Things to consider when doing a Master Suite addition.

I am planning to put on a Master Suite to include a sitting area, bath with dual sinks, jetted tub, seperate shower and toilet stalls, and a walk in closet. I have a simple A frame now and will just turn a new A the opposite direction and come right off the side of the house with this room. Does anyone have any layouts or recommendations that may give me a better feel of how to tackle this project?

How many sq feet you planning on doing, what will be the bathroom area sq feet, also a rough layout of how it will attach to the existing house with what rooms or area it is connected ,will help me giving some idea ( I build quite allot room additions)

Example of 20 x 20 room addition, will be 12 x 20 living area while remaining 8 x 20 will be for closet and bathroom it will give you long living area where you can have your master bed and a corner of sitting area, or you can use it for any other purpose.

The dimension I mention above could be changed to any size that may fit you, larger room smaller bathroom larger bath smaller closet ( you get the idea) ÂÂº

There are many variables to consider such as tie in to have it look as an original, integral part of the house.The property surrounding the area of the addition,existing layout transforming into new are just a few of the considerations that a professional architect/structural engineer could help you out with a consultation.Other considerations include mechanical, electrical, plumbing and sewer/septic tie ins and how the room will face to the sun in different seasons etc.Structural concerns play in as well. Get a pro's advise!

Sorry, we've been cleaning and moving into the new bathroom. I'll have pix over the 4th. My old closet was a little smaller-5'8" by 9'10". The problem is more the shape. I could'nt get to the back third! Perhaps if I was more organized?? I like the walkthroughs Terriks posted. How old/many kids? Could you get away with a minimal laundry area? Stack the WD and have a folding sorting table with hanging above? You could put that directly at the hall door and that would leave options for the remainder of the space. I would expand the closet into that space and give myself a bathtub. With a door into the laundry. Or if you aren't a bath person you could have a bigger closet or shower or a private water closet so two can be in the bathroom. More to consider

I'd say the cost of building is below the national average in my 'hood. To answer the question tho, I think this 'hood would support a $200k addition/remodel but my house probably would not. Vague, I know. I had another builder come by a few days ago and he had some decent suggestions. I guess I'm just going to wait and see what the bids look like and go from there. I could be WAY off base with what I think it might cost and forget the whole thing. I did forget to mention that my brother is a cabinet installer for a big-box home improvement store and he said he can install my kitchen and bath cabinets at no cost so that will save quite a bit. There are a couple of other minor areas or work that my dad and/or I can do too to save a few bucks. Ever penny counts, right!?

After talking with husband and builder they would prefer not to do a bump out if we can avoid it. So new idea is to make the addition 18'x26'. Here is a current plan which is really like! 12'x18' bedroom, no door looking at bed, sizable closet, roomy bathroom, etc. The only problem is I can't seem to find a spot to put the furnace. :/ Inside the closet is ideal, but it can not be placed in the tan area. This is making it difficult. Anyone have any suggestions? I've got the furnace off to the right side so you can copy and paste. I would be open to pushing the closet 2 foot back into the current office/bedroom as long as the builder was willing. This appears to be the only good option that I can think of.

Number three is what I am leaning towards as well. I agree with having windows added to the sides if they bedroom, the more natural light the better :) We’ve decides to work with an architect for the exterior work and I think they will review the inside. I think that’s a great idea to move the bedroom entry past the laundry, I hadn’t thought of that. When the kids are old enough to their own laundry that will be much nicer!

keep in mind also tha tyour HVAC system is likely sized for your current home layout. you will need new ducts to the addition, and may even need to upgrade both the condensor and the evaporator. have them run a manual j onthe whole house with the proposed addition to verify proper sizing.
