Looking for an interesting color: kinda pink, kinda gray?

We have a teeny tiny powder room off the kitchen. No window. It has a white toilet, a white pedestal sink, and nickel fixtures. The flooring is slate, gray w/ some plummy and mauvey tones. When I say tiny -- okay, I have seen people here talk about tiny bathrooms and they're 5' x 8' or something -- mine is about 3' x 5'.

Once upon a time, the walls were BM Piano Concerto, which was very pretty. Then I got the urge to do the "dramatic color in the powder room" thing, so I painted it Frozen In Time. Okay, I'm over that. It is just too dark.

So... I have in my head a sort of grayish, "smoky" pink color... does one exist? I have pulled from the BM deck these colors: Wisp of Mauve, Soft Sand, Wheatberry. More browny pink than gray pink but maybe that's what I'm looking for?

Also from the Color Stories deck, I think Pinky Swear and Knitting Basket are interesting. Knitting Basket looks sort of like a gray with a bit of lavender thrown in. I'm having a bit of a hard time discerning colors because it's almost dark out right now -- we're having quite a storm. But the bathroom is dark so I suppose these are good conditions for the circumstances.

Actually, the more I look -- I think Knitting Basket is probably too murky.

Other suggestions?

I'll try to take a pic showing the floor, since that's the one "colorful" aspect of the room that I need to consider.

Oh, and the kitchen adjacent to the powder room is painted River Gorge Gray.

There was always a way to rebel when one was at that age. I think though, that it's getting harder when there's so much more "anything goes" these days. It seems every time the rebels go to extremes, the extremes become more mainstream or at least familiar enough to no longer be shocking. Back when I was growing up, a rebel only needed to grow his hair long...the longer, the more rebellious. I recall what a todo was created when the "mop head" Beatles first came on the scene. I mean their hair was actually quite short and they wore suits and ties for goodness sake! I'm not sure what kids will do next to rebel...I mean tats are common, pants can't go any lower...they even make suspenders to keep the pants from falling completely down, skirts and shorts have already been shorter than short, make-up has already gone totally goth with black eyes and lips, hair has already been every color of the rainbow and gelled to the sky, earlobes have been stretched, tongues have been split, genitalia have been pierced and ringed. I honestly don't know what's next. I remember back in the hippy days, my FIL, a prof, who was very matter of fact with his students, would comment on their long hair and baggy bell bottoms and say, "You know, if you want to get attention, you don't have to go through all that effort....you could just walk around with your fly open." (Please don't misinterpret...I'm not suggesting all tats are a statement of rebellion.)

My one comment is that even if you decide not to take it, wouldn't it be better to have it fixed anyway? You know what's gonna happen! That said, I too think "Culver" has chosen you. It's kind of wooded in your area isn't it? Remember the late Larry "Bud" Melmin of the David Letterman Show? His name was Calvert DeForest.... Culvert DeForest... is that a little spooky?????? More than a coincidence perhaps??? My sister had a cat come to her house and chose her. She made the poor thing weather a terrible winter before finally giving in to her the next summer. My cousin did the same thing. They were chosen. And it's an honor. Think of it this way: This way if you're feeling "gray" it could be a good thing! Better than feeling 'blue"! One thing, these don't sound like feral cats, especially with "Culvert" came up to you like s/he did. (BTW, the translation there was what's for dinner mom???) I'm sure they'll adjust to indoor life just fine. And I'm sure they'll like the furnace at this time of year. You might start with him/her in the basement if you have one. But I don't think you'll need to. I have some pet food coupons I could mail you! :D

springville - beautiful job on the porch floor! I saw the garage picture too - very nice - and I'd love to see pics of the driveway and walkways. as rucnmom says, the stairs can be removed. We had a big concrete slab and steps that I was always kind of intimidated by -- thought it would be so hard to get rid of. We originally hid with a deck, then when we did an addition off the back I was afraid it would be an issue, but the builders said no worries. It was gone in a matter of minutes, although they used a pretty huge machine because they were also digging the basement for the addition, but a Bobcat could have done it, too. You have extra considerations for removal, since you have a porch; and you'd have to count on your lawn being chewed up a bit. I'm just mentioning this because the cosmetic updates listed above are great, but I'd keep an eye on the condition of the steps and be prepared in case you have to do a replacement down the road if the steps continue to crack and chip away.

I had an epiphany this morning. I was trying to put some things together that just didn't quite jibe. I remembered my old lesson from my pepto-bismol bedroom walls fiasco--if something in a room is bugging you, the way to make it go away is to pair it with things ALMOST like it that don't bug you, rather than try to contrast it or draw the eye away from it. Make it blend in. And truth be told, I really didn't want to fuss with painting all those doors--closet and otherwise, window trim, etc., even if it would look good. And my dad probably wouldn't like it. And I wasn't planning on hiding those beach watercolors away forever in that bedroom, I had toyed with putting them in the dining room anyway, to give that closed-in room the feeling of having a view . . . and the stuff on the dining room walls was rustic and woodsy, not ideal for what I envisioned for that room either, with formal furniture. The art on the walls in there was just being OK place holders for now, so totally chage-able. Switching out the art in the dining room and bedroom went with a direction for the bedroom that I had been toying with anyway--rustic northwoods cabin instead of light and beach-ey. AND, I have been wanting to find a way to use this color palette in a room in my house, and this may be the perfect opportunity. I'm already halfway there with the orange-y wood and the carpet . . . So I'm going to see if I can do some major re-arranging of art and furniture that is already in the house, I have some ideas of some wood pieces I can use in the room. The painted dresser and nightstand can go in the pink and blue girly guest bedroom with the white walls. I really feel excited about the possibilities, like "a plan has come together." I'll keep y'all posted, it may take me a few weekends to get it all done. This weekend I'll be happy if I can just make some headway on getting a wall paint color chosen. I'm thinking to go dark raspberry or grey-blue for the walls, like a darker shade of the carpet or even swing it a little grey violet if I can. There's just nasty plywood under the carpet, this is late 80's house.

I think the color you are looking for is what my grandmother used to call "ashes of roses," a grayed pink.

When I googled "ashes of roses" I found the page below, which, if you scroll down a bit, has lots of swatches from various paint companies of the sort of pink you are looking for.

I am thinking a very light Gray on the walls and maybe some pink towels or other pink accessories.

teacats, some of your other colors were too purple for me -- I'm trying to move away from the lavender/lilac arena -- but Grege Ave may be getting closer.

I just stumbled upon Rose Dust and Meadow Pink, which I had marked for some reason (sometimes I mark colors on the deck because I see them somewhere and like them a lot). I think this is the neighborhood I want to be in...

Ashes of roses :) that phrase stuck in my brain since I first read it in Thornbirds when I was a teenager. It was color of Meggie's dress.

You might try something in Farrow & Ball. For a powder room, the paint might be more affordable.

My grandmother called that color "old rose." They hadn't turned to ashes yet. :)

Imo, though, I'm not really seeing that color with the floor tile. The tile seems to have a lot of orange in it. Perhaps a grayed salmon or rust color would work well?

bird, the pic is a little deceiving because of the flash, but yes, there are rusty tones as well as pink/mauve and lavender. I'm just determined to have a pinkish bathroom, though a more salmon/peach color would work too. Among the many colors I've pulled from my BM deck are Outer Banks and Cinnamon n Spice, which are more in the salmon direction.

Then, by all means, go with pink if you think it will work! I'm in a real "girly" phase right now, and into anything pink, although pink won't go in my house. :( I am SO into pink and white/cream cottage dining rooms right now. LOL

the problem with some tan pinks (which rose dust and meadow pink seem to be) is they have that bandaid color look in certain rooms... they can lose their 'prettiness'...

if i wanted a pink with the floor, i would get sample cards of perhaps mulberry wine, magic potion, rose silk, paleberry, sandblast, and possibly proposal (very light) and start there and see what i thought... tweak, and then get some samples... the beauty of your windowless powder room is it won't be affected by time of day sun!!

We are going on vacation soon so this project is being shelved for a bit, but I did ask my painter to let me know if he's available for a rainy-day job sometime this summer, so I'll have to pick a color before too long! Fortunately, when we get home my daughter starts camp so I'll have more time to devote to a couple of home projects...

After reading the discussion about pink and gray with the baby's bedroom (sorry, can't remember who posted it) -- a color combination I have always loved but haven't been able to use anywhere -- I'm leaning heavily toward painting the walls a straightforward gray and using pink (not baby pink, but a mauvey pink, if that makes sense) towels and well, whatever other accessories I can place in that tiny room.

Still haven't heard from my painter, so this may not happen til fall, and I'll probably change my mind a few more times til then...
