger or something like a long vertical mirror where it can overlap the lamp.

Yes, run the behind-the-bed curtain so that it is at least as wide as the bed. In our last house, we had an off-center window behind the bed, and we put in a skinny wardrobe on each side of the bed (beyond the nightstands), and then hung a heavy tan velvet curtain between the wardrobes. It looked like a swanky hotel. We got SO many compliments on it! Before the curtain, we had hated that window with a passion, but the end result was lovely.

Our velvet curtains were from Ikea, by the way. They were about 1/4 the price of similar ones from Pottery Barn.

Oh how I wish the bed (and nightstands) would fit on another wall, but this is the longer of the walls by 6 inches, and all 3 other walls have a door there or opening there. The window wouldn't be a big deal if I had a queen bed that could then be centered, but a queen bed wasn't really an option.
I do like the idea of having the curtain extend the full width of the bed. I did find a tag for the other curtains (Country Curtains) so I will check them out. Would my best bet be to do the same tan, or find a patterned curtain, like a stripe? I do think both curtains being the same is the best. What about the height difference of the curtains, is that a big deal?

Is the corner really alright without anything? I didn't really want to put a fake plant there, but not having to decorate the shelf thing would be alright also.

Would the pictures look better with slimmer lamps? That wall feels weird to me without any pictures on the wall. And I didn't think that picture would work in the room, but really like it now.

Is it possible to get photos of the two windows with the drapes opened? I ask because perhaps you could move the bed in front of the larger window and then use the smaller window as a decorative point as Ellendi mentioned. If not then you definitely need to get a larger rod and go that route. I personally like my drapes to match so I would try to find more of the tan ones if you can.

Debbie-I went with Sherwin Williams Monorail Silver. I do kind of wish I would've done BM Boothbay Gray, but the Monorail Silver is growing on me, especially with adding more things in the room, like the bedding.

Verti-The wall with the large window is my only other choice. When looking at that wall though, there is a closet to the left a few inches from the corner of the wall. It is a small closet with my clothes only. I am afraid there won't be enough room to open the door and get in the closet! BUT, I think I may try moving the furniture and seeing if this would work. Maybe I will try that tomorrow (when DH is at work...) . If so, I will post pics on this thread, assuming I don't throw my back out...otherwise, I would have to post pics after back surgery! The window behind the bed now has recently been stripped, so if it worked, I would need to decide if I wanted to go ahead and stain it, or repaint...we'll just see if I can get the furniture moved first.

Thanks for all the compliments on the furniture and bedding...I am loving having a space for us to retreat to with a mattress not on the floor...After 3 kids, I finally feel like I'm growing up ;)

I love, love, love your bedding! And the color on your walls. As for lamps, I would not be in a rush to replace. You may be able to place some of those pretend book boxes underneath them to get your heighth. I would, however, check at your local Homegoods, TJMaxx, Marshall's, or Ross for some accent pillows. They often have the Pottery Barn knockoffs for a fraction of the price. As for the corner, I would not put anything there. There is already so much competing for attention in the room that leaving it empty will be fine. I look forward to seeing the finished product!

I like your idea of buying the same quilt and using it as a wall hanging (not necessarily drapes) behind your bed. The bedlinen pattern is very nice.

Is there any chance that the tall bureau could fit elsewhere in the room? It does seem to crowd the bed.

OK, I am going to go out on a limb here. By using such a long drape, double lined, I am assuming that you never want to use this window? Would you consider sheet rocking over it? We have done this is two different houses. We added a bathroom to our current house which was actually the back of the garage. It had a small window that didn't make sense for the bathroom. In another case we sheetrocked over a wall of windows to give us privacy from nieghbors. In both cases, we painted the window so that from the outside it looked like a shade. If ever someone wants the window, it is easy to undo.
I know it is just me but I just don't like two walls of drapery.

Okay, I moved the bed, and there is just barely enough room to get into the closet, but I can live with that. I didn't move the dresser and chest, not sure if the dresser should move across the bed to the shorter wall? I just moved everything, but now I am really not sure about picture placements. My pics aren't very good because I can't get the camera zoomed out enough. Sorry.

The following picture is a small section of our nursery. The rooms on the main floor of the house have stained trim and white trim for the top. I stripped the small window (still a little work left) in preparation for this, so if the bed is left as is, would need to either repaint it or stain it, in which case I would do the bottom trim stained also. I think the white trim would look nice, but would love to take the opportunity to have the room flow from the other rooms on the main floor. Opinions?

ellendi-thanks for the suggestion. Sheetrocking either window is NOT an option. The big window was replaced by us when we move here, and faces the front of a brick house, with a matching window on the other side of the door (outside, but in the living room). The smaller window is the only opening window in the room. Also we are out in the country, so no need to worry about that :)

After looking at the arrangement with the bed against the big picture window, I am not sure I like the setup in the room. DH doesn't like that I am covering the nice large picture window, not that we open the curtains a lot, but...
I am wondering if I should move the bed back, but center it with the small window (using a roman shade inside the window). The window is about 6 inches close to the wall with the picture window than the wall that has the chest now. Then I could leave the dresser across from the bed and on the wall with more space for it. I would have 13 inches from the right nightstand to the wall, and about 14 inches from the right side of the bed to the chest. I
would be fine with that spacing between the bed and the chest, but not sure about if I would be happy with the footboard coming 1 foot closer to the door?
The small window width would match the width of the middle section on the headboard of the bed.
Also, any opinions on staining the small window and lower trim or keeping white? We are in a brick tudor home in the country that was built in 1936. My daughters very large bedroom upstairs has white trim around the base, but this is the only room and a very small hallway on the main floor that has white trim around the base and door trim. I am having a party in a month, and want to do it, but not sure if I really want to start a project now. The picture window trim is stained, and if I moved the furniture back, centered with the small window, I would probably split the picture window curtain into 2, so that it could be opened during the day.
I just wish this room were easier to work with!

If it were me, I think I would put the bed back on the wall where you first had it. It seems too squashed where you moved it.
I would remove that little corner shelf-table completely.
I think I would probably paint that little window trim white seeing that your crown and some other trim is white.
I would then try to get a real or fake working Roman shade in a tan color like other drapes for the small window.
Do you have to cover that little window for light coming in or is it just for the look.

I see where your husband is coming from. I would not want to cover the picture window either.

Here are the options I would consider and just go with whatever ended up looking best to me:

(1) Move the bed in front of the small window, raise the curtain rod to the ceiling and put the tan curtains on that rod, making sure that the top of the curtains went to the ceiling and covered the top of the window--this would mean putting the rod on the crown--which is the one thing that makes me question if this is the right thing to do. Also, extend the rod the width of the bed--so the curtains both go to the ceiling as well as fill the entire space behind the bed.

Then I would move the picture window curtain rod up higher and put new panels on either side than can be opened or closed. You would need new panels as the existing ones would then be too short once you move the rod up higher--plus they would now be on the small window beside the bed.

you could put the butterfly pics on either side of the picture window if the scale is right.

(2) Alternatively, with the bed in front of the small window, you could do some type of tapestry, that again starts at the ceiling and covers the entire window and space above the bed. Maybe made from a twin size quilt, like you suggested.

(3) Finally, consider the roman shade--however, i am not sure if the scale might be too small. But if you got a really nice fabric and had the shade lowered--the decorative effort may be just as good or better than the curtain or large fabric. And then you could put artwork on either side of the window. If you go this route then I would either paint the window trim the same as the crown or use a more contrasting stain--something darker than what it is now.

In any event, from what I can see of the room, it looks like the curtain rod with the tan curtains should be higher. However, I can't see any pics of it straight on, so it may be just fine. And perhaps some artwork flanking that window.

OH, I just thought that if you want the bed in front of the small window and want long panels, you could ceiling mount the rod so that the panels go to the ceiling and cover the window--and then the rod won't need to be put on the crown moulding.

If you do the roman shade, mirrors flanking the window or some type of metal art might look nice and make it look like the whole thing was planned that way.

Kristin-In your option 3, are you thinking something like a roman shade made out to the front or back of the quilt fabric with the butterfly pics on either side of the small window above the bed? Also, when you say contrasting stain, are you thinking a dark wood stain, or a painted color?

I think I'd look for a stained or leaded glass window to hang over top of the little window. It could be in a frame and hinged so you could open the window at night...you could even mount a pull down shade behind it if you really need more light control. Then you could use it as a decorative element, either on its own or with other art in an arrangement at the head of the bed.

This may sound really dumb but....could you have a mirror cut to fit the window...the frame of the window would be the frame of the mirror and then you could put some pictures/scounces on either side. OR Find a painting/art peice that is the size of the window and hang it over the window...not sure how far it would stick out?? Then two smaller pictures on either side of it. You would not be able to use the window but since you have the big picture window, you would have enough light. It looks like a mirror or a picture would be the right height over your bed when moved under the window.

I didn't really have any specific thoughts about the fabric for the roman shade. I think I would figure out what the artwork would be on either side,
then go from there.

If the scale of the butterfly art works, that would be great. Then the roman shade could be a nuetral color.

If you decide on mirrors or some type of metal sculpture, then maybe a fabric with a busier pattern.

you can buy a plain roman shade, and there are tutorials on how to cover it with a fabric of your choice (no sew). You could use a curtain, shower curtain, table cloth, or fabric bought by the yard--where ever you find a pattern you like.

As far as the finish on the window. I would either paint the same white as the crown molding. Or I would stain it to match the other window--I am assuming the stain is not a natural color stain, but a darker stain than what the small window trim is now.>

I like the stained glass idea too. And I thought of covering the window with artwork--but that may not work as the window goes up so high that it would probably look off scale to have artwork hit the ceiling.

I am good at having ideas--but often my ideas do not look as good as i envisioned them. So for me, I would probably have to buy multiple things and try them out and return. You don't even want to know how long I have been working on my great room (dining and living)--and its still far from finished!
