Trash holders for plastic grocery bags?

I am looking to replace an IN-BIN trash bag holder.

It is a white plastic frame with 4 hooks to hold plastic grocery bags and a top that swings open. It has a navy canvas cover attached with velcro, very easy to remove to wash. It fits inside a lower cabinet and is a great way to reuse grocery bags.

I bought this 13 years ago. While it has lasted well, some of the plastic has chipped and the top door doesn't swing open easily anymore. I would love to replace it and would buy more too. Last I checked the company no longer makes this wonderful product. Does anyone know where this product or something similar can be purchased?

I'm going to be no help other than to offer sympathy: I saw your thread title and immediately thought of our IN-BIN. We bought 2, gave one away, and have used the other heavily. I really liked the design, with the washable fabric cover attached with velcro and the lid. Thankfully ours hasn't broken and the plastic part and lid has even been run through the dishwasher a few times. Really smart design.

I, too, was sad when I couldn't find any more. As were friends who saw ours. It's not as critical anymore as those bags are being phased out around here.

There are similar wire frames, but I've not found any as nifty as the In-Bin. Ours is in storage or I'd take a photo to share.

Here in Montreal, over the last year, there has been a seachange from disposable to reusable bags in grocery stores. One store started providing high quality cloth (or plastic-impregnated strong paper) reusable bags for a dollar. The bags were so gosh-darned useful that people started buying them and using them not just for groceries, but for carrying stuff all over the place, advertising the name of the store as they went. The other stores quickly got involved, and started competing to make more and more attractive ones, so it was their bag that was being carried, not the competition. The plastic bags are still available for people that want them, but carrying one makes you a pariah on the street. This time last year, you would see hundreds of those bags stuck in trees and streetlights, breaking down in alleys and filling trash cans. Not any more - the combination of real utility (the bags are actually very good - I use them to carry things to work, for luggage, in the garden, lugging tools in my workshop, and for storage when homebrewing), low cost (the bags are printed with the store's name, so it's free advertising) and social stigma seems to have corrected this problem in a very big way. One unexpected problem that has arisen is that I used to use those plastic bags as trash bags. Now, I find myself buying real plastic trash bags, which is a habit I have to break.

I keep plastic bags tucked into empty paper tissue boxes. I find the "boutique" size is the easiest to store. Then I scatter them around the house in bathrooms, closets,etc and in the car. A surprising number of plastic grocery bags can be stuffed into one empty tissue bag. Years ago I bought a bunch of little plastic trash cans that are made to reuse plastic grocery bags. A link for something like them is below. I'll be the first to admit, they are not "decorative" but by now, everyone "gets" the point. I can loop 4 or five bags in each can, one inside the other. I had a few and used them around the house and for traveling and then one store put them on sale for 49Â¢ and gave 5Â¢ credit for using it right away, and of course 5Â¢ credit each time you use them. The older female cashiers are pretty chintzy on how many bags they'll credit you so you need to watch for that at these stores although another nickel or dime isn't *that* big a deal. I also got a bunch for free from Menards so I have a bunch now and I use them for a lot of things. I was skeptical at first about whether I would use them consistently. At first it was just Rainbow that gave the credit but that's my preferred store most of the time anyway. I wondered if I'd remember them when I needed them but I started just leaving them in the vehicle and then just had to remember to bring them in. There's been a time or two I forgot to bring them in but that's not often. I've probably paid for them now from the credit. And I do line them for messy things. I usually prefer to pack my own groceries. Mine have the plastic card for the bottom and are very easy to clean. I can't help but think that the poly version would be more sanitary than canvas but who knows. A quick spray with cleaner, a wipe around and I usually let the cleaner sit on it for a bit then a rinse off and hang them up. Who says they're not washable? :) But even with the regular plastic bags, doesn't anyone else carry more than one at a time? Depending on the weight and bulk I can carry 4 or 5 in each hand pretty easily if they're not too heavy and bulky so I don't see how I can carry more in the reusable ones. I can often carry a couple of the reuseable ones in each hand too.

Carress, I haven't purchased a garbage bag in a dog's, er, well, maybe ... a cat's age. I have some barn cats (only one lets me pet it - except the other two let me touch them a bit just before or during feeding). I had a very shy dog (that was my uncle's, prior to his death) for a while - but he disappeared. At festivals, fairs etc. where my son worked as an entertainer, I've got some from the operators to pick up aluminum pop cans when they were not recycling themselves, but more of them are having a local agency separate the garbage, now. grindel, The fairly large bags (18 kg. - about 40 lbs.) that I bought filled with cat food are multi-layered brown paper, with a plastic bag as the inside layer - I'm not sure whether it's attached to the inside layer of brown paper. If I were to recycle, I'm sure that they'd want the paper and the plastic separated. As it is, I fill the bag, tramp it down, and tie it, then put it out with the garbage. Which is put into a landfill. When I lived in the city, I put garbage into the plastic grocery bags and tied several together. Recycled metal, paper, cardboard, boxboard. Didn't compost, as I lived in a rented townhouse, but now that I live on a farm I compost in the corner of the garden. I think that I have goofed, for I have not put out trash for some time, and think that I must attach stickers, now - that cost $1.75 each. I don't know whether all kinds of plastic bags are of the same kind of plastic, and I'm told that if they mix the various kinds of plastic, it messes up the whole batch - that we must put those water and pop bottles as No. 1, many of the oil, bleach, etc. bottles as No. 2, etc., with most of the trays that coookies, etc. come in as No. 6. In Canada we have 4 litres of milk in three bags of heavy plastic, no printing, that many of us wash out carefully and use to hold garden produce that we freeze for winter. Those three clear bags are carried inside another plastic bag and some of them carry the recycle logo of No. 4. I've written to a milk distributor and they tell me that the clear bags are No. 4, as well. I have found some containers labelled No. 5, as well. I think that bread bags can be put into the plastic recycling boxes at the grocery stores that are intended for the grocery carry-out bags. Some stores (mainly discount grocery) have a bin near the checkouts where they put empty carboard cartons that the food came in, and I use them when I can. I have some cotton bags that I've collected from various sources that I've been intending to take for groceries - but forget. aliska12000, When one hits a cat on the head with a hammer ... or shoots it - the result is instantaneous death: no trauma. Same as using a needle at the animal shelter/vet hosp., it seems to me. It's just that the description/mental image seems somewhat more gross. But - we humans put one another to death, as well - legally. The modern way seems to be using needles. More humane, does it seem to you? They say that they bounce around quite a lot in an electric chair when the various shots of current hit - but I'm not sure whether the first shot kills them ... or at least renders them unconscious. I hope so. Only a few countries still do that. Maybe they'll soon decide that such things may be inhumane? ole joyful

Lawjedi - Thank you so much! Not the same, but similar concept and size, plus has a bonus bag holder too.

This is the one we have. Also by Simplehuman. It can be wall hung, but ours sits on a pantry shelf. Works well for us.

There is a company that makes one that mounts inside a cabinet door-- I think it might be Rev a Shelf. I have definitely seen it in researching.

We have this one by Simple Human, works great so far, but we haven't put it inside our cabinet door yet. It's in our pantry for now. Better yet, it was only $10!

It looks like the last few are just for storing the bags. The IN-BIN and the ones kris_ma and lawjedi suggest actually hold a bag open so you can use it as a small trash can. Here's the one lawjedi mentioned:

The IN-BIN was especially cool because it could hook over the cabinet door or drawer in addition to hooking on its hanger. I kept it on my sink cab door on the inside -- open the door and there's your trash. If I was prepping and wanted a handy nearby trash, just pick it up and hang it from any top drawer. Instant trash bag that you could just sweep stuff off the counter and into the trash (lid was removable). The washable cloth cover made it look reasonably presentable as well.

Here's one with a hook that preserves that functionality:

but doesn't have a lid, a cover, nor (I assume) any hardware to make a fixed mounting point inside a cabinet (you'd always have to hang it over a door unless you kludge something up).

that lee valley one might work for me. right now i hang a grocery bag from a hook high up on the hall wall - to keep it out of range of my dog. She's old and feeble now and I doubt would be able to open a door... she probably couldn't find it if it was low and in plain site in the new place. I know she remembers where it is now from her younger days because she did manage to tear the bottom out just last week! I had no idea she could still jump at all let alone that high up!

I got one at Lowes to put under the sink. It doesn't have a lid though. It works great and it was cheap...The problem with some of the designs is that a grocery bag sometimes will have a small hole that is undetected and then liquid drains out and you have a mess.

I have an old style IKEA pull out with two small bins which are perfect fit for the plastic grocery bags. One bin for trash, one for bottles/cans. They still sell something similar, but I don't know if the new design can still use the grocery bags. The link just shows the pull out part, you then select your bins and lids. I know it is just plastic, but I have had mine for almost 10 years and it continues to work like a charm.
