Actually I live in South Dakota. I grew up in Minneapolis, it is way colder here due to the terminal north winds. It can be done in northern climates if you have a well insulated house and properly placed windows. So far this year the only times we have turned on the furnace was when it was going to be -10F for an extended period of time. If it is only going to get to the teens at night and was at least 20F during the day we don't need any heat at night. It might get down to 54-60F in the house by morning but between the space heater and morning activities it is warm enough in less than an hour. I think people find this so hard to believe because they have been convinced otherwise. Take baby steps to cut your heat loss or lower your thermostat. The key seems to be having a well insulated house and either southern or east/west big windows. Everything in our house is contractor grade and it was built about 2001. Insulated drapes make a huge difference in keeping heat in.
