Wave to me - we'll be in Asheville, NC area, about 40 minutes from you at the same time. Haven't made it to Greenville yet but have a friend who lives there and there's a great market in Travelers Rest on Saturdays - check it out.

On a Whim just outside of Leesburg VA, and Lucketts Antique Store in Lucketts VA - about 1 mile apart on Rt. 15. 40 minutes away from Rt. 70 and Frederick MD. These are two of my favorite places to haunt. Leesburg is a picturesque town with a lot of antique shops.
If it was this weekend I would send you to a couple of once- a- month barn sales in MD.

I have never been in them, but there are several on Main St/Augusta St in Greenville. It's the same road but it just changes names. Main St is downtown. It's usually ME who has the work there, which, of course, means I have no time to check these out.

Also seen some good stuff on their CL.

Sorry to hijack, Bee. Have a wonderful trip. I would take the small roads and just stop at whatever little spot struck my fancy. Lots of little antique places in VA and NC. Enjoy!

Greenville is a wonderful town! Definitely check TripAdvisor for restaurants as they have many good ones. They also have a wonderful working artist studio area (converted from an old parking garage). If you will have children with you, get them going on the hunt for the bronze mice scattered around town. If I remember correctly, I think there is a place in town where you can pick up a hints sheet...

You must go downtown.
There are hundreds of restaurants. Soby's is good and so is Deveroux's. A Tupelo Honey Cafe just opened this week.

Falls park is a wonderful place to visit, too.

As far as thrift stores, we have quite a few Goodwills. Check out consignment stores.

There is a fabric shop named Tony's. It is located just outside of town on South Pleasantburg Dr. near Greenville Tech.

Bee, not sure which way you'll be heading down. If you are coming down I-85, there's a great fabric store called Mary Jo's in Gastonia outside of Charlotte. It's big and prices are cheap. There's a very cool antique/consignment place in Charlotte on South Blvd called the Sleepy Poet that I love. Also, bestyears is right that there are good restaurants in Greenville. Tupelo Honey is a great Asheville restaurant that has expanded, from what I understand, into Greenville.

I am from Greenville, don't know what you're looking for, so much is overpriced and ordinary (even in those upscale boutiques downtown) but the The Art's Company at The Shops at Greenridge/Woodruff Rd.is great and downtown, The Lazy Goat restaurant is fab. You will probably like best the downtown area for it's ambiance, shops and dining.

The Art's Company originated in my current hometown of 18 years, Seneca SC. The owner moved it for several years to Haywood Mall, sold it recently and now it's on Woodruff rd.

A place I love, Washington Av., Concrete Creations.

I am from Anderson, SC - 20 minutes from Greenville. You will love Greenville's downtown, but if you want a side trip, go to Anderson one evening. Their downtown is booming on weekend nights!

The fabric stores mentioned above are also nice.

If you are going to Asheville, are you taking 1-26 through Johnson City, TN on the way down or on the way home? That's where I live now. It's 1 hour from Asheville via 1-26. We actually live in Jonesborough - the oldest town in TN and full of antique stores. :)

You guys never fail to disappoint! We are staying downtown along the water. My dh goes often. I will be checking out all your suggestions!

I thought you were coming from Maryland and when you said you were going to be in Asheville, I thought perhaps you were taking the scenic route. It's only an hour longer from us in TN to MD .

Weren't those antique (thrift? re-sale?) store chairs sold out from under you relocated to somewhere on the way to Asheville? Western VA?

The art museum at Bob Jones is world class and only a few miles from the downtown area.

brevard, nc has a cute little downtown to wander... very small, but only ~ 15 min from greenville i think...

Sorry, Brevard is a solid hour away, closer to 2. But it's lovely!

Brevard is 1 hour from Greenville and 40 minutes from Asheville. It's 1.5 hours from Johnson City, TN.

Asheville is a little over an hour from Greenville. I drive it often when going to Anderson.

I'm so glad I stumbled on this thread! We will be in Greenville a week after you, bee, so these restaurant suggestions are very helpful. We had been thinking about the Lazy Goat. We'll be coming from north Alabama and haven't nailed down our route yet. We are also staying downtown so can't wait to visit some of the shops there. Thanks!

We moved away from Greenville a couple of years ago, so things could have changed, but we used to like driving up to Landrum. There was a nice little antique store and a good quilt fabric & yarn store. At one time there was a nice art gallery as well. Have fun! I miss Greenville.

Monday update:

Drove to Asheville on Saturday, enjoyed Tina Fey's audio book on the way. Met an ex-now-retired co-worker of my dh's and went to the Corner Kitchen for dinner. Excellent meals all around. (If anyone goes, do NOT follow your gps to get there, the address is wrong and you end up in the valet parking for a hotel down the street--call the restaurant and get an alternate address to use for your gps)

Sunday spent the day at Biltmore, Took the regular tour and also the architect tour so we were able to get up on the balconies and roof! And also took the servant's tour and got to see the sub-basement, how it all worked behind the scenes--very Downton Abbey.

Got to Greenville last night, the Goat is right next to our hotel, maybe tonight for dinner. Last night we went to Tupelo Honey, just opened last Tuesday--excellent dinner!
