grocery bags

Hey all you "bag ladies"...

Can you recommend a type of bag or pattern that would be a good substitute for those awful, plastic grocery bags? I need them durable & big enough (maybe enough to hold at least 1 1/2 to 2x what a plastic bag would hold), but not enormous. I also need to make at least 10.

I bought a small, blue tote ($0.59) from IKEA when I was there & that's OK, but I can't buy them on-line...in-store only. I'm thinking of picking more up on our next trip, but that could be a month or so. I also want something washable & very durable. I do like that the IKEA bags have long AND short handles. I wonder if I could just replicate the IKEA bag and the double handle idea. Hmmm....

I'm feeling "green" lately & want to do my part in being a bit more enviro friendly.
