Have you installed RTA cabinets?
Comments (9)We used Scherr's, too, and they were wonderful. We just gave them the dimensions of the cabs and the appliances that we chose and they designed the cabs with the proper spacing and all the stuff a good KD would do. The customization is the best - the wall oven cabinet was worth it alone. The instructions were terrific, customer service wonderful - I just can't recommend them enough. We got the mixed-hardwood boxes for our drawers. They are beautiful dovetailed boxes, and you only notice the crazy woods when the drawers are pulled out. It appeals to my reducing/recycling/reusing inclinations, and it is fun trying to figure out what kinds of wood they are. Several of the families that work there lost their homes during the flooding a couple of years ago that made national news. And it's great to support a "Made in the USA" product! Comments (18)Mrsshayne, the ones that I painted turned out okay. Durability seems fine -- no scratches or peeling and they wash up good. It is a little hard to gauge my painting skills with those grainy oak cabinets. I just washed everything with mineral spirits, primed with killz, and painted two coats of paint (minimal sanding). The problem with my current cabinets is not the paint job, it's that they are falling apart and are ugly and they leave a lot of wasted space in my small kitchen. I have more considerations that just my tight budget. We have to be mindful not to over-improve our home. Let me rephrase, we need to not over-improve more than we already have. Sophie, how much would a 100 yr old restored solid brick craftsman bungalow with 2500 sq. feet of living space, 2 baths, 5 bedrooms, a 1500 sq. foot unfinished basement, sitting on a double lot, two detached garages, original woodwork, exterior restored, and decent landscaping go for in your neighborhood? I would be hard pressed to get $125,000 for mine. Our house is by far the largest and most valuable in my neighborhood also. A 30k kitchen redo just does not make sense for us for many reasons. I live in a home that has 100 years of wear and tear in it, and it is part of the charm. Brush marks in paint on well-built, period-appropriate cabinets doesn't really bother me....See MoreRTA Cabinets: I am disappointed
Comments (48)I am with you RTA is an option. I have a older friend who is a cabinet maker, trained by his father, he makes incredible cabinets! They are amazing, but I can't afford them and would not ask him that big of favor. But, when they first came out with waterbased cabinet top coat, he used it on my parent's cabinets. UGH, it only lasted 2 years before we had to sand them and recoat. Fortunately he had used amazing materials and they are gorgeous still 25 years later. BUT my parents also chose slab doors (not at all popular back them, but high style now) and no stain, just beautiful wood. There is no joints to seperate and once we added the extra coats of top coat, they will outlast us all. The deal is that processes and products change, due to epa, supply, carb, health concerns, etc. I myself sanded and painted (slab) oak cabinet doors with oil based paint and got a mirror finish that probably out lasted the kitchen, but I doubt I could find that kind of paint now! I think it is a balance between the look you want and cost and durability and safety. I think I could take old lead oil paint, cover an expensive slab door and it would last forever, be dangerous to do and to have, and I would hate the look! I also hesitate to spend money on "forever" anything because I might just hate that look in 15 years and have spent so much I can't afford new. I look at it as buying a car, I want to get something nice, but reasonable, if I buy a luxury car, I won't be able to afford gas or even fix it, because I spent so much on it, so I ended walking as my luxury car sits in the driveway. It is not going to do me much good to spend so much on cabinets that I can't afford food. (No Ikea...everything I have bought from them broke long before it should and it too is made in China.) If I can't look into rta from China, then I must live with ugly, peeling painted cabinets with boxes that are made of particle board and fiber board (not even MDF). Why, yes, they were custom made in the USA, by local craftsman!...See MoreHow would you fix? RTA cabinet: Chestnut Pillow--Experiences
Comments (40)A long time ago, when I was young, we paid for furniture with a check (idiotic). The company closed its doors, but still had a phone number, with an answering machine. I made it a mission to get that money back. They never called, rarely did I get a person on the phone, and when I did, it was a young lady who whispered to me that they were behind on her paychecks, too. This was before Yelp, so what I did, was look up the names of the officers, and investigate to find out the names of the PEOPLE running the company. And then I called the district attorney to file a complaint. Now, it is no guarantee that the district attorney will actually do anything, however, my voicemails (and nowadays you have emails), were pointedly assuring them that their names were in the hands of the D.A., and I intended to pursue their criminal fraud to the furthest extent of the law. Lo and behold, I received a check in the mail that actually had sufficient funds to deposit it. As long as they still have a phone, and an email address you can still reach them. It's worth a try....See MoreRelated Professionals
