Most older homes were fortunate to have one bathroom, to be shared by the family. There was no opportunity to hog it for primping, and not always convenient and unoccupied for morning and nightly routines like toothbrushing, or freshening up with a face wash or shaving for the fellows, getting a drink of water or taking medicines. Having a sink in the master bedroom comes in very handy and it didn't offend sensibilities then like it would now, especially if put in a dressing area. Many hotels and motels will have one, if you notice, in the area where one stacks their luggage and hangs their clothing and this is in addition to a full bath with another sink. Having a sink in a bedroom would also be handy if caring for invalids for sponge bathing and other care. In fact, when we remodeled a small room to accommodate my elderly mother, having only one bath we also installed a sink. It came in very handy. As for the 'bedpan' most homes if needed used chamber pots, particulary those with old folks, outhouses or little children whom you would not want to have to navigate by themselves up or down a flight of stairs. Quite often what is in a chamberpot cannot be flushed down a sink and most women, particularly back then would probably not even consider using it for urine disposal. I knew a lot of elderly gals who would scrub their sinks out daily and bleach or use lysol on them. Many loos smelled of chemicals back then.

The potential field of buyers who want the space and upkeep of a house that large (and who can afford it) is relatively small. More plainly, You're looking to build a house that only a small percentage of buyers can afford to buy. Wanting a thing and being able to afford a thing aren't the same. Your pool of resale buyers will be small, so selling could take a long time, or you might be forced to take less than you want. - Yes, people will like the idea of a "master up and a master down": live-in space for mom, space for a live-in nanny or elder care-giver. Plenty of reasons people would like the space. But the real question is, Will your resale buyer be willing to pay what it will cost you to build it? Personally, I think you'll attract plenty of interest, but you may not attract the necessary dollars at resale to make this worthwhile. - How old are these small children? By the time you finish building this house, they'll probably be at least a year older -- how long will you want to have bedrooms close by? - I'm a highly practical person: you're talking about a short time when kids are small. To save money, could you sleep in a "non-master" upstairs for this short time, then move downstairs? - How "master" do you see your "masters"? That is, when you say "master bedroom", are you envisioning a slightly larger room with a modest walk-in closet and a private 3-piece bath ... or does "master" to you mean a spacious room with a seating area, a massive closet and a luxury bath? The question isn't just, "Should I have two masters?" It's, "Just how much will I put into a master?" Your own vision of "how much" can make a world of difference in this question. - Don't overbuild for your neighborhood. Remember that the biggest, most expensive house in the neighborhood is "drawn down" by the more modest houses that surround it. - Summary: Don't be caught up in just whether this is a desirable idea -- it is. Consider first and foremost whether it is an economically viable idea.

Thanks for posting your paint color. I love it and was wondering what it was. I'll keep in mind BM Quiet Moments for our own bedroom. In terms of how the unit looks it doesn't bother me at all. The ceiling is already odd in that style room and the unit is the same color as alot of your other items in the room so it all sort of goes together. Glad you got to use it for heat. They do a great job at that and a great job of cooling. I see so many of my neighbors on nextdoor complaining that this room in their house either doesn't get enough heat in the winter or doesn't get enough cooling in the summer. You will never have that problem with a ductless mini-split. The room will always be exactly what you want it to be with no fuss. You'll get spoiled by the comfort and look at the unit with fondness.
