Ouch, those ones that make your feet completely vertical look really painful.

I personally think the red boots would be nice for a wedding. ;-)

I think it is an absolutely charming idea. I would love to see a wedding like that. I don't know your dad, of course, but if you choose just to have your son escort you, I would be surprised if your dad were upset and saw it as any kind of disrespect. If you are old enough to have a son in the military, you are of an age at which I would think most women wouldn't be having their fathers walk them down the aisle anyway -- especially not for a second wedding. In fact, if I were your father, I would prefer it -- because I would want to SEE your son walking you down the aisle. Congratulations on your wedding, and good luck to your son in Iraq.

I think that this is a much bigger question than what the wording should be. Please forgive me if I am getting too personal. I may be way off base here, but perhaps this is something you might want to think about. I would suggest rethinking the idea of your fiance making any public vows at the ceremony to your son. No matter how much they love each other and no matter how thrilled your son is about the marriage, they aren't really getting married to each other, are they? You and your fiance chose each other, and you are the ones making the commitment of marriage. Your son may love the idea, but he isn't the one who got engaged; this would be a vow in which he has no choice -- even if you gave him the choice, how could he say no? (I realize you are just talking about a one-way vow from your fiance to him, but still, that affects the "vow-ee.") Your post refers to your fiance's making vows to your son "along with the ones that she says to me." But any kind of vows he makes to your son are, and should be, very different from the ones he makes to you. I think the close juxtaposition could make your son uncomfortable, even if he doesn't say anything about it to you (and even if he isn't himself totally conscious of it). Any child whose parent is remarrying, even a child who is very happy about it, will have mixed feelings, at least sometimes. That's normal and healthy. It's a big change in his life, and even good changes are stressful. It's wonderful -- really wonderful -- that they get along great. But what is the purpose of a vow, or any other kind of public commitment ceremony? What would it mean? When your son leaves home, would he be breaking it? If his father is alive, even if they have a poor relationship, what would this mean with regard to that? And what will happen when, inevitably, your son and your new husband quarrel? The added emotional load of some sort of vow can't help. You mention you have heard of others doing this. Unfortunately, some of those marriages probably didn't last. What is the psychological effect upon the child then, when the vows to him/her are broken along with the vows to Mom/Dad? I'm not saying this will happen to you; it's just a thought for the concept in general. Although I am sure that the adults truly believe they are doing this for the children's sake, to make them "special" and "involved" too, I suspect that this practice is at bottom more for the adults' feelings than for the kids' true well-being. Consider if you wouldn't get pretty much the same positive effect by doing things like having him be either your or your fiance's honor attendant and having your fiance make a fabulous toast to him at the reception which could come very close to a vow and include all the wonderful things he would have said if he'd done it during the ceremony. Maybe if the two of them really want some sort of ceremony for their own relationship, they could do it privately or just with family the day before the wedding or some other time. You will think of other ideas, too, I'm sure. Whatever you do will be lovely and meaningful. But for a variety of reasons I would keep it separate from the vows you and your husband will make to each other. Like the string about children "giving away" their parents. It's just too big an emotional load to impose on them, even though it all seems wonderful at the time. Please forgive me for being a wet blanket. As I said, I may be totally off here. But it is something to think about, perhaps with your clergy or whoever you go to for advice. You might also consider talking to adult friends whose parents remarried when they were your son's age. They will have a good perspective. The most important thing, of course, is that you all love each other, and you are all committed to being a family. You don't need a ceremony for that! I don't know if the OP is still reading this string, but I think that we are getting off her point. She didn't ask how to do a wedding inexpensively. She didn't ask for opinions on whether spending money for "just one day" is silly or worth it. She didn't give any indication that she felt that the budget was too much, either as a matter of principle or with regard to her own finances. Here is what she DID say: My problem with this is that one, they are way too young to be getting married, and two, he is not able to support himself (due to debts he has accumulated)let alone a wife. He has acknowledged his unwise money choices but has yet to take action to fix these problem areas. ... Should we help pay for a wedding that we really don't support ...? We want to still have a relationship with our son and finance but... I feel like my husband and I are in a no win situation. Her question was not how to economize. It was whether, given that she feels they are not mature enough or prepared to get married right now, it would be wrong for her to agree to pay for the wedding. The dollar figure wasn't the issue (for all we know, pecan is a bazillionaire who would be happy to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for a wedding --IF she approved of the marriage), it was the message of approval and endorsement for what she understandably considers an unwise move on her son's part. I doubt she would feel any different if they came to her with a budget of $500. What would make her feel good is if they came to her and said they had decided to wait until they are older and financially stable. Pecan, how are you doing with this dilemma?

I agree with the others, your 'unmadeup' face is quite stunning! Similar to the pic of Bobbi Brown, I'd go for a very light makeup job, just to enhance your natural beauty. You have beautiful eyes, so I'd just add some mascara to really show them off. A light touch of foundation could blend any different tones in your skin, and a hint of colour on your cheeks. Your lips are a nice colour, so you could decide to go bare or wear something similar to Bobbi's shade, in the photo. As far as the shoes, they are really pretty, but I do have one question. Have you ever worn that style before, where the outside length of the shoe is closed, but the inner side is open? That's exactly the style I wore 35 years ago when I married, and they really hurt my feet after a short while. Years later I bought another pair of dress shoes in that style, and experienced the same thing. I don't know what it was, but that style shoe is the only kind I've ever worn, that isn't comfortable on me. If you've worn that kind before, then I'm sure those will also be fine!But if you haven't, perhaps you could go to store, try on something similar and walk around in them, just to make sure you find them comfortable. Hm... what does the dress look like?

I can tell you what kind of footwear I'd be wearing if I tried on any of those shoes. They sell them in the ER and they are custom made of plaster.

LOL...I think I'll go barefoot and comfy! These are amazing huh? I got this in an email and it said they are the latest craze in Japan. I just can't imagine! I hate heels.....can't imagine wearing any of these!

I got the same e-mail and there was also another part to it that showed the shoes women wore years ago when they bound their feet too keep them from growing.One picture showed the foot of a woman and the toes were curled under and looked like they were stuck to the bottom of her foot.They had grown that way.Another was a foot that looked kind of like the first shoe.The heel was squished against the ball of the foot and there was a split in it.It was horrible.Can you imagine the pain.Wish I knew how to post it here.

Number 3 is very nice. Love the glitter! But my vote would have to be the last ones. I'm a sucker for a classic black patent leather pump :) Before we can make an educated decision we need to see your dress. Bet you can find some doozies for us to choose from!!!

My feet and legs hurt just looking at these! lol!

Actually number 3 looks stretchy and comfy except for the height. The foot is not held at that much of an angle than many regular shoes if you look closely. Number 4 is similar.

Number two really cracks me up. Does the gal wearing them wear a really low pony tail? Is there a jockey on her back?

I'll admit it, proudly, there was a time I would have worn the first red pair, and the last black pair.

I loved wild shoes! Still do, but I can't wear them any longer...partially because of all the un-sensible ones I wore during my wasted youth!

If you are going to wear your Jeans Skirt and the fringed matching jacket, I think you should go with the second ones shown. And just think how much fun the boys would have watching Granny make tracks. LOL

After watching that Robert Duvall movie, I think it was called Broken Trail, and one of girls in it had bound feet, I read up on it. OMG. One of the reasons they bound the girls feet was so sick, it's not repeatable.

If someone actually wore shoes like these, Gwanny, their calves would never forgive them. Those are just too weird for words! lol
