If you have several hunderd or more slides to convert, look into a converter fixture for your digital camera. For example, Nikon sells a fixture for their cameras for duplicating slides. It includes the light source. The camera mounts to the fixture.

A macro lens works best, however, both macro and standard lenses work. A macro lens brings a flat field into focus on the sensor/film plane (good for copying stamps, postcards, and documents); A regular lens brings a spherical surface into focus at the sensor/film plane.

lazypup, what software/hardware do you you use? I want to convert 4400 slides. The "conversion" kits on the market are cheapo (easily breakable hinges) plastic that only do 3 slides at a time. Help! I don't want to spend a fortune/the rest of my life doing this. Like at CVS.

Oklamoni: I second Sushipup's idea, since there are only 3. And to have them burned on a disc.

You might have trouble finding a camera shop nowadays, tho! (A chain near me recently closed).

I have had slides printed at Ritz camera shops -- maybe that chain is near you?

Also look online for photo printing places that cater to professional photographers.

(I did send a quantity of slides to DigMyPics, in Arizona, and they did a great job. It took me a while to overcome my worries that something would happen to them during shipment, tho... Also, my sister bought a home scanner to do some slides, and they just didn't look as good.)

I use either my Pentax K10d SLR body (10.2mp) or my Pentax K20d DSLR body (16.2mp) on an Asahi Pentax Auto Bellows II with an Asahi Pentax Super Takumar 50mm macro lens and an Asahi Pentax 35mm Negative & Slide copy attachment.

I have the Bellows set up on a copy stand with a diffused 6000degK daylight balanced photo light source.

I normally stop the lens down to f-16 for copying slides.

The photos come off the camera on a HDSC card and you can upload them direct to your computer from the card or transport them to a commercial printer on the card.

Using the K10d @ 10.2mp shooting in JPEG mode I have had 24x36 prints made with no appreciable noise.

I have a camera shop within 3 miles of where I live. I will take them there.

My daughters will be thrilled to have a picture with their grandpa.

I have an Epson flatbed scanner with a slide scanner built in. I put up to 4 slides (photo negatives also) into the scanner.

It will scan each slide as an individual file, but do them 4 at a time.

I have an HP flatbed scanner that can scan slides and negatives. If you have a lot of slides, it is worthwhile to buy the scanner - you can use it for regular pictures and documents also.
