Anyone buy themselves a Mother's Day present?

I did!

It's not as though my kids didn't give me presents (they did!), but I've been in uber-frugal mode for months and decided I could treat myself to a couple of things that fall into the category of "luxuries" even though they don't cost a great deal, because I don't really need them.

So I took advantage of two Mother's Day sales and bought myself Topaz Clean, a photo editing program, and three bundles of hand-dyed rug hooking wool from Ram in the Thicket.

Anyone else treat themselves today?

Well, 33 years ago, I delivered my Mother's Day present that day. He shares the same birthday with my brother. And today, their birthdays fell on Mothers' Day again.

I'm not a mother and my own mother passed on a few years' ago. So it is a bit of a "non" celebration for me. I went to the garden center (with about a million other people because it was a spectacularly beautiful spring day) and bought a couple of coral bells for the garden and lots of annuals for the garden and my porch. Then I went to Pier One and bought two fabulous wrought iron plant holders for my porch--just what I was looking for. So yes I bought myself several presents on if not for Mother's Day.

Actually, I will be interested to hear how well it works. I have wondered how you would manage the use of it. If you keep adding new stuff to the drum, how do you get to a point where you can take some out? It seems like you would have to have two going at any time.

Luckygal, where in the world are you? Somewhere near a beach obviously--but which one. Sorry no good luck on the TS shopping, do keep trying! Jeanne, I have two baker's racks outside, one is a corner unit--but neither look nearly as cute as yours with your collections and vignettes. I need to work on mine I think. That is so neat that you do the Farmer's market too. Candy, I'm another one who does tablescapes for my "imaginary" friends. DH will only eat at the table when we have company--rest of the time he prefers to eat in front of the tv. Karen, I didn't do a table, but I did glue a little cheese tray and glass dome on a pedestal and decorate it--can I get any points for that? ;o) Kathleen, the rooster napkins like in your photo that you shared with me are some of my favs. We don't do sit down breakfast often, but I like to just sit the table and display them on the plates because they look so cute.

I've only received flowers from my husband twice in the 25 plus years I've known him. He gave me flowers when I had chicken pox and we were dating. He also gave me flowers on an anniversary about 8 years ago. Brought them to my classroom even! I was shocked. My husband isn't big on gifts, but he treats me well throughout the year. I'd rather have that. He did surprise me this year with a huge Starbucks gift card. Everyone in the family turned in their coins and it came out to be $77. They know how much I love my mochas! My daughter made me breakfast in bed. My husband gave me breakfast in bed on Saturday. (He does this almost every weekend, though.) Sheryl

Sunny, One of the things that my husband agreed to early on in our marriage, is that if one of our kids wants/needs the step parent to do things for them (because the parent can't), then the child has to ask the step parent, not the parent. When my son wanted a co-signer on a car, I couldn't help him because I had just started my own business. I talked to my husband and he agreed to help but I felt that my son should ask him, not me. My son did ask him and got the car with my husband's help. My husband does the same with his daughter. If she wants something from me, she has to ask me. She still asks him all the time and he tells her, 'you have to ask SM'. My sons got angry a while back because they don't like when my husband has an opinion about anything. They think he should stay out of 'our life' but then I remind him that he's my husband and he is a part of 'our life' and I remind him of the things my husband contributes and that they don't mind when he does something where they benefit. They don't like it but they know it's true. What your husband should have told his daughter is that she would need to ask you to cook the food because he doesn't know how or can't do it all by himself. It really is up to the parent to expect their children (even adult ones) to respect their spouse enough to ask for themselves instead of going through the parent. It's much easier for kids to let themselves believe that their parent is doing everything for them and they don't need the step parent if all they have to do is ask the parent who then asks the step parent. Then they don't really appreciate the step parent because they can tell themself that their parent is the one doing everything for them. It's funny that my son will ask me for something and when I say, you need to ask stepdad yourself... he'll decide 'I don't really need it.' He has been giving my husband a hard time and would rather go without than ask my husband, well, that's HIS problem, not mine.

Also not a mother myself, but a friend always sends me a Mother's Day card signed by my pets(!). She is a widow with no children so I suppose this is her way of making the day special for others as well as herself. She's a kind lady.

I didn't buy myself a mother's day gift...my daughter came to see me, bearing gifts, but I often buy myself birthday or Christmas presents...or that is the excuse I use. It is always plants or a piece of junk from the flea market.

Mother's Day is the saddest day of the year for me, since I am no longer a mother or a daughter. So I bought myself an iPad. It was still a sad day, but I love my new toy.

After my mom left yesterday to go home (after a wonderful weekend together!) my DH and DS and I went to Menards to get a few things. We've been looking for a nice ornamental tree for our front yard and happened to find the perfect one, a weeping cherry tree, and it was on sale (!). We weren't even tree shopping, we just happened to start walking through the tree section after I found a few annual flowering plants. We were thrilled!

Wanda I'm happy you like your new Ipad, I like mine too. I want to say that you'll always be your mother's daughter and the mother of our own daughter. They're just in another dimension and they are being very patient and so are you until you all reunite. God bless you.

I did too! Since only one of my four children bothered to even call, I went to the greenhouse today after my doctor appointment and bought some annuals for my deck pots and then found some nice plant stands at Big Lots.

I bought a "large bag on wheels", would be the best way to describe it. I found it difficult to haul all my groceries in to the apartment building, and fiddling with the security door. So, I found this, put my grocery bags inside and just roll it, like luggage on wheels.
