Did you see this free pattern? If you do it in any fabric with a lining -- a double layer -- you'll get strong enough for shopping.

I think I'm going to do one with 4 denim squares on the bottom and cotton up the sides. The denim should provide a sturdy base and the cotton less bulk so I can fold it up and keep it handy.

OTOH, for my regular shopping I keep these in my purse all the time. They come in two sizes (I linked to the smaller because that's what I like), they're made from strong nylon that comes in cheerful and attractive prints, they fold up so small that three of them folded together are no bigger than my wallet and they wash beautifully to go back into service.

I know I could make the same thing for a lot less. But I can't find attractive nylon prints like that. And these things are so well designed and durable that they've more than made up for what I spent on them over the 18 months or so that I've been using them. They always get attention and I'm never without one when I need it.

Oh you are right up my alley now. If you want a no-nonsense grocery tote, I suggest this site. They're on a crusade to give alternatives to the plastic grocery bag. I have several very sturdy canvas bags I keep in my jeep all the time so they're handy. I have also purchased a few of those 'green bags' at markets, and the homemade ones are definately worth the time/effort/money to make. They're by far more sturdy. The other bags seem to be mostly made of some non-woven stuff, almost like meshed interfacing.

I like this one. But prefer the straps to go completely around the bag so there is support under the bottom.

I love those nylon bags, wish they were in Canada! I made some lined bags that folded up into a pocket but I can't remember the web site. Anyway, I felt they were too much work when I can buy good ones at many locations for $1.00. It is a good way to get rid of fabric you want to use up.

I took a plastic bag from my local store and cut it open and used that as a pattern. Worked great, nice size, sturdy, etc. I used the tutorial from craftsters.org and have made several for my friends and for us, too.

If you don't feel confident about sewing those morsbags look super simple. Did you see the animated demo? There's a spot on the link where you can print out a PDF or watch the animation online.

You could definitely do that -- nothing but a few straight seams. And you'll feel so accomplished when you have and ready for your next sewing challenge! ;>
