Who nuked our skeeters?

Here in NW Oklahoma, we've transitioned from "June bug" season to mosquito season.

I swear, our mosquitoes this year are ENORMOUS!

They look like something out of a bad B movie...(Bloodsuckers from the Swamp...rated PG, of course) that have been treated with radioactive material to make them way bigger than normal.

Did someone nuke your skeeters this year, too?

Who do you think it was?

Skeeters? What skeeters? When you don't get rain, you don't get skeeters. I'd take the Mega Skeeter over this dry climate though.

Looks like it's a good time to stock up on some Deet. Good luck Rita. Watch your back (and your front).:)

The widespread use of Insecticides and Pesticides here is the primary reason we're looking into moving to a more advanced part of the country. What scares us most are the 'misting systems' some people are having installed outside their McMansions. I'm sure the neurologists and cancer clinics are THRILLED by the prospect of all the new business the misting systems may be creating for them. But herbicides are a big problem, too. Our moron neighbor sprayed some herbicide all around his property, three weeks ago. I had symptoms of poisoning (splitting headache and extreme thirst) within hours of his little spraying spree. The stuff still reeks. Every time this creep sprays, he spends the next week in the hospital. Cause and Effect seems to be a concept alien to a lot of people in this part of the world. We knew the man was a fool when we moved in and saw the thatch of dead grass in our boundary fence. So when I planted our screen of Cryptomeria and climbing roses, I made sure nothing was within six feet of the fence. But The Toxic Avenger waits for really windy days to spray, and has damaged quite a few of our plantings (and killed swaths of our grass). Pyrethrins, by the way, are mildly carcinogenic. We're going to be bitten by mosquitoes, regardless. I'd rather be exposed to West Nile while my immune system is working (and not suppressed by insecticides). Michelle 224, the bat houses sound great. And if the guano falls to the ground, they'll be better still. I can't imagine a better fertilizer. Now, If I could only persuade our possum to stop barfing on our patio...

I'll reiterate what others said. These are my opinions from a very personal perspective. However, these things may work for you. I really dislike having a washer and dryer in a hallway. I still iron some clothes, so I like a place to keep my ironing board up alot of the time. I'm not a fan of kitchens that open to the great room. When we have visitors I don't like looking right at the sink with possibly dirty dishes. Personally, I would like at least the island to run the other way to at least offer a visual separation. It's generally a poor layout for someone who cooks or bakes alot. The pantry is nice and large and will probably get alot of use because of the layout in the kitchen. Would be nice if it weren't so many steps away. I can see a layout this open if you have small children you want to keep an eye on in the great room. I like that your guest rooms are somewhat private, kind of in their own wing. If I were a guest staying in those room, I'd prefer a smaller closet with room for a couple easy chairs, or a bench to put a suitcase on. It's hard to read the dimensions, so not sure how large they are. In our new house, our guest rooms are way too small. We often have guests for 2 weeks, and it's difficult for them with alot of luggage. I find your master closets a bit awkward. Three doors opening up into the tiny hallway. Take a look at switching the closets and the bath. It would utilize that hallway space better, and you wouldn't have two long skinny closets with only hanging space. You might be able to have some shelving and a bench if the closet were at the end. I generally don't like closets at the end of baths, but in this case it works better I think. You might be shy on coat closets, and a place to put window gear. A bench to take shoes off might be nice, too. We have them at both our front and back door. It kind of reminds people to remove their shoes when coming in. Can't wait to see your finished product. It will be beautiful.

No freezer and no water in the pantry. How far away is your pantry? Here is how you poach an egg in the microwave (courtesy of The Kitchn). Grease a coffee mug. Break your egg into the mug. Add 1 tsp water. Cover the mug with a saucer. The next step takes some experimentation depending on mic's power and other factors: Nuke for however long it takes to get to your desired degree of doneness. I prefer a fairly congealed yolk, but not a hard yolk. I'm still experimenting. In my old house with a 900 watt oven, 40 seconds was usually good. In the new house with an 1100 watt oven, 40 seconds gives me a hard yolk. I have also discovered which of my coffee mugs gives me the results I want. Microwaved poached eggs are not as good a "real" poached eggs, but for a quick breakfast, they are fine for me. P.S. Not always, but maybe once or twice a month, the egg will explode. It is contained by the saucer on top of the mug.

If you focused on some greens and lots of whites in your furnishings and even some certain green on white, trellis prints in drapes or roman shades, over time, that will make your home look like a lovely garden. Than you can accent with the colors of your favorite flowers. You have a lovely home, you just have fun making it yours!! No one goes into the Forest and talks about removing all the trees and planting only bright annuals, that bloom for a few weeks. They marvel at the height and breadth of the trees! and may add some bulbs here and there where the sun allows. Bring is some brighter white lights in areas as you can and just love the fun you have doing soo. Such a work of many craftsmen is your home! It's done by humans, so flaws may show up. Some might bug you and other may not. As long as your warm in the winter and cool in the summer you have shelter, and thus time to go through phases of your home redecorating.

LOL @ summer! You're right, girly!! During the two years we experienced such a bad drought here, I didn't miss the skeeters one bit!

It's been a strange "bug year" here. The skeeters are huge, and we have a gazillion of these little "sweat bee" things swarming everywhere. We've never had them like this before. Every year is an adventure, it seems!

Are y'all normally dry or is it just this year? The farmers are just getting wheat harvest underway here, so they don't want any rain. Looks like it's going to be a stormy few days, though.

OOPS! I rambled! I'll "shush" now. :-)

We've got big ones in Northeast PA. We were up there for a week, and diligently sprayed ourselves. But, the one time we didn't - oh boy! They had a field day with me. Must be all the sweet blood LOL.

I would still rather have rain than drought.

Like Summer said....it's way too dry here for many skeeters. Besides, they don't like me. When Jammer and I sit outside in the evenings he is slapping skeeters and fussing about them and I never even see one. I guess I'm just too sweet for them???

We have had rain off and on for WEEKS! The skeeters are now giants and they scare me. As the Dh and I spent a few moments at the table yesterday, I noticed one on the wall, which made me have the deer in the headlights look. Skeeters love me and the kids so he didn't live to long. Makes me itch just thinking about it!

I haven't seen a lot of bugs this year,it's been pretty cool. But I have seen lots of spiders,which scare me to death. I always think the'll crawl on me and bite me!

It's been too cool so far in Iowa. We have had lots of rain so when the sun decides to shine the sheeters will be here for sure.

Now that you mentioned it...no skeeters here, because of the draught. Nice! Just wish the wasp, bees and yellow jackets would leave my Hummer Feeders alone.

It's been too cool for them so far here in Minnesota.
Did you all know the state bird for Minn. is the mosquito? Getting bit by 3 of them is the same as giving a pint to the Red Cross.

I wrote on my blog about black flies. I couldn't believe they could be as bad as buffalo gnats, but my sister (in Maine) commented that I was soooooooo mistaken. She says they are worse!

DH and I should be up north during peak black fly season. Oh, boy...
