testing central AC system in winter ?

We are buying a house in Oregon that failed to close escrow last month. The day before closing the husband was informed that he was being laid off from his job, and they hadn't sold their previous house so they canceled buying this house.

We, the new buyers, just received today a copy of the inspection report done last month. We know the sellers have already replaced the siding in one area and we think they put in a new dishwasher. I'm going to ask what other repairs were made based on the old report.

We are going to have a HI done for ourselves this week. The old report said the inspector didn't check the central air conditioning because of the low temperature outside. Well, Tuesday's forecast is for 43 degrees F. So we probably can't turn down the thermostat low enough to force the AC to come on.

This is a 15 yr old, one owner house. It may not warm up enough here for a few months to turn the AC on. It hadn't even occurred to me that we might not be able to confirm that it's working, until we read the old inspection report.

So how do we determine if the AC is working properly? And if we can't confirm that now, how do we get a legal guarantee from the seller that it works?

Thanks.
