slides to pictures, where would you go?

I found three slides really worth keeping. One of my girls with their paternal grand pa, and two of my oldest daughter, where she looks just like her niece...

Where would you go, to get pictures made of them?

To answer some questions & give additional info: We live in a pretty warm (most of the time climate) - coastal NC, near Wilmington. We're not sure about when we'll take the trip. Although it will be for our anniversary, which is in Oct, the trip can be any time. DH may be having elective surgery in mid-late summer. We are trying to decide if will take the trip before or after. We've talked about Scotland a lot because both our families are from there. We do want to go, but there are SO MANY other places both of us want to go. We'll never be able to travel to all the places we'd like to see. We'd love to go to Egypt (that is probably at the top of my list), but won't go because of the unrest there. I'm a little unsure about the political problems in Greece, but would love to go there. Italy and New Zealand have been serious considerations as well. We might enjoy some of the other islands (besides Hawaii) but want some place where there is at least some sightseeing. I prefer a very active vacation where I try to see as many sights as possible. DH is more relaxed and prefers to be on "vacation" time. We've learned to strike a happy medium on that. Thanks for the suggestions - you're giving us lots to think about!

some of my fav's still around include hamburgers at Redamaks in New Buffalo MI and yes I do drive to MI from Chicago just for their hamburgers LOL. We used to have a summer place in New Buffalo MI and that place is THE place to go for lunch & dinner. I still always visit Teibels in Schereville IN when in NW IN seeing friends, I always have the Walleye grilled. My DH makes us stop at Zel's for barbeque sandwiches & plain pulled pork in Hammond IN and Schoops for hamburgers - he won't drive to MI LOL. House of Pizza in Hammond IN when I'm in the mood for square cut, thin pizza. A few fav's long gone include Puntillo's Restaurant, growing up we used to eat fish (either lake perch or breaded cod) there every Friday, they closed up in the mid 80's :-( Ralphs Pizza we used to get pizza delivered on Sat nite or Sundays for Cubs or Bears games when I was little. There was also an awesome DQ around the corner from my house, we used to bug my dad to walk over there and get us a bag of dilly bars in the summer, when we were too little to go by ourselves LOL. Food was very different back then, I rarely find a place to go out to eat that is as good as the restaurants I grew up with :-( ~ liz

DS graduated from the University of Vermont in Burlington and one of his favorite sights was to watch the sunset over the Adirondack Mountains - either from a bench on Battery Park or up on the hill where the school is located. Add Ben and Jerry's ice cream and it's even better. We made many trips to Vermont while he was in school and our favorite time to visit was in the fall when the foliage is spectacular. However it's a beautiful state any time of year and we loved driving through all the scenic little towns and stopping at roadside farm stands. We contemplated buying a second home there and letting DS live in it while in school but it's an 8 hour drive from our home and we realized that we just wouldn't be able to spend that much time there. You're going to have a wonderful vacation. I think DH and I will have to make a trip back there - its been too long. Wow-what a really strange story! Where's Sherlock Holmes when you need him? I have to say, there were lots of things that didn't add up for me. For instance, the letters didn't start until this family arrived on the scene. Why did they keep renovating? and refinancing? Why sue the prior owners for not disclosing one weird letter? The girls easel. The conversation with one neighbor about another 'weird' neighbor, who he was sure was a suspect. Then, at the end, the homeowner admits to sending out anonymous creepy letters to get the neighbors back??? Then my thought was...'could he be 'the watcher'? It's speculation, but lots of questions for sure.

If you have several hunderd or more slides to convert, look into a converter fixture for your digital camera. For example, Nikon sells a fixture for their cameras for duplicating slides. It includes the light source. The camera mounts to the fixture.

A macro lens works best, however, both macro and standard lenses work. A macro lens brings a flat field into focus on the sensor/film plane (good for copying stamps, postcards, and documents); A regular lens brings a spherical surface into focus at the sensor/film plane.

lazypup, what software/hardware do you you use? I want to convert 4400 slides. The "conversion" kits on the market are cheapo (easily breakable hinges) plastic that only do 3 slides at a time. Help! I don't want to spend a fortune/the rest of my life doing this. Like at CVS.

Oklamoni: I second Sushipup's idea, since there are only 3. And to have them burned on a disc.

You might have trouble finding a camera shop nowadays, tho! (A chain near me recently closed).

I have had slides printed at Ritz camera shops -- maybe that chain is near you?

Also look online for photo printing places that cater to professional photographers.

(I did send a quantity of slides to DigMyPics, in Arizona, and they did a great job. It took me a while to overcome my worries that something would happen to them during shipment, tho... Also, my sister bought a home scanner to do some slides, and they just didn't look as good.)

I use either my Pentax K10d SLR body (10.2mp) or my Pentax K20d DSLR body (16.2mp) on an Asahi Pentax Auto Bellows II with an Asahi Pentax Super Takumar 50mm macro lens and an Asahi Pentax 35mm Negative & Slide copy attachment.

I have the Bellows set up on a copy stand with a diffused 6000degK daylight balanced photo light source.

I normally stop the lens down to f-16 for copying slides.

The photos come off the camera on a HDSC card and you can upload them direct to your computer from the card or transport them to a commercial printer on the card.

Using the K10d @ 10.2mp shooting in JPEG mode I have had 24x36 prints made with no appreciable noise.

I have a camera shop within 3 miles of where I live. I will take them there.

My daughters will be thrilled to have a picture with their grandpa.

I have an Epson flatbed scanner with a slide scanner built in. I put up to 4 slides (photo negatives also) into the scanner.

It will scan each slide as an individual file, but do them 4 at a time.

Great quality - this is a slide from the early 50's

I have an HP flatbed scanner that can scan slides and negatives. If you have a lot of slides, it is worthwhile to buy the scanner - you can use it for regular pictures and documents also.
