question about blacking out a bedroom

Hi all. Venturing back to these boards after seeing a lot of familiar names are still around.

I need to totally black out our master bedroom. There's only one window there, which is good. Right now there are wide blinds and then I hung an old drapery over the window with blackout drapes behind them (the kind with the magnetic strip) and then, because light still comes through the top, I had to add another layer of fabric up there. Well it looks ridiculous and it's time to replace things. I was thinking a duet blackout shade and new drapes but then I'll still have the issue of light coming out the top. Any one have any tips on that?

The best way I found to block out light is with room darkening cellular shades that are properly fitted. This will that care of 99 % of the light. Then panels along the sides for the light seeping thru and a top treatment. The below article covers this very topic.

How about a cornice board on top? That should keep the light out at the top.

Sorry Judithn! ;) Thanks everyone. I'm convinced and will keep the live edge and gain the additional counter space by not doing the indent. I will likely just have a small stool that will fit under the counter when not in use. Lucky gal, my cab maker has the slab already I think, but I will ask him to see if there is a natural intent, great idea.

I also like mixing and matching though I must confess my bedroom has matched furniture before I became more adventuresome with my decorating. I also try to mainly work within the same wood tone in mixing in my other rooms of my home, though I particularly like the inclusion of a painted piece or two in the mix. When you mention painting your existing set, you are still thinking in terms of the collection and not of creating a collected look. If you could post pictures of what you have now, I am sure you will get some excellent suggestions how you could tweak what you have now without starting all over. Even just the addition of one vintage piece could have a huge impact. Rooms like Allison's take a lot of vision and most likely evolved over many years of collecting. I also find her rooms inspirational.

Question about an offset window issue in bedroom.

I would keep it on the wall with the offset window and do a fake-out window treatment on the right to match one on the left over the real window. I can't find the pic I was looking for, but this will give you the idea...a drape covering the window with a tie back. Underneath, hang a sheer to obscure the fact that there's no window. To really help sell it, first hang a mirror with a white frame on the right side. This way, even though it has no light coming through, the mirror will reflect the light in the room and make it seem more like a window. It will also add a lot of fabric to the room, which is nice for a bedroom as fabric adds texture, warmth and sound deadening.

I love the blue and green you’re going with. Funky’s right with it being ” fresh and clean.” I know you don’t want to buy anything, but when you mentioned plates, I thought of fans. I suffered from migraines for twenty five years so I had to have a very dark bedroom. I learned that no matter what I did there was always a touch a light streaming in right in my face. I started wearing a sleep mask. Works like a dream and I can have beautiful windows without all the hassle.

terriks - thanks so much for posting the pictures. My window guy is coming tomorrow and now I have a much better idea of what to ask him

I wonder if it's weird to have a non-descript cornice behind the draperies? The cornice look itself isn't getting me all excited but I need the functionality of one.
