Does it feel odd at first????

Friday was my last day to work as a teacher. I found myself lingering around the school, sitting at my desk, playing with the compter, looking through my filing cabinets at the things that I treasure that I am leaving to the girl that is taking my place. Thank God she was a good friend of my daughter's before she was killed.

Anyway, I feel so odd. Everyone expects me to be ecstatic, but I can't say that I am. My husband, especially, wants me to be so happy, but for some reason, I just feel kind of odd and I can't really put my finger on what it is. Maybe it is too soon. My husband and I have so many plans, and I do look forward to that and many other things, but I hope I don't miss my job. Can anyone relate to this??? What in the world is wrong with me??????

Nothing wrong...nothing at all. You are leaving an old friend for the very last time. No matter what the future may hold, you will miss teaching, with it's good and bad, just as much as you would miss someone who moved away. You have invested a lot in the relationship.

Now, if you hated your job, and dreaded going to work each day, I suspect you would feel differently. You would not miss it at all.

Thanks Aileen for the wise response. I think that you are absoultely correct. Today I have been feeling much better, and I am sure as the time goes by, I probably won't even want to go back except for short visits. My workplace is only 3 minutes from my house, so I can run in now and then to visit the friends that I have grown to love.... without having to watch the clock!!! :)

I am so glad to have found this web site. I am 49 and have been experiencing much of the same symptoms that you are explaining. I have been going through menopause for about 2 years now. Like many I have been experiencing the common menopause symptoms Ã¯Â¿Â½hot flashes, insomnia, forgetfulness, etc. but recently I have had onset of headaches and a feeling in my head that I can only describe as "an odd feeling". To best describe it, I feel a lot of pressure in my head- between my eyes. I have difficulty at times concentrating and focusing. Then periodically, and very unpredictably I have these "spells" that I can best describe as "waves" of unsteadiness. It feels like that carnival ride you take where you are standing along a wall in a cylinder Ã¯Â¿Â½ the wall spins and the bottom drops out from under your feet. These spells / waves of unsteadiness can last only seconds but have lasted as long as several minutes. The most severe spell I have had occurred just recently. I felt as though I was going to fall. I actually was walking and began leaning to one side- or I felt like I was. Although I cannot describe the room as spinning I could not visually focus and it was as though I was visualizing things cross eyed. I felt as though I was having a stroke. I could speak clearly and talk appropriately but was unable to walk a straight line and had to actually hold on to something for fear of falling. I recently had an MRI of the brain Ã¯Â¿Â½ it was normal.

My miracle cure or prevention is grapefruit seed extract. It comes in a liquid extract or pills. The liquid drops are very bitter but it's more versatile and I don't run out as often. I dissolve some Airborne in a few ounces of water or warm water with honey and add 10-15 drops of grapefruit seed ext. and chug-a-lug it down or you can take the pills. I can't remember when I had a cold or flu get past the tickle in my throat, it's been years and I never take flu shots and haven't had the flu either. Cautionary note: Some people are allergic to grapefruit but I don't know anyone who is.

I don't know if anyone is really reading this thread anymore but I am always surprised when there is something questionable on the Building a Home, Remodeling or other threads, and people ask "Did an architect /designer design that?" The answer is "Sure they did". I think it's a big misapprehension that just because someone has a degree that they are particularly talented. For every profession, those who finish the degree managed to meet the criteria for graduation and possibly for licensure. But within that class there were people who were above average, average and below average, and there are just as many people below the 50th percentile than there are above. And the individual who designed the above is going to be the least likely person to say to a client "This is why this will not look right" --because to them it probably looks just fine, they designed it. In this case the OP does not think it looks fine, but most lay people do not know how to look at flat drawings and understand why something like this will not look fine in real life, because most lay people need to see things in three dimensions. And unfortunately, by the time it is three dimensional, it is too late to do anything about it very easily. The architect in this case probably knew exactly what this would look like in three dimensions and does not have a problem with it. Am I that cynical that I think that people really have trouble figuring out what something will look like from a drawing or even a photo? Yes, I think we are losing that ability. I have had two clients not even recognize their own furniture in a photograph when it was not in the context of their own houses. There have been entire books written about how people are losing this ability. And realistically it does push most of the trend buttons. A towering facade, lots of oversized stacked windows, a reference to the Palladian arch--all the things that people seem to want in new construction. This architect is probably good at plugging in all the popular design elements. Unfortunately, in my opinion, s/he is not good at making something that works well with what is already existing. And quite honestly, I think most clients would probably be quite happy to have an addition that was composed of all the most popular design elements no matter what it looked like in relationship with the old part of the house. If most people did want to achieve complete harmony in the design and decor of their houses over time and in the big picture, we would not see this sort of discordant disconnect all the time, and yet we do see it all the time.

Thank you guys for all the amazing ideas and suggestions! I cant really change the cabinets, but I can definitely add some color by changing the bar stools. I love the idea of having colorful pots around. Definitely adds the zing I am looking for. The chickens were meant to add some fun elements to the kitchen. I am a 25 year old home owner. I did not want the kitchen to look well beyond my age. I couldn't keep the chickens together because the white one was 8 inches. Need to find a rooster that fits the space,. That got returned to the store I also added a bowl of fruits on the island. My coffee bar is on a counter to the right of this picture. My toaster is here as well. All my other cooking appliances are stocked in the pantry. I also liked the idea of changing the pendants to give the kitchen a better look. Will work on that one. Thank you so much for all the wonderful ideas and suggestions. You folks are the best! :) Will post an updated picture in the future once I have the kitchen ready

It's a major change. Something that has been so familiar is suddenly over. You will be replaced. It takes some adjustment. I have been looking forward to retirement and in some ways can hardly wait until I can retire, but, I was thinking just this past weekend that eventhough I hate the long commute to work and the traffic and hate having to get up at 4:00 AM to get ready for work, it still will be strange and I know I will have some pangs of loss. It's only natural to feel a little down when a big change takes place in our lives. We are creatures of habit and a new situation can be just a little bit frightening at first. By now you are probably feeling much better. By the way, I visited you daughter's web site. It is beautiful as she was beautiful and it is a lovely tribute to her. Judith

Thankyou so much for taking the time to visit Christin's website. I have been wanting to get in there and change pictures for two years now and just haven't had the time. We have so many of them that I think that she would like for people to see.
Also, thank you for the encouraging words about retirement. I was really starting to think that maybe I really don't want to retire and that I was doing it for others who want me to. Yes, you are right. It has been 3 whole days and I am already fogetting about the place. HA!
Didn't take long. I feel like a bird out of a cage. It really is kinda strange, though, to feel that I have an indefinite limit of time to do all of what I want to do. Being that I am accustomed to being off during the summer, I usually had a million things that I wanted to do in 10 weeks time, but now, I know I don't have to rush or start feeling panicky when August rolls around. WHEW !!
I hope that when you feel the time is right for you to retire, that you can enjoy it to the fullest and oh yes, how wonderful for you not to have to get up at 4:00 anymore. I don't think that I could do it, especially, all year long. I guess I have gotten pretty spoiled with my work being so close and having one stop light (just in the last couple of years) and being able to get up 15 minutes before I had to be there.
Hopefully, we can chat some more here.
