Would you stay or would you go?

This is courtesy of another poster in another thread here (jrb 451 posted it in "What's Going on With the House Nextdoor" in Buying and Selling) , but it's buried in that thread and I think lots of people would enjoy reading this.

I feel so badly for the family who bought this home. How many of us have bought our dream home and looked forward to moving in?

What would you do, if this had happened to you?! (It's a long read, but was fascinating to me...)

That was a very creepy story. And no way would I have moved in with my kids. I would never live with myself if something had happened. Living there, I'd have a never-ending feeling of dread and that's no way to live. I can't believe no one solved the case!

I didn’t read all of it, but I read enough. There is no way I’d stay there. No house is worth that. How could you sleep at night? I wonder if they’d be able to sell it though!

I can't believe the ones criticizing sandy for her observations. I had a friend just like what sandy has described. For some reason (being co-dependant) or other, she didn't leave him. He did just what sandy described one time. Friend and I were in her kitchen getting a meal on the table. The guys were outside and friend's husband nudged my husband and said, "Watch this." Then he proceeded to yell that he wanted an iced tea and friend was to get it for him...pronto. Well, like I say, we were busy and the guys were doing nothing. She literally almost jumped out of her skin to get him a glass of tea. I told her to tell him to come in and get it and she said, "Oh no..I couldn't do that!" My husband was livid and we never went back....but, this was just one example of what I witnessed..which I am sure is the same with sandy...just one nail in a board of nails....she was just giving an example. This friend of mine would say, "If you're going to be a door mat, you're going to get stepped on." But..she was a living example of just that. The friend is a friend...you hate to drop out of their lives because of their poor decision to live with a bum, but that's what I finally did...just dropped out. This upset her very much, but I couldn't just go on watching it...now I don't have to see it. But..maybe sandy is a better friend that I was...I think it "is" her business if she is going to remain friends with this woman...it is right that she offers help.

I wonder why so many folks complain about the ads and banners so much, along with things being slow to load. Have you ever tied any of the numerous suggestions that are given repeatedly to be ad free and surf GW with no distractions? Did you try different things and they just did not work, or what? Since so many have problems with the ads and banners, you might try asking for assistance at Computer Help Forum They are a great bunch of folks who will help you until you can get the problem taken care of. They would be dumb not to charge all of you now knowing that you would pay. Not necessarily. If membership would drop, then the advertisers also would not being paying GW as much to advertise here. It would be a trade-off for them, imho. I doubt many people who only post at the pets or health forum for example would pay. I think most folks have several favorite forums here. I have about 25 saved to my Favorite Forum Folder that I either post to very regularly, or check on frequently and maybe just lurk, watching for some new good info. At last! Someone remembers Spiko the way I do.

We just came back from a memorial pilgrimage for my Mom, to my family's ancestral home to visit her grave and see a completed memorial project there that we funded. It was for Dad, who is almost 89 and not doing too well. It was stressful, but mostly due to Dad having acute anxiety. The motel was annoying because of some maintenance issues, but those would have been a pain even without the pandemic. The mediocre maintenance made me wonder what else they were "just getting by" with. However, the room was small, we brought sanitizer and cleaned every hard surface ourselves so I felt relatively safe. I didn't interact with too much in the room, and we kept the windows open during the day. I wasn't too worried about washed sheets or linens. The carpet was sketchy but they usually are. The air conditioner didn't work very well and had no filter, so we passed on that. The screen was bent so let in mosquitoes at night so we had to close. That was the worst part and some of the maintenance issues I'm talking about. The whole trip was stressful, all the constant mask management and hand sanitizing. We went to a public beach and met some folks out for a stroll. We were talking and one guy said, "Everything just feels uncomfortable." But as for safety, I did not feel I was taking high risks. But then I read science-based recommendations and follow them. But also, we did not eat out, even in our favorite outdoor deli/ice cream parlor. We picnicked on our own at all of the lovely local parks, and there were no crowds, it was nice, regardless of pandemic. I know too many people who have gotten sick by eating out and also flying so not going to risk it. Those venue are too closed in and you share the air with too many variables/people you don't know. I did not have a problem in the stores with not a lot of customers crowded in, and masked employees and customers. But if you do travel, bring lots of your own water and beverages, maybe even your own coffee maker, and lots of cleaning supplies. They gave us our complimentary breakfast in a brown bag, and had chairs outside the rooms on a little patio for eating. We sanitized our own chairs just to be extra safe.

I do like a lot of touristy spots: ie, Las Vegas. We went to "Fly Away" & took a sky diving lesson. Toured the dam. Saw a couple of shows. Paid a helicopter to fly us over Lake Mead & around. Stayed in a room right above the erupting volcano. Caesars Fantasy Towers was awesome. People in costume handing you towels when you get out of the pool. ☺ Been 3 times. Florida, I'd go back. I'd like to dive w/ the manatees & there are a few ship wrecks to explore. Great Cuban food. Hell Grand Cayman, I'd skip next time. ☺ Yes, that's a real place. The local, bad/barrio part of St Maarten, I would pass on. The local guy selling BBQ chicken out his kitchen window wasn't as good as the locals bragged. Mine was raw in the middle! ☺ (that's the trip where we arrived and our hotel had burned down. ha ha We couldn't understand why the taxi driver left us @ the airport & took the next fare when we told him where we were going.) Exuma Bahamas, Georgetown, was nasty on land, but GREAT diving if you just moor your yacht at sea on a coral reef mooring line, like our captain did...had FANTASTIC cayes!

I think I wouldn't have bought it in the first place

Not one of the things that are worth fighting for.

There are things worth fighting for, standing your ground, etc. As much as I love houses..they're not into this category, for me. Especially new ones..surely one didn't form overgrowing attachment to it yet. It's not Baskerville Hall or something, that you feel like you should go to, whatever happens, because it's been in the family for generations etcetera.

Thank you for sharing the article, it was for sure a great read..with no closure..))

I just can't imagine having well over a million dollars tied up in your dream home, and be unable to live there and also unable to sell it. This poor family didn't do anything wrong and they're just screwed 7 ways to Sunday.

Ghost can’t hurt you, there is a human behind of all the letters. I’d stay and won’t read any of the letters, and burn the letters in the front yard with all the neighbors around, and everyone brings a dish, it’s time for a block party! The key to a happy life is in your own hand.

I agree that it is a human. Probably someone whose relatives lived in that house and has fond but not realistic ideas that it should be kept the way it was. Probably including right down to the placement of every object. One of my SIL's was of that type. Even though her brother purchased the parents house every time it was mentioned she insisted no one should use it because it was her parents house. The person could be dangerous or simply someone that can not recover from the thought that the house is not the way it was with the same people living in it.

Wow-what a really strange story! Where's Sherlock Holmes when you need him? I have to say, there were lots of things that didn't add up for me. For instance, the letters didn't start until this family arrived on the scene. Why did they keep renovating? and refinancing? Why sue the prior owners for not disclosing one weird letter? The girls easel. The conversation with one neighbor about another 'weird' neighbor, who he was sure was a suspect. Then, at the end, the homeowner admits to sending out anonymous creepy letters to get the neighbors back??? Then my thought was...'could he be 'the watcher'? It's speculation, but lots of questions for sure.

I too found it fascinating reading. I think I'll go find the other thread and read the comments there.

I have an entirely different theory on who The Watcher is. I think it's related to Derek's job and his (apparent) meteor-ish rise to influence and affluence in his job. Perhaps it's someone at the insurance office with an axe to grind against Derek - someone who was fired, stepped on at the bottom of the ladder, passed over for an advancement, etc. If the person is now unemployed, he/she would have lots of time to do research on the house as well as do surveillance.

Very creepy, but financially I would have had no choice but to move into this house - wouldn't have even been able to sell it at a loss.
