'Garden in my Wedding' pros and cons

I received the pattern over a week late. No fault of the seller, our distribution center in Savannah is having probs and is due to close soon. Our mail will go thru Jacksonville FL, Macon GA or somewhere in SC lol!!!

This pattern (1999) is replace by 'Flowers in my Wedding' for $32 + postage. I paid $20 for the garden and I am waiting for a $5 rebate. So for $15 total I was pleased.

There are nine pages of 1 and 2 sheets the consistency of phone book pages. These would have to be cut apart for PPing. The PPing looks simple enough, with only lines to follow (most are fairly straight lines). 8 different fabrics + the melon are suggested.

About 10 pages of instruction are included and with a quick perusal it looks detailed enough for an experienced beginner.

The applique is full size (I really get anonoyed when they say enlarge to ** size ) but only the pattern, no instruction on how to applique or the placement. OK with me as they did include a pic of the finished quilt to refer to.

On sale I think the pattern is cheaper than buying foundation paper and printing your own. All nine pages are exactly the same, but the pattern would be easy to copy on other foundations.

This pattern is a TON of work but I am excited to start looking for fabrics.

I drool over 'Bali Stars' but at this point in my life I can't see paying $50 + shipping for a pattern.

I think her patterns are expensive, but she is very talented (IMO0 lol!!!!!!

Rosa, I like Judy N's patterns, too, but haven't talked myself into paying the $$$ for one! LOL They probably don't give applique instructions because there are so many techniques for both hand and machine.

I would copy one of the 9 pages and keep it whole, just in case you're dying to make a second quilt! :)

Rosa, I think you landed a pretty good deal! Will this be an ongoing project or will you whip right through it? lol You and LindaOh will be the queens of this pattern. I'm so glad I have no desire to make one of these. Course, I didn't think I wanted to make a twister, either....sigh.

I garden in lower framed beds (10" deep), taller raised frame beds (20" deep), lagsana gardens framed in old concrete chunks and also frame free raised beds. I have lots of options, and find that there is a place for all. My annual vegetables go in the framed beds or at church in the unframed raised beds. The lower beds are best - they drain very well and seem to stay disease free. The taller beds hold more wet soils and were filled mostly with compost which both depletes quickly and can carry disease for long periods if disease gets into the soil (soil choice wasn't mine). The few issues with the frameless raised beds in our garden is that they get very weedy because matting weed grasses have taken over in walkways, and the walkways between beds are far too narrow for some people (we have a variety of people who garden with us). The framed beds are much easier to keep grass free and it's just easier for people to move about them we find. I love my concrete edged lasagna beds for perennial vegetables. The soil stays more moist in them yet drainage is excellent, I can keep layering inside the frames easily while building the beds and the beds "look" like something even when they are filled only with green manures or mulches. I can create any look I like with the chunks of free concrete and it always looks like rock in a few years and it always looks more planned. A nice idea if you have a front yard garden and want your vegetables looking more like ornamental gardens. I think everything has it's place, it is really what you prefer, what you can budget for.

I live where there is frost heave to worry about. After a lot of research and talking to a lot of people, we went with drystack. (2 1/2 feet high by 75 feet long.) We'd read and heard that mortar will eventually crack and look worse as the years go by. Drystack will shift somewhat, but should settle comfortably and be very solid if done properly. (solid base, drainage gravel, landscape fabric, slight batter into hillside, etc.) That's what we went with, with flat fieldstone. But I did meet some people who had used drylock cement at the backs of the stones, but left the fronts clear, so it looked drystack. A few of these people have not experienced any problems in many years, so it may be worth considering. Good drainage is key.

Sandy, regarding the holy&berries, its usually not only spraying, but a whole set of things in the city environment. Most plants which are not self pollinating, need pollinators. However, in the city environment bees often are exterminated as a pest if the swarm happens to land somewhere by chance, also people tend to destroy bee nests if they find them somewhere in their property, instead of calling a bee keeper so safely remove it. Also usually there are not that many bee keepers close to the city, so no honey bees in flying distance from the city. In the city bumble bees are important pollinator, but again, in the urban gardens they lack habitat and food to really thrive (especially since bumble bees rarely make nest in same location next year). Even those few flowering weeds that somehow manage to appear in the lawns, tend to be herbicided and weeded out fairly quickly. Lawns, paved gardens, flower-less ornamental plants, all of that make any sane bee (or any other nectar feeding insect) to fly the other direction. Nectar feeding insects need continuous supply of it from different plants for the variety of diet, so you have to have something different blooming at any day of the season to really feed them well. In bee opinion wild flower mix seeds for 2$ are way better choice than roses and other fancy, but low on nectar plants for 200$. Also, in some climates bumble-bees are even more important pollinator, because they fly in more cold and wet conditions than the regular honey bees (or any other pollinator, due to their fur). Hence if you have an orchard and very cold wet weather when your orchard is blooming, you rely solely on bumble bees to pollinate it. Bumble bees in their turn need fallen tree logs, meadows, turfs or even just clumps of dried grass to establish their hives, so heavy cultivation and even tidy rose gardens are not really good for them. Also, many birds and insects like to use second hand nests for themselves, for example bumble bees like to use old mouse nests for their nests, so if the mouse population is exterminated aggressively, that also influences the well being of the bumble bees. It is possible to provide special hives for bumble bees though, but again, not everyone likes a bumble bee hive in their garden.

Ha! We would be empty nesters but...we have had a few extras in the way of nieces and nephews and friends living with us due to transitions in their lives and now my son is back to town from school and looking for a job. In July we had a full house between semi-permanent guests and short term guests. I also cook meals that go out to my dad and sometimes others. When I watch the grandkids, I try to have dinner when the parents return so they don't have to cook. All this means I am generally cooking for 10--rarely just 2. If it is just the two of us, sometimes we just eat out :-))(date night!). I do use my wall oven the most but I am so glad to have the range oven and there are times that I almost could use another oven, more for a different temperature than capacity. On the other hand, I cooked for all these years with a 30 inch oven. The key for me to look effortless is having things made ahead. We have had "flying plates" dinners for 35, that consist of multiple mini courses that come out one after the other. Everything is premade on half sheets and the ovens got a workout for that. It seems like the family gatherings just get bigger- weddings and babies. Our extended family can be 30-40 and we have several parties a year for 60 or so. I also have had many wedding and baby showers, milestone birthdays and funeral dinners that range from 35-70 people. We also had rehearsal dinners but semi catered them. We didn't go with a warming drawer because the ovens go low enough to function that way and sometimes I use the rangetop. We had large disposable catering trays of pasta for a family dinner a few months ago and they kept warm on the simmer burners without scorching. I think one of the benefits of the warming drawer is that it keeps the humidity in the food so with the steam oven, you might not need it. If you haven't had convection, I think you will love it but it isn't for everything. I look at it as a tool and only use it when it will be a benefit to what I am cooking. I am still learning about it. I think your modes on the steam oven are different than on the regular oven. There is a slow roast vs a roast and convection roast. I would read the use and care manuals on all the appliances to better understand how they work. I don't agree with all of Wolf's recommendations for convection baking though. Convection is not the optimum thing for cakes or anything that needs to rise at least in the first part of the cooking cycle.

Donna that's what I plan to do, I bought kiddie art paper and it feel thinner than the pattern. It's only 3 different arcs.

Yep Sharon I'll whip right thu it lol!!!!! I think it will look great scrappy too with the melon the same fabric to tie it together. I don't think it will be difficult but it will be time consuming. I plan to hand applique 'cause my machine applique is the pits.

I also have the twister template from an older book. It's cute but I don't know what I would use it for lol!!!!

I got distracted by a Christmas tree that is made up of 8&1/2 scrappy blocks. The shape of the tree is 8&1/2 HST with a holly leaf appliqued on them. Really cute!!! I dug out all of my Christmas fabrics to see what I have.

Cute trees, Rosa. I like the idea of the holly leaf and also what looks like a stack of gift boxes for a tree. The only Christmas fabric I have fits in a shoe box so will need to get some this year. I've held off getting any for a few years because I had so much but, it's tiiiiiime!

I thought it was really cute too!!! Any 8&1/2 block would work. I think I'll make one for me and my daughter at the same time. I have some blue splarkly Christmas fabric that was a pain to sew with but it made really cute pinwheel snowflakes!!

The border is 132 (2&1/2 x 2&1/2) HST's, I think flying geese would look cute too, but more trouble for me anyway.

Sharon I thought about you when I saw the heart blocks!! I need red Christmas fabric, maybe Joann will have good sales.

The one I am making now is mostly blue, what color snowflakes would you make with red fabrics?? Silver or gold??

I posted a response and it doesn't show up!!! I am distracted by the Christmas tree quilt and the computer lol!!! I am not doing anything this week except write an article for the newspaper about the blood drive.

this week is all about QUILTING, ME ME ME ME lol

Mine was really slow coming too, I was beginning to think it might have been delivered to the wrong address!! We have about 3 different part time mail people, and even in our SMALL town I get other people's mail lol!!!

Please post what you think about the pattern and what color fabrics. I haven't decided yet, I would love a red!

I think that I will go with the brightest batiks that I can find with a white on white background. I have been looking at different bali pops.

Oh Jackie that sounds really pretty!!!! I am always drawn to white in quilts, I love the contrast it gives to most fabrics.

I like black too but I's so hard to work with.

This pattern looks like it will go fast if it is chain pieced. Now the applique is a different story lol!!!
