Wow! That's interesting! I have been crawfishing, once. Loved the tail meat. We threw the rest of the crawfish away.

How do they eat them there? Do they peel them? Suck the innards out? Eat the shell? Put hot sauce on them & gobble them whole?

Glenda, that reminds me of the crawfish boil at Lana's house when we had the get together. It was my first time and I have to say it was soooo good.

I have never had them. Do they taste more like shrimp or lobster?????

Nita, Lana had a low country boil, similar.
I do that with shrimp.

You have to suck their heads, yuck, but big time eating here.

Reminds me of when I was a kid.....we used to go down to the canal and gather crawdads and go home and Mama would cook them for dinner.
We were very poor and it was a feast......water was a lot cleaner way back when.
Loved water cress salad, too.
Thanks for bringing back some good memories.

I love crawfish! I don't think you "have" to suck the heads..I never have! That feast Lana fixed was the 1st thing I thought of too Nita, when I saw that picture!!!

crawfish is one of my favorite foods ever!! yum!

My DH belongs to a motorcycle group and last year they wanted to have a low country boil. It was held at our house, and I just couldn't comprehend the combination of stuff being boiled together--potatoes, sausage, corn and shrimp. To me it was really strange.

Nope - but I'd love some of that corn and those
potatoes. They look delicious.

Looks delish! I'll be over with cut lemons. I'm a Northener. When I was a kid, we had a small creek (crick) near our house and we hunted "crayfish" but no one ever ate them.

Just cannot eat something that is still looking at me! Now I do like the crawfish/shrimp pizza from Deanne's in Bucktown/New Orleans!

Ah, crawfish etoufee! We have a pond, and around the pond are crawfish towers (they can take out the undercarriage of a mower when the towers are dry!). A neighbor taught me to put a piece of bacon on a string, lower it into the tower, and bring it up with crawdad attached! I admit I don't like purging them (feeding them on cornmeal for a few days) but the etoufee makes it worthwhile! Oh, and you need fresh okra from the garden, too.

Crawdad, mudbugs. Just a couple other names for them. I don't think they have much taste. Rather have shrimp.

I picture myself toddling at the age of 2,red coffee can in hand collecting them at the river. Yes I like them. Haven't had any in years.

Some country low boils include smoked sausage links in theirs which I like.

One restaurant, nearby, where LKGrace and I met, years ago, serves it in a box top :o)

I loved the crayfish pie I had in Galveston. When I got home, I bought some at a fish market here but couldn't eat them because they were looking at me.
As a kid, I used small pieces of uncooked bacon on a string and pole to catch crawdads in the canal. I grew up in the same town as Carol. We just threw them back after we caught them. My mother was an Iowa girl so she wouldn't have known how to cook them.

How To Cook And Eat Crawfish

1. Boil or order three to five pounds (per person) of fresh boiled crawfish. You can purchase prepared seasoned mixes for boiling the crawfish with directions, if available in your area.

2. (Optional) Put on a special bib to protect clothing. (This allows a little more freedom with the crawfish.)

Note: Here in Louisiana we usually add whole potatoes, onions, and corn along with crawfish. We place newspapers and garbage bags on a big table, and once these are all done, we just dump everything on the table, and everyone just serves themselves!

3. Take a deep breath to enjoy the fullness of the aroma.

4. Grab the nearest crawfish off the pile.

5. Hold the crawfish with your left hand and gently twist off the tail.

6. Take the head and suck the hot, spicy juices out of it.

7. Squeeze your thumb and forefinger at the sides of the top of the tail, causing the shell to break.

8. Remove the meat and eat. Go to step 4 and repeat as often as you like.

Mudbugs!

As a firmly planted midwesterner, I have only had them a couple times...but it was sure fun :)

We do have them in our creeks also - not a lot, but you see them once in a while.

I'm sorry that just looks too gross for me. No way would I eat crawdads! I grew up along the banks of White River and caught plenty of them just for play, never to eat.

Glenda, your notes reminded me of a Minneapolis co-worker who went to Texas on vacation years ago. He said they were in a casual restaurant and ordered some seafood and the menu said it would be served on the table. They couldn't figure out why that would be mentioned -- of course their meal would be served on the table, aren't all meals? And then the waiter brought over the big pot and dumped everything out in front of them. Surprised the heck out of them, but it sounds like a blast!
