What finish are you looking for?

Here's our hardware. I don't know how you feel about cup pulls and round knobs, but these were purchased at Fred Meyer (Oregon and Washington...they're owned by Kroger)for $2 and $3 each. The cup pulls take two screws. As you can see, our drawers are flat-front, rather than traditional Shaker. Our old drawers were just like this (1930) and we wanted to stay with that style.
Home Depot also has some simpler pulls, too. I can't imagine not having hardware on the cabinets..they'd get gunky around the corners, I think.

RH's "Bistro" pull is similar but without the icebox screws.

Rejuv. has some similar--how about this one with only 2 screws?

I'm not much help ... I picked the Aubrey pull and then tried to find something similar with fewer holes, and never found anything I liked. I finally decided that the four holes wasn't a big issue. If I want to change hardware, at least the finish is painted ... I'll just fill and paint again. Stained, maybe not. But I don't think I'm likely to want to change the pulls, in any case.

jewel - 1, I guess I momentarily forgot myself. Of course, I should have stated the finish. I'd like brushed nickel or brushed chrome. Thanks for reminding me. Donnakay, your kitchen is beautiful. My previous home was built in the 30s and I know exactly why you wanted your drawers to be the same as the original kitchen. I think it was the only decision! I'm amazed you could find something so nice for so little money. I've tried HD and Lowe's, but they have nothing in stock...they are SO picked over. I even went to RH and they have just about nothing in stock that I would consider having. I was really surprised they had such a poor selection. Apparently their inventory person isn't doing a great job. Fori, I love the one you sent me, but they only have one small size available. I have 2 stacks of 30" drawers and I'm afraid that 3 inch pull would look lost on them. I don't know why more manufacturers don't make different sizes available. Segbrown, You might have just talked me into the Aubrey because I, too, have painted cabinets and if I were going to change the hardware it would probably be so far down the road I'd want to paint them a different color. I checked out your kitchen and I LOVE it. Would you mind sharing what sizes you bought for your different sized drawers? What about the cabinets and the pantry. I have to buy for all those pieces myself and I don't know whether to buy 4, 6 or 8 inch lengths. Any help you could give would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have the Aubrey pulls on my (stained) cabinets. I used 4-inch pulls on the doors and 6-inch pulls on all the drawers. All in brushed nickel. Most of my drawers are 18 inches but I have one bank that is 30 inches and I think the 6-inch pulls work on both narrower and wider drawers.

I never even considered the number of holes (now I'm going to start worrying!!). But they are really nice pieces of hardware. Heavy, substantial. They feel good in my hand. I did use some kind of discount code (that I think someone posted on GW) which saved 20 or 25 percent. That helped because they were a bit more expensive than I was originally planning for.

Thanks. We're really enjoying our kitchen. After I posted last night I thought about my rationale for using the two sizes of pulls. First, I went with all pulls both because I find them easier to use than knobs and because I like the consistency of the look. But I wanted the doors and drawers to be slightly different.

Here's a shot that shows the 6-inch pulls on the 30-inch drawers.

On the go without side of the question, you could always get pressure latches. :)

Just do the screws!

They're classic. You like 'em. What else do you need? =)

If you do ever have to replace them, it shouldn't be THAT hard to find handles with a base fat enough to cover the holes.

Thanks storklady ... I was out of town today, I'll measure for you tomorrow. We went pretty big, mostly 6 and 8 in., I think.

Okay, here we go: most of the handles are 6 in. The 8 in. handles (and cup pulls) went on the 24- and 30-in. drawers. Most of the other drawers were 15 in. or so. On the 30-in. drawers, we put two 6-in. cup pulls.

On the island we also put 6-in. handles on the top of the doors horizontally. On the ca binet doors we mostly put 6-in. handles on vertically, but on the shorter doors, we used 4-in. handles.

Mainly we eyeballed it.

Lee Valley has pulls very, very similar to the Aubrey and at about half the price of RH. Only a couple of sizes though.

Gotta say, though, that I would avoid hdwe w/ exposed screws because of the gunk factor & being much harder to clean. I'm a slob so YMMV.

Also, I like the idea of a pull being held by a through-bolt vs screws so no worry about the screw holes getting stripped out over time.

Gunk factor hasn't been an issue with us, but we were concerned about the screws, which is why we searched (in vain) for something else.

My KD did have one client who had trouble with similar handles, but they fixed it with different screws. We discussed using loctite or similar to secure the screws, or even buying longer ones at the hardware store, but I can't remember if we modified anything or not. So far everything is fine. I try not to "manhandle" the handles, though.

I'm sure you can replace the screws with ones that go through at some later point should you have troubles. It would probably only be a few (liquor cabinet) that get enough wear.

Great thread storklady -- please post photos when you get your pulls! These photos are all so helpful. We are doing cherry shaker style and I (think) I'm doing all pulls on drawers and doors, the Bistro from RH which is similar to the Aubry, but there seems to be a left and right side to the Bistro.

Segbrown, your kitchen is to die for. Seriously, it's beautiful. I love your home. It reminds me very much of the one I left behind when I moved to TX. *sniff. sniff.* I LOVE your mix of hardware. It just look smashing. I didn't mix it up as well as you did because I only have a 10 x 10 kitchen in this house and I there isn't much to work with. ha. Unfortuantely, I didn't see your response before I ordered pulls last night from RH. I chickened out over the Aubrey due to the screws. I know. I know. I shouldn't have, but I can't stand the thought of 4 holes. It just seems excessive to me. Really...nothing compared to the Aubrey line, but I ordered Ephram because it's just simple and I think nobody will really notice them as they won't stand out. I'm sure it will be fine when all is said and done. I think I messed up because I didn't order any 6" pulls. I ordered 8" pulls for all the drawers because I didn't know what else to do. I have a 15" trash pull out and a 15" drawer above it. I have four 18" drawers, one 24" drawer and six 30" drawers. I'm wondering if I should get 6" pulls for the trash and drawer above it and maybe for the 18" drawers too. What do you all think? Would the 8" look to over-sized? I ordered the matching knobs for my 3 glass upper cabinets (I didn't want a lot of uppers in this small space so that's all I have)and the cabinets that are hinged. I don't even have an island to buy hardware for. ha. Lastly, I ordered the 12" ephram pulls for the pantry doors. I wasn't sure what to do about the pantry. Please give me your suggestions. Just because I ordered the hardware doesn't mean I can't re-order or change it up some. I'm not stuck with it.

Ci Lantro, the pulls you shared are beautiful too. I'd return the RH pulls in a heartbeat, but like you said...they just don't have any sizes to choose from. I can't tell you how I've searched online to no avail for graduated sizes of pulls. Maybe we should go into the business because there is so little out there!

fori...you made me LOL about the overused liquor cabinet. I think you are on to something there....ha. I love your sense of humour.

I will post photos as soon as all is finished. It's about 80% now. Fair warning though....my kitchen is not the typical kitchen shown on this forum. I didn't have resale in mind when I put it together. It's colorful and happy and god knows....this house really needed a huge dose of both. It was a spec house built in 1981 and EVERYTHING was still orginal...all builder's grade...not one color was in the house but beige or brown. It was tired and dirty and worn out. The house lacks any architectural interest too...so....there was nothing to do but go with it and make it as happy as I could with color so you wouldn't notice the bones aren't very good. I would venture to guess most folks on this forum won't like it much. ha.

I would order almost everything in 2 sizes, frankly. I have to eyeball things first, so that's what I do. Then return what doesn't work.

I can't wait to see your kitchen ... I love color, plus that's always how I've dealt with lack of arch. interest, too. Since we got to add our own bones this time, we did go more neutral, for a change.

segbrown, thanks for posting your photos! Your kitchen drawers are the look that I think I want to aim for in my kitchen. What cabinet line did you go with?

Segbrown, I will add to the order and go from there. Thanks for your advice. I think the hardware has been the most difficult choice of all. Your choice of bones is perfect in my opinion. My former home was a 1930s raised Acadian cottage in the NOLA area. That architectural style and era is my favorite. It always has been...even as a child. It truly was my dream home. I lived in NOLA my entire life until 14 months ago. Moving at mid-life to such a "foreign" place has really been an experience and difficult at times, but it has been a happy change. Dealing with the house...which is the complete antithesis of what I was used to and what my preference always has been...was a real stretch. I "fought" any good postiive or good feelings about the house for a few months and then decided to just do what I could and embrace it for what it is....and I'm really liking the end result. It will be fun for me to post it in the near future.

I have the Ephram pulls and you will LOVE them. My kitchen's been done for 6 months and I still say "I'm so glad I got you" to the pulls a couple of times a day, lol. They just feel so GOOD!

I actually went with pulls on everything. I thought I'd do knobs on the uppers, but the pulls looked better in my case. You really have to hold them up to the finished cabs and see how they look in your kitchen.

I did 4" on everything but did 6" on the pantry doors and the 36" cabs below the cooktop. I did 4" on the trash pullout and the drawer above it, because there are 4" pulls on the drawers next to them on both sides and that run is really visible from the family room.(I wanted 6"...but it didn't look right). It really boils down to what looks best for the big picture. If it's not too late, I'd order a 4" and 6" to try as well. (But I think your 8" will work for what you need.) Also, for some reason (can't remember exactly) I liked the Aubrey knobs better than the Ephram knobs, so maybe get one in each size of those to try, too. They look good with the Ephram pulls.

It's a pain to have to return all the stuff you don't need, but it's so helpful to try the actual hardware with your cabinets. Hopefully, you have an RH nearby for easy returns?? Good luck!

This is probably too late, but might help someone else in the future. My RH also doesn't stock many pulls (they didn't have even ONE 4" ephram in ORB for a sample pull!). If you go into the store and order from there (assuming they don't have the pulls and knobs you want), you don't have to pay shipping, and they will ship to your house. You can return any unused/unwanted items to the store (they told me the return policy was 90 days, but not to worry if it was longer than that). I ordered one sample (that's when they told me to come back into the store to make the full order with free shipping) and then my full order with this way - it's easy.

I also ordered many duplicates in 4" and 6" because I was undecided. I didn't order any 8" though - I hope I didn't mess up there.

Last thing - search the internet for discounts. I was able to save 10% on my order in the store with a code from retailmenot, but I think it expired 4/5/10. Every little bit helps!

Pudgybaby....I sure wish I'd known I could order from the store and not pay shipping. They did not tell me that. I went there to buy the hardware and honestly...they were out of every size in every style....but anything oil rubbed bronze. I was shocked because they have such huge displays of so many varieties and the cupboards were bare. I was really disappointed but the sales clerk said nothing about ordering through the store. That stinks. I paid $33 for shipping if I remember correctly. I'll order from the store with the 2nd order. I did look for discount codes but couldn't find anything. Thanks for everything...eveyone. I have Shaker style cabinets in my kitchen. I used what used to be called "staple" pulls in a brushed chrome finish. I wanted something very plain and didn't want a period looking pull. I also wanted a type of pull that I could hook with a pinky if my hands were full or covered with food or oil. The staple fit the bill on all accounts. I've been very pleased with the look and functionality, plus they're a standard size (making them easy to change if I were ever inclined), and they're just about the least expensive cabinet hardware you can buy.
