The BIG count down until my sisters visit !

I am getting excited like a kid at Christmas! She will be here a week from tomorrow....you will have to excuse my giddiness.

I will be off beginning next Wednesday to take the cats to the vet to be boarded during her stay. She has an extreme allergy to cats, so they will not be able to be here. I will spend the day cleaning and washing everything to rid the house of any dander.

I have been keeping a box of things to wrap and give to her when she gets her. I also have an extra luggage bag so she can haul everything home...

I finished her video, and cry everytime I watch it. It is our world from when our parents were little, up to our lives as recently as November of '07.

I will also be giving her my cancer bracelet, and will have a different breast cancer survivor shirts for us to wear every day.

I will list her box of goodies in a later post. I have already rambled on long enough today.....

This is her first trip to Texas and her second ever trip on an airplane.

DH and I are having a BBQ with lots of friends, kiddos, and grands coming over for a party on Sunday the 18th. She leaves on Monday, so it will be our last harrah of her visit.

I am just so excited, it is nuts. I have told her that the only thing she needs to bring is herself (first) and 3 blocks of Tillamook cheese ! Something I can't get here but have to have!!!!

I just had to tell my KT family.

Oh wow!!! This is so great and I can't wait for your stories and pictures of her visit. How about I post a bunch of "congrats" and "survivor" snags and we can all make a big thread for her? Will that be okay?

Trin, I forgot your sister's name. Actually, I forgot if you ever told us.

Make the best of the remaining time you have with your DD, and try to enjoy it to the fullest! You will be astonished at how fast the time flies as the big day approaches, and then the wedding and reception that took all that planning will flash by in what seems like minutes! So treasure it! Prepare yourself for a big letdown once the wedding/reception hours are over....it was when we drove home from my DD's wedding that the tears fell - it was so lovely, but over so soon! Some women have postpartum blues after their babies are born. I didn't, but the post-wedding blues I felt after her marriage were severe, and other mother's I've spoken with have admitted to suffering the same. You will find that you treasure their book of wedding photos just as much as the newlyweds do! So enjoy the celebration and make her day shine.

You are absolutely right Anne. After 20yrs too. That's a remarkable run of such an aggressive cancer but still.... it does suck! As Heather says, she recovered quickly although I think it was day 2 post op that she went shopping! Marjorie sounds equally stoic and probably should be Heather's twin instead of me. I'm just not built with the same stuff as she is. I'd be the one asking for the morphine. I saw Heather go through chemo, surgery and then radiation virtually without complaint. She set the bar very high should I follow in her footsteps. I went with Heather for her pre-op anaesthetic visit. The anaethetist said "Don't worry - it's simple surgery! I wanted to scream at him - Simple..... for who! Compared to what your sister has gone through it may well be but when I worked with oncology children, it was often the simple stuff that seemed to them to be the last straw! They'd tolerate bone marrows/spinal taps but lose it when having blood drawn. If you don't have one - a fanny pack will make it a lot easier to have to hold the JP drains. Much easier than coiling the tubing and pinning it to your clothes. I will be thinking of your sister in the coming days. I totally understand your need not to be an active caregiver without a break. Please don't feel selfish. A worn-out caregiver whether it be physically or emotionally is just not an effective one. You are very wise to realize that ahead of time.

Thank you, I let Marjorie know you are all sending prayers and good thoughts. Heather, I would be a nervous Nellie too. I would rather be put out in a minute. Yes, Shirley I will be there. They moved her surgery up so she will be going in at 11:30 am tomorrow instead of 1:45 pm. Paul is picking me up at 9:00 am and I will most likely stay until visiting hours are over at 8:00 pm It will be a long day but Paul is lending me his Ipod which has some tv shows and movies on it. I am looking forward to watching some Thin Man movies while Marjorie is being operated on and while in recovery. I am not sure how long the surgery will be. I really hope Marjorie doesn't fret too much because it isn't good for her heart and that concerns me. She wanted to make sure a crash cart was standing by. I told her of course it would be. Her heart rate isn't supposed to go over 130 bpm but most often than not it is quite higher than that when she stresses or gets excited over something. Thank you all again. My brother for years would go on cruises and would talk of the great time they had, mentioning many of the benefits that others here have brought up as well: meals included, only unpack once, the shows and the other amenities on the ship. However it has never really appealed to me. The "only unpack once" sounds good, and not having to find accommodations in each new spot visited sounds great, but the rest of the experience did not seem enticing: shows? pass. gambling? I don't think so. Going somewhere "exotic" and then eating glorified cafeteria food? Bleah. And no matter where you go, even if the place might otherwise be a great place to visit, it is instantly crowded with people from the ship. However a couple of years ago, my wife was teaching on the Semester-at-Sea ship, which went out for a month-long voyage around the Caribbean, I went along as a plus-one, and had the best time of my life. She had to teach her class during the 12 days at sea, but on the days in port, she (and all of the students) were free to travel in and around the port country. The "voyage" was similar in many respects to a commercial cruise, but I think the differences are a big part of what made the trip more enjoyable for me. Some key differences were: no casino -- its been replaced with the largest library at sea. spends more than 6 to 8 hours in each port -- we had two or three days in each port rather than broadway-type shows there were sometimes lectures or movies about our upcoming destination small enough that it can stop in smaller, less visited ports we were allowed to bring aboard no more than two bottles of alcohol per person per port. The differences to me seem analogous to the differences between a credit union, and a large nationwide mega-bank, ie. same ostensible purpose, wildly different practices and methods employed in service of that purpose. For instance I'm sure there is someone at each of the major cruise lines whose job (in part) is to determine what the optimum level of quality for the food served in the regular service should be, to nudge people towards the pay-extra-restaurants, without driving people away altogether. Admittedly, since I've never been on a commercial cruise, I'm comparing my experience on the SAS ship with my cynical, pre-conceived notion of a commercial cruise. So even if you are a person who thinks "Cruises are not for me" there may be something similar, but slightly different that could be the time of your life.

How exciting!!! Her first trip to Texas? I bet you are planning a great big Texas welcome for her. Be sure to remember to tell us all about it!

I am expecting a visit from my sister this month too.

Oh I can read the excitement in your post too. How thoughtful to make that video for her. I'd be bawling too every time I watched it. I'm so excited for you, and I know, needless to say, you two will have a wonderful, fun time.

I love getting together with my sisters,i have 5 of them left and they all live in N.Y. state,and i live in S.Calif.We all talk every week and sometimes a couple of times a week to some of them.

Sisters are the Best!!

Trin, as others have said, the excitement is coming through loud and clear. I hope you have a wonderful and fun visit together. Please share the fun with us when you find the time. Tell your DS that she has a lot of cyber sisters that are sending her a welcome too.

Thank you everybody for sharing my excitement!!! This is just crazy...and bestlawn, I love your idea, how thoughtful is that? Another shock for her system~ I love it!!!
Just a little background on my family. Our parents both died within several years of each other, in 1987-1990. I think the three of us were so devestated, that we all just kept on with our lives. Nobody really spoke about it. There are three of us. I am the middle kid.We live in three different states. Oregon, Washington, and me in Texas.
I noticed that my brother and sister just were not talking, and had not for years. Some stupid personal tiff that neither wanted to back down on. Something stupid from the 70's.
Ok, so here it is guys....mom and dad are dead, are we really going to not talk to each other for the rest of our lives? I am not going to let this happen.
My lifes goal, if I did nothing else, would to get my brother and sister back together again. Whatever it took.
I kid you not, I spent years sending them pictures of each other, and keeping each other up on their personal lives.
I was determined as hell, and nothing worked.
Then, sis was diagnosed with breast cancer.
I had a hint of them getting back together again. This situation screamed we would not live for ever, and you two knock it off!!
They finally called each other, and my heart is at peace. It just took for one of us to have a brush with death to get everybody there.
I know I have gone on too long about this, so I will keep it short, but, sister is coming to see me, and we will be calling brother when she gets here. What ever I can do to keep our family the way it was meant to be, I will do.
This Texas trip is a huge, and, I do mean a huge, step in that direction. I will spoil sister with ever ounce of energy I have in me. This trip is an icon for us kids.

I am so envious of you....I've always wanted a sister. My dad had a daughter from a previous marriage. His first wife passed away...and she went to live with her mother's mother. Plus she was several years older than I was...so we were never close. Then when my mother passed away I went to my mothers side of the family. We never saw much of each other.
My cousins are kind of like sisters...but I still wish I had a close sister...I've always missed what I think that would be like.

I hope you two have lots and lots of fun next week...
Make lots of new memories together...

I hope you share her with us through pictures...
