My parent's garage had two people doors to it. One on the back, next to the vehicle door, and one that opened up to the front porch very close to the front door. My mother didn't want it to be the same as the front door, but she didn't want to have this pretty front door and your average white door in the same "shot". And the white doors really seem to pop out with her brick. So, she made them the same finish, but the front door has glass details and the garage door doesn't. The other garage door is just white and matches the vehicle garage door. Unfortunately, I went through all my photos and looks like I don't have any that show the front and garage doors at the same time or really even after the brick was done. I would remove the shutters. (And you can’t add ones to the big window as they will not fit properly). Your storm is black, so paint the front door black. Would probably go with the color of the corner brick on the vertical siding and all the house trim, as well. The white is just too bright.

Because the brick around the door is sheltered by the overhang you could probably paint it without having to worry about damaging its ability to breathe. However, there is an alternative way to change the color of brick and mortar. I've been fascinated by DYEBRICK since I first discovered the company. Why not just paint that upper white part the same blue as the door? That will provide same or similar visual effect as your original door. Keep it simple. If you put a header on it, its going to clutter it up and draw attention to it and make the space look more awkward, not less.... besides being a total stylistic mismatch to the house and the door. I dont know if Id put anything in there at all - just blue to make it all look like a single, unified space. If you are replacing the sconce, get one thats simple, discrete, and doesnt draw attention to itself The door itself (is all the style statement you need to make. Its a simple, boxy brick house with a stylish blue door. Thats all you need - boom, done. Sometimes less is more.
