Such pretty fabrics and wallpapers! I would keep the white rod but push the rod in a bit so the first little finial is at the edge of the valance. I'd spread the gathering out so it's evenly gathered across.

If it were me, I wouldn't put the border around the ceiling. I'd put it around the room at chair rail height. I think the green plaid looks so pretty with the green in the comforter.

You could also paint the wall below the wallpaper border a pink or green.

Why don't you use the wide border as a chair rail effect around the room instead, and paint the lower wall in the green, the upper wall in a soft rose or pink?

As for the valances and rod, I would prefer to see the finials come just past the outside of the trim. I think the rods are too long right now.

The fullness of the valances is fine, tho. Standard fullness is about 2.5 times the width of the window, so those don't appear to be too full at all, but are certainly pretty.

OK, so I'll put the brackets on the wall right at the edge of the trim so just the finials stick out (and the valance barely covers the trim). I'll put it just high enough to cover the attached valance on the shade.

But that still leaves the problem of the wallpaper (if I use it). We really don't want to repaint right now, even if I could convince DH to move the furniture so I could paint the lower half of the room and use the border as a chair rail, there is so much furniture and it's so tall you really wouldn't see much. So only place I can really use it is at ceiling. Should I use the smaller border (pink and ivory, a little green, just no purple), or none at all?

(I've moved 1 nightstand to over by the door, on the other side of the bed she has a tall dresser in the corner by the window, so there is *a lot* of tall furniture!)

These are on her bedspread - I love the lily of the valley on the sheer fabric, no shams but maybe I could use the rose-patterned fabric (and even the roses and ribbons from the crib-sized dust ruffle?) to make throw pillows? We need to soften the headboard.

First, I would abandon the skimpy rods. They look lost compared to the massive (but lovely!0 furniture. Either you need something more substantial, perhaps a wider wood rod/larger finials and hang the valances with rings, or use the regular rods that don't show at all and return back to the window. Hang them as high as you can to balance the tall furniture. I assume you are staining the window trim darker, or painting it? If not, I would be sure the window treatments cover the lighter wood - again, it feels lost with the furniture.

I would not use the border at the top of the wall, again because of all the tall pieces. I would instead use it as a border around the edge of the ceiling, and then create a center border to act almost as a small medallion or tray, from which a ceiling fixture would hang.

Using the other material from the crib pieces to make pillows (even just the front of the pillows- you can always use a solid pink or green on the back) would help soften the headboard a bit.

Les - the window trim is stained the same color as the rest of the house. I thought it would be better to be consistent with the trim and not try to match the furniture in each room. I thought the light colored rods would blend in with the Navajo White walls, but at least they have big finials. I'm not heartbroken to take them back, though, since I thought it looked a little strange not to have the valance return back to the wall. Unfortunately, I can't cover the vertical trim or the stools completely without making full-length drapes that will end up behind the mirrored drop-center vanity. Since the baseboard, the closet doors (bifold), the room door and the trim around the doors is all the honey color, it wouldn't help much IMO to hide the window trim with drapes.

Now, what do you mean to use the border around the edge of the ceiling? Apply it to the ceiling where it meets the walls, instead of the walls where they meet the ceiling? She does have a white "lacy" looking ceiling fan we could put a medallion under - blends in with the white ceiling, but latticework on housing and ruffled glass shades just give some texture. We didn't want to have heavy-looking dark fixture up there.

Another thing we were thinking to soften the look was to take the fabric that matches the valances (don't remember how much I bought - but I have a partial bolt, not just the crib sheet), and make a "canopy" that would hang from a hook or knob centered over the headboard and then swag down (I'd just cut a length to some width that would hang over the knob and then swag it like a scarf valance, nothing lined or mitred since I can't sew)?

DD (5.5 yrs old) calls this her "princess bedroom".

That is lovely furniture. Very pretty carvings. I still think you should put the border around the middle of the room. It's substantial in its own right so you don't have to paint another color above or below. I think with the furniture so large and tall that anything up high will make you want to kreen your neck up to look.

I think doing a canopy swag would be a good idea if you have the room. It looks like you've got alot crammed in there!! :-) Do you need the tall wardrobe for storage? It seems like the room would be a little more spacious feeling if the night stands flanked the bed and then you had the vanity as a focal point.

Another thought is how large is the bedroom closet? My son's room is not small, but with a bunk bed, large window and a built in cabinet he didn't have much wall room, so I put his dresser inside his closet. Would the wardrobe fit in there? Just an idea.

The wardrobe is 67" long x 21" deep x 77" high so it would barely fit in the closet if we took the wire shelf/rod down. We'd have to take DD's toy bins out too and put them somewhere, build the wardrobe (10 easy pieces) in the closet. I don't think DH would go for it, and wouldn't it look strange to open bifold doors to find a 3-door wardrobe (come to think of it, I'm not sure you could open the 2 doors on the ends if the wardrobe were in the closet)? I don't have another room I could move the wardrobe to.

I am going to get rid of the tall dresser (not part of the set) and move the 2nd nightstand to that side of the bed once DD is old enough I can trust her not to lose the keys to the wardrobe/vanity. Right now I store her better clothes (and my greatgrandma's wedding dress) on the left side, DD's sheets and some spare blankets on the right side, I don't remember what's in the vanity. The doors swing open if they're not locked, and the vanity doesn't have knobs on the doors, so you have to use the keys.

Help please - let's wait to discuss the furniture placement and use of wallpaper border, can I get more opinions on these rods vs "standard" (hidden) rods that return to the wall? Or look for something darker (darn, I returned some dark bronze A&C looking ones last year b/c I was thinking of them for my LR and only found 2, needed another long one)?

I know the furniture is dark and heavy but I am trying to keep the room feminine, not too babyish for my 5yo, but something she can keep for another 7-8 yrs until she decides to go Goth (in which case we'll keep the furniture, but she'll want black paint and curtains LOL)!

They tend to blend into the wall color, so while they don't bother me, they don't really do anything for me either.

You seem to like the traditional hidden valance rod, so you can't go wrong with one of those, so I'd replace the white rods with the hidden ones. It will look nice either way in my opinion.

Thanks - I just want to return the rods to Target, use the ones I already had if that's what the consensus was. I *do* like the way the traditional valance rods return to the wall - looks more finished to me. These pics were taken with me standing on a chair and holding them, I haven't put anything up yet.

Now, I can turn my attention (easily distracted LOL so have to address one thing at a time) to the wallpaper issue - I don't think much would show if I did chair rail height, even if/when we get rid of the dresser, b/c the wardrobe, vanity mirror, and headboard are so high/wide. Not to mention the windows, door, and wide closet opening. Soooo, options are

1) at top of wall near ceiling (though this room is the one room in the house that has decent cutting in so don't need to cover sloppy paint job)

2) on the ceiling near the wall like lesmis suggested? Intriguing, I'd like to see pics

3) Don't use it at all, 3 out of the 4 walls have things going on (windows, wardrobe, closet), just hang a picture over the headboard or do a swagged scarf as a sort of canopy?

FWIW, DS has a sports border he wants to use at top of wall in his room (a little sloppy paint, though not bad, I could always do chair rail in his room and paint darker blue on bottom, leave light blue/gray on top?), I have a fish border that *has* to go in the bathroom b/c it's a dark blue paint slopped on the ceiling (so I have to overlap the border onto the ceiling a little, don't want to try to cover the dark blue with white just at the edges - I have the feeling I'll make it worse), *and* (dare I admit I'm border-happy?) I've got a sculptured border I want to use in the MBR and bath (if I can find 1 more roll, might have to do something chair rail in master suite so I have enough to cover). Is there any decorating "rule" that says they have to be placed the same way in each room? If I want to/have to go chair rail (not sure how that would work with laser-cut bottom edge) in master, should I do DD's room the same just so I don't have 1 oddball room?
