Comments (57)Great thread...it's great to see some of my favorite things on other's lists. I have just now been able to afford to really pick things for myself and my tastes, so some I have not had for long, but others have been with me since childhood.. My mother's lenox china (now mine) My Grandmothers sliver tea set (also mine) Various crystal and sliver candle sticks of my mom & grandmothers. Crystal vases My crystal Doilies my mother and great grandmother made Silk ribbon embrodery work of my moms Yellow, my favorite color, especially paired with blue and white. Antique pine and newer painted pine Walnut furniture Wood floors especially wide planked pine Art Glass especially that made by my mom's best friend Ceramics in vibrant colors especially red My broken tile backsplash (while new, is totally me) and I got to help create it:...See MoreHELP! decorating my formal dining room
Comments (47)Hi, Sarah.. I am coming into this thread late in the game but I did read through all the posts. I wanted to share a couple of thoughts and experiences but I am short on time so I will apologize in advance if I sound short or harsh. I have a red dining room and I have grown to hate it. My wood is a medium to dark oak and I think it does nothing for it. I think it will do much less for your darker and more formal wood. My sister just did her dining room in a blue (leaning towards teal) and it looks smashing with her dark wood. I am the LAST person to choose blue.. it's just not one of "my colors" but I have to say I think it works very well in your room. I tend to green and I still prefer the blue mockups over the greens. You keep referring to this as the "formal dining room" but the southern living elements you are wanting to decorate around are much more casual to me. I think you need to stop and take a breath and think about whether you want a formal dining room as your furniture suggests or a casual family style dining room like your bowl suggests. If you want the formal dining room then I'd use the tuscan bowl and the other southern living pieces in the kitchen. Whether the dishes in the china cab are valuable monetarily or or personally, they are on display for a reason, I'd presume? Are they family heirlooms? I would never suggest that you store them away-- if for no other reason, because they work much better with your furniture and with the gorgeous shutters. I strongly recommend that you look at pictures in the gallery and review the ones shared in this post with similar furniture and see if you can find a style that is cohesive and approaches what you see in your minds eye. I don't mean this disrespectfully (because I have been there myself) but you are going in the direction of a real mish mash of styles and your furniture is such a strong element in the room I don't think it's a room that will gracefully accept the eclectic look. I agree with all others on the shutters-- love them! They look beautiful as they are....See MoreCreative minds needed for dressing room project
Comments (6)Hi, Fun idea! I just did a friend's LR in this color scheme, working around her chocolate sofa and white walls. Her room looks very soothing, sophisticated, and elegant, which seems like a great feeling for a dressing room. A beautiful wall color to work with both chocolate chair and white woodwork, etc would be a smoky, taupey lavender like BM lavender Lipstick or BM Beach Plum (this is the color family, but of course, you will need to check these colors in your room with the light, etc). This is a cool look that evokes an updated version of the beautiful rooms in old Hollywood movies (updated Regency look). The floor could be a FLOR solid taupe like FLOR toy poodle Loco Cocoa or Coco Chocolate, depending on the depth of the chocolate chair. Or, FLOR solid Ground Bittersweet for total comfort and luxury if the chocolate color works with your chair. For a more modern look, you could do FLOR blocks with lavender, chocolate, taupe. I am not sure if your chocolate chair is covered or not, but if you are reupholstering it, a deeper lavender in a Dupioni silk or velvet (cotton or silk velvet) would be yummy with the chocolate. Accents of charcoal/black will work with this as well. For your artwork, black or silver frames would be great against the lavender wall. Crystal lamps on the dressing table with black silk or taupe/gray silk shades would complete this sophisticated, timeless look. Comments (21)Sharlene, Aww thanks! I've missed you too and your beautiful roses and yard (and big Mo!) Dan, thanks that was during the first flush last June, hoping for a repeat June 2016! Hans, I can totally relate! I even tell myself 'no more' and then I see another that begs to be in my garden. Cadiarose, sorry you had to get rid of your Angel Face :( I start out strong but always end up with the dreaded blackspot at some point in the summer too. Seil! Yay! Can't wait to hear about your rose show adventures this year and see your beauties. Emrogers, The Fairy in a vintage wheelbarrow sounds delightful! I can't wait to see pictures! I painted ours a soft candy pink last summer :) It was getting rusty and I figured why not?!? You know, I think I got lucky with my Angel Face, as I've seen some not so pretty ones at the nurseries. Anne, nice to meet another Michigan gardener! And Northern Michigan to boot, how wonderful! I've ordered twice from Palatine and get the Nov. delivery but haven't had great luck, I think this year I will order from them and get the delayed until spring delivery, this sounds like the perfect time! What did you get? Carrie, wow, another Michigan gardener! How fun! Good luck with your roses! It is such a rewarding hobby! Molie, thank you for the compliment on Angel Face! Believe it or not this one was a "body bag" or early season bareroot that was from a big box store (can't remember which, possibly Menards/Lowes/Home Depot. I have been very lucky with this one! I have seen Angel Face out this season at Menards (just this week!) so maybe you can pick one up there, and you can't beat the price, they are usually under $10 and sometimes on sale for $3 at Menards! Worth a shot, if I were you I'd get a couple and pot them up to see how they bloom to make sure they are actually Angel Face (since body bags are notorious for being mislabeled) before you plant it in the ground. Sorry about losing your Tiffany! I lost mine to a cold winter and not planting deep enough for our cold zone, it was the first big rose bush I had purchased at a nursery and I was so sad when she didn't come back the next year so I am excited to try her again. Love the soft pink and yellow color combo! Carol, thanks so much! Yeah can't really take too much credit, just got lucky with an Angel Face body bag on that one! On a happy note it looks like my Paradise Found made it through it's first winter in the ground! I always think of you and your positive praise of PF when I look at mine! I love those big gorgeous blooms!...See Morepostum
