Sticker shock Help and YEA counter tops are in

Good thing first here it is.

I'm liking the tile for add backsplash.

New curtains and I think they may go good.

Ok Now the sticker shock. We got an estimate for removing popcorn ceiling, texure ceiling and painting for three rooms and hallway that goes two ways kind of L shape. It is about 1230 sq. ft. Remove wall paper on half a wall and a few other things on list nearly 7000.00 :O oh my goodness. I hate to paint over the popcorn ceiling but at the cost of 4200.00 just for taking it down is it worth it?

Take heart. That price is VERY high and sounds like the guy doesn't want the job. I once had a walkway and patio quoted at $75K when it ended up costing me $25K. The project was too small for the guy so he gave me an outrageous bid. Try getting others, I'm sure you'll find some more reasonable.

$4200 just to take the popcorn down?! IMO, that is a very easy DIY job - its messy and tedious, but not hard at all. Redoing the ceiling is harder, but just scraping off the popcorn is not that bad. I helped my friend's mom do her whole house in high school - we had no skill, just time and patience.

How on Earth can people NOT want the job in this economy? I wish I had that kind of luxury.

I spill espresso and coffee grounds on my Carrara all the time without any staining, etching, etc. Marble does not stain easily as previously mentioned if it is properly sealed. Etching, sure. Staining, no. I do have one very, very faint stain under my espresso machine when my DB and his wife tried to use the machine when I wasn't home. They didn't really know how to work the machine and made a mess. I thought I cleaned it all up until 8-9 days later when DH moved the heavy unit a bit and I saw a huge puddle of dried espresso. Apparently they did some damage to the machine and it had a slow, unnoticeable leak--underneath. And btw, I knew you weren't really planning to use the board for cutting. ;)

granite counter-top seams ... are we being too picky?

These are my pics of my countertops placed Friday June 22, 2018. I cried looking at these seams. It looks so cheap. Fabricator explains that's the way it comes. I explained that I shouldn't be able to see the seams so clearly. It looks so unprofessional. They ended up taking them back to their warehouse. In hopes they say if it is quality control will try and fix it just to make it look better. Otherwise I will have to pay an additional fee for them to come out again to install. I just don't know what to do and if still looks the same. This is the first time I've replaced my counters in 24 years. I don't and can't live with it. looking at this for another 24 years. It looks so cheap and it really was not it's a lot of money to me. I hope fingers crossed that they will fix this problem. They never told me that there would be such seams. I thought the edges were done by a machine and it would be all one piece. I have read up on this and now understand there are seams. But now I do know that they should not look like this. If they are good fabricator you shouldn't be able to see them so clearly. I will find out next week what happens.

Honed finishes are much more difficult to live with. Although the material itself is stain proof, the texture of the honed finish makes cleaning more difficult. It holds on to dirt in the larger pores. But what is really annoying is the fingerprints from your hand oils. Silestone quit manufacturing the honed finish once already because of the complaints. Are you sure that you're looking at current sample pieces?

I wanted a whiter granite too. Most I saw did not look quite right with my flooring or cabinets unit I found what is called Ibiza or Mirabeles granite. It took quite a search and I did find one that is more white/cream than brown/gold. I also found that most of the granite yards I went to told me that they would price match any granite I found (per square foot) I am in the southern most part of PA and looked at several yards around Baltimore. Get more quotes and keep your options open. I have found most of the whiter granites in this area are under 100.00 per square foot. I paid 75.00 per square foot. The price matching helped bring it down slightly as did the fact that I purchased my own sink off of ebay and was open to an install date. The granite looks beautiful and install went well. It helped that the installers stated that my GChad one of the best and most level cabinet installs he had seen in a long time and the fact that the walls were almost completely square. The counter installers said that having the cabinets installed right makes the biggest difference in how the countertop install goes.

We have popcorn to remove also. I have done one room so far. It is messy but not hard at all. Not at all. I'd say consider removing it yourself. You spray it with water (I used my DD water bottle that she uses for her hair) and then you scrape the popcorn off with a scraper. When I did it I let the popcorn yuck fall into a small garbage pail. It isn't bad at all. The hardest part is keeping your arms up over your head while standing on a ladder for awhile.

That quote is absurd by the way. You can teach a teen ager how to remove the popcorn and pay them a fraction.

Does the popcorn ceiling have asbestos in it? That may be why the bid is so high. If you DIY, test the ceiling first.
I like the new granite. You must be thrilled to have it in.

It was put up in 87 when the house was built so I don't think it has asbestos in it.
I did our very small bathroom and it's not hard but our living room ceiling is 12' high with the rest of the house 10' high. DH doesn't have the time and I can't do it due to bad back and nerve damage in my hands.
We're taking care of my dads two homes also on the weekends. He's in a nursing home.
Guess we're stuck with the popcorn.

BTW, I had asked in the beginning about taking down the popcorn and was told it cost a lot. You maybe right that he doesn't want to do it.

I'd look for a college kid if you can wait till May when they are out of school. Or maybe a H.S./college kid that has time on the weekend.
