ordering RTA cabinets. ? about cabinets between two walls.

I'm getting ready to order Conestoga cabinets and I'm so scared to place the order because several of the cabinets go between two walls (butler pantry for example). I'm afraid that I'll order them too wide (no matter how many times I measure) and they won't go in the space. Then I worry that if I get them with too much space on the sides, I won't know how to fill the gaps. I'm ordering for a whole house (new build) so I have 6 cabinets like this. Any advice? can they be trimmed a little if the walls aren't exactly straight? Are there acceptable ways to fill the gaps if I order them with a little room on the sides? For the full overlay, I guess I need to order them with extended stiles anyway so those wouldn't matter but what about the inset?

Definitely leave yourself some wiggle room. I don't know what Conestoga's specs are, but I can assume that cabinets may be off by 1/16 or so. Walls are also not always perfectly straight either. I think my cabinets were ordered about 1" shy of the actual measurement. Maybe a bit more, but we had brick which is not even and not perfectly straight, the wall without brick was not perfect either. I have a filler piece on each side of the sink and range. You could easily scribe a piece of filler wherever there was a gap along the wall.

I think you want to have a filler piece, perhaps 1" wide, and then order the cabinets about 3/4" too narrow for the space. Scribe the filler to the wall.

Update, I used online cabinets direct after a couple of months of talking to the owner Shane Doyle about my design and my concerns about ordering online. Everything went great! They did mess up on one cabinet, sent me wrong door style but once I sent them a picture they send me new doors right away. I would say to anyone ordering from them, be through with what you order and with checking your order once you receive it and follow their rules/directions on how to rectify any issue...if you do that then you are in good hands. The owner Shane was very fair and honest. The cabinets are beautiful and being installed now. Great quality and price! The shipping company will not deliver inside without charging you a ton so be prepared to either pay for inside delivery or move the cabinet boxes inside yourself.

We're in the middle of assembling a Scherr's kitchen now. We had planned on an IKEA/Scherr's combo for a long time, but in the end felt that our tiny kitchen would be best served by going the all-Scherr's route, so we could customize things as needed (and because the closest IKEA is almost 5 hours away). We ordered sample doors (unpainted and two wood types) and went back and forth with Leon, the owner, over the details. When we were finally ready to place an order in late October, the lead time was 10-12 weeks. However, there was a last minute cancellation/delay of an east coast Scherr's project due to Hurricane Sandy, so Leon pushed us up and we got our cabinets in 4 weeks. Cost for our 10x10ish kitchen was a couple thousand more than IKEA and a couple thousand less than a local cabinetmaker (also frameless cabs). As I said, we're still sorting through all of the boxes and assembling cabinets, but communication and customer service have been great so far.

We painted our new IKEA doors with BM Advance in Satin. Our lowers are yellow and for our uppers we used Marscapone, which I think is a nice creamy white. The doors we were painting were birch with a white-wash type of finish. We brought one of the doors to our local paint store and they recommended the BM Fresh Start Primer. (They did not recommend the Advance Primer. Since then, I've seen several reviews about how terrible that primer is.) We scuffed, primed, and did two coats of paint, sanding lightly between each coat. We brushed everything except the end cover panels. I rolled those. In retrospect, I wish we had done three coats and maybe even four on the cream uppers. The coverage with the lighter color doesn't seem as good. I think the two biggest downsides to BM Advance are the long dry time (16 hours between coats) and the long cure time. They say up to 30 days but ours was more like 60-90. The upside is that, once they cure, they are really durable. We're coming up on two years since we painted them and have not babied them. I've been known to take a scrubby sponge to them when removing difficult splatters and the finish is still fine. The other problem, which you may not have, was the learning curve. I'd never used self leveling paint before. It took me a while to stop poking at it and let the paint do its job. Also it is super drippy so three thinner coats would have been smarter.

I love my two tone. I like stained wood but didn't want to feel surrounded by brown. I like things a bit mismatchy and seemed like a good fit in my older home. I did the tall cabinets white like the uppers so that everything at eye-level is the same color. Especially because the tall cabinets are right at the entrance to my kitchen (seemed like it would feel too "in-your-face" to have the wood there). I prefer two tone kitchens with the tall cabinets matched to the uppers rather than lowers, but I don't think it's terrible to match the lowers. You can find pics of kitchens done either way. Agree to do a little contrast with the wood floor so it doesn't all blend with the lower cabinets. My kitchen floor was stained to match the rest of the house (IMO it's more red than I'd like, trying to tone it down with the rug), so I did lighter cabinets. I think it would be too much for the floor and cabinets to blend together.

You need to collaborate with your installer here. It won't do any good to order an extended stile if your installer is incapable of scribing that to the wall. Call up your installer and have them go over the plan and the measurements BEFORE you install. You can still fix the issues when everything is still on paper. Not so when it's sitting in your living room.

And be VERY VERY sure that you understand the nomenclature and the option codes that you are ordering. It can be easy to get it wrong and end up with entirely the wrong cabinet.

Not real knowledgeable in this area, but if your cabinets are frameless or full-overlay, do they need to have a spacer, or room to open without rubbing the wall?

All cabinets will need a bit of a filler or an extended stile against the wall(s)(3/4" minimum for an extended stile 1" for a filler, simply because it's difficult to cut a filler smaller). Walls are never straight. I usually use a standard 3" filler split in half if that works for the math. If it needs to be larger, then you'll need two fillers. The filler can have some scribe molding to hide the out of squareness of the wall, or, if you have a good installer that really knows what he's doing, he can scribe an extended stile. Sadly, there aren't that many "cabinet guys" out there that have the patience or skill to really do that well. You're in upper end territory with that choice. Both in cabinets and in installation labor.

I have frameless cabinets and made it easy on myself by leaving space for a 1/2" spacer on each end.
