Do you have any thoughts on selecting a binding color?

I'm curious, especially about picking a binding for a scrap quilt since that's what I'm doing. Do you put a lot of thought into it?

I usually either use one of the fabrics in the quilt, or often, I choose a plaid or striped material, trying to choose one that comes close to some of the colors in the quilt. I really like the look of a binding made of plaid (such as homespun), it makes a nice binding. I have made bindings the same color as the borders so that it blends in and also a different color - it depends on the quilt. I have seen scrappy quilts with scrappy borders and they look great. I make mine pretty minimal in size anyway, I always use 2 1/2 inch strips that are then double-folded.

On a scrappy? Absolutely not. LOL. That's the joy of a scrappy. I just finished binding off a broken dish scrappy and I grabbed the navy blue binding I'd made for a blue/yellow quilt and glad I did it. I find the scrappies look better to my eye with dark or vivid binding. It neatens up the look and defines the borders to the eye.

I only have various seedlings which I have collected from other people's gardens although Mr.Campanula drove 70 miles (laughable distance to Americans but we practically pack a suitcase here) to buy me a pure, clear yellow single (should get some interesting seedlings now). I have never heard of plants such as Crimson Ruffles - we rarely get named plants over here apart from the 'Lady' series - although we can buy various breeder selections such as 'Ashwood' or Harvington Hybrids or Bradfield Stars - from the particular nursery which grows each strain. They tend to be Oriental hellebores, Hellebore X Hybridus. Many nurseries and seed catalogues will sell seed selections too, including Mrs Betty Ranicar....but seed is always a bit of a gamble. I am personally loving the delicately nodding H.thibetanus and the smaller deep red flowers of H.atrorubens but have failed to hang on to H.lividus. The Christmas rose, H.niger is a bit dodgy too, although I do mean to try H.nigercors - it has taken me a while to come round to green flowers but having finally achieved a smidgeon of taste and sophistication (ahem)........

I bought this one several years ago at a consignment shop. I hated the finish on the frame, but knew I could fix that problem easily. Here it is Before. It was done in a weird Shabby Chic attempt with blue in the crevices, but the carved wood frame was a nice one: Like you, I had to first figure out what would compliment the picture and work in the room . . . although complimenting the picture should always come first. I thought that an Old World look would work best with this classic print. I painted the outside 3 borders a deep rich brown. This is just acrylic craft paint, BTW. I then used a Raw Umber wash over the outer two, allowing it to stay in the crevices of the second border's carvings. I knew that I wanted the inner frame edge to be gold, so I painted that and then used gold Run-N-Buff on the border next to it. This was a good segue to the gold inner border, IMO. I can't find the rest of my pics that I took as I painted and then antiqued the frame, but here's one of the last steps in my process. After this, I just antiqued the gold inner border with a brown antiquing wash and it was done. The bottom line is that you can use the small bottles of acrylic craft paint, glaze and antiquing medium to easily get what you want on pretty much any ratty or wrong colored frame. I had enough art already on our walls but, with our high ceilings, I wanted to hang something over the doors in our family room. I found the plates after that to hang on either side of it. They're not that orange IRL, but more of a soft amber color. The camera's flash bounces through the glass, off the cream wall behind them and always makes them look like that in pics! Lynn

Marsha Marsha Marsha, Why are you doing this to me lol!!!! I have never had a binding seam land on the corner and never thought about it. And you know that NOW every binding I sew on this is going to happen!! I always measure the quilt and the binding so I do have enough binding, and I make sure it is about 6-8 inches longer. I guess I do sometimes audition the fabric for the binding, but I usually use the same fabric that is in the quilt. I like a thin binding that blends in, but on a baby or youth quilt I like bolder bindings. I have no idea why lol!!!! My problem with bindings is I really have to struggle to get the end to look nice and not lumpy! I enjoy the handwork but I always dread getting to the end! Rosa

you have a nice color cabs, i would try to match them as best i could color and species wise. look into the laminates, they really hold up well with dogs. we had a 50b dog and have a cat and we have no scratches. i am pretty sure we used "quick step". we have had no problems at all with it. is your foyer right next to kitchen? if not i don't think it would be a big problem to go with laminated floor. they look very close to real and from a distance i don't think people will notice, except us TKO GWers!! :) i think your kitchen/dining layout is perfect for it.

For Scrappy quilts, use up the pieces for the binding. If you can't bring yourself to do that, pick one of the fabrics in the quilt and go with that.

I never match my binding to my border fabric. I always go for matching the binding to the pieced top and have a contrasting border to frame the quilt in between the two. Sometimes I do an inner and outer border. A scrappy binding would look great.

I cheat. One of my patients has been quilting for close to 80 years and her eye for design is impecable. I bring her my top and she gives me her opinion on borders and bindings.

She's always right and she gets to be involved in quilting even though her sewing days are behind her.

Cheating sounds like the idea for me, Diane. There's the man at Hobby Lobby that I'm in love with. He's the custom frame guy and this year I just walked in and said "what do you recommend?" His eye is unerring. His sister quilts. I swear, if I get too neurotic and over thinking, I'll just pick out my top three and take it by and ask him.

I over think it too. Usually I pick something dark or try to get a color from the quilt. However, my hubby has a good eye for color and I usually ask him.

My hubby has a wonderful eye for the final border on the quilts. I usually match my binding to the last border, unless the border is a print. Then I pick a solid from the print.
