Which would you choose? Lighting - pics...

I'm trying to choose a chandelier/pendent to go over my kitchen table (42'x60'). I'm confused on my style. Can you take a look at the pics and tell me which you would choose? There are five options.

Kitchen: Natural Cherry cabinets (shaker style), granite counter top(Venetian Gold), stainless appliances, brushed nickel knobs/pulls, white farmhouse sink, cream subway tile backsplash.

First off, I'm a function-over-form gal! So, keep this in mind as you read on... Since there is a possibility that you may stay longer than a couple of years, I would think about remodeling with what will please you...and, IMHO, I think a combination of function (#1) and form (#2) would please you best. Cabinets: Have you looked at IKEA cabinets? They are very affordable and many people here really like them and have found they're not too difficult to DIY the install. They're actually designed, I think, with DIY in mind. Even if you don't like the door styles, Scherr's has many different styles and now is able to drill for IKEA cabinets. Cost is a fraction of the cost of most stock & semi-custom cabinets. Style: I think if you use wood doors and a simple but classic door style (shaker or simple raised panel--similar to what you like in Harbor) you will find they will remain current enough for resale a few years down the road. Materials: Wood for doors. For Countertops, possibly granite (tiles, prefab, or a low-cost "pattern" like Uba Tuba) or a higher-end laminate would work in your area. Stay away from ceramic/porcelain tile. I think that's already dated and many people would look at it and think it would be hard to keep clean (I know I would) Appliances can be either stainless steel or white. I think both are acceptable in mid-to-high end kitchens. I'd probably stay away from black b/c they are more difficult to keep clean than SS, at least I think so (I have a black cooktop & it's the most difficult item in my kitchen to keep looking clean). For a sink I would stick with either stainless steel or Silgranit. I'd let cost & form drive that decision. (For SS, check out Galaxy Tool Supply's Ticor sinks w/the free sink grids (http://www.galaxytoolsupply.com/category_s/58.htm).) For faucet, I would go w/a pullout or pull down with or without a soap dispenser...I think a soap dispenser is a nice-to-have, but I don't think it will necessarily add to resale...but if you want one, go for it. As to finish, chrome is fine or go with a SS or brushed chrome or SS. I'm not sure if there's a price difference b/w brushed chrome and something like brushed nickel or oil rubbed bronze. Cabinet Hardware: Hardware doesn't have to be high-priced. Check out Home Depot or Lowes for lower priced but still very nice hardware. Look at finishes such as iron or pewter. Stay away from black if it's a painted finish...the paint will eventually chip on your most-used handles/pulls. Refrigerator: Your refrigerator will look best if it is cabinet depth and enclosed so it looks built-in. To achieve this look, install a 3/4" finished end panel on each side of the refrigerator, approx 27" deep--deep enough to cover the carcass (but not the door). Put a full-depth cabinet over the refrigerator to further make it look built in. If you cannot get a full-depth over-the-refrigerator cabinet, then get a regular...

Good morning. Our table will be a long farmhouse but not super rustic. It's not modern but casual. I like comfortable and welcoming feel but not shabby. We are casual people and casual entertainers. Does that help?? This house has a bit of more modern or transitional feel but I'd say it's not really contemporary. We're on a pretty tight budget so I'd like to stay under $400 for the dining room light. Sunny

ok, in my humble opinion, you have a lot of varied texture and finishes going on. I think between the polished fixture over the nook and the rustic fixtures over the island, your eye will not know where to land if you add another fixture to this space. I would not put two different pendants over the sink area, either keep all the 'kitchen' pendants the same or put to recessed lights over the sink. If it gets too busy it will end up looking like a mish/mosh of lighting. since you seem to have simple clean soft lines through most of your space I would not get carried away with too many lights. also as a side note the fixtures you have now probably give great lighting, the one you are replacing them with will not. Long and short: if you go with the heavy fixture from progress lighting I would nix the ones over the sink all together. but if you go with something a bit softer you could potentially mix it up a bit, as it is now with the two sizes.

kitchen pantry conundrum: which would you choose

You may feel disillusioned with your existing pantry because the access is narrow and the shelves are too deep. I imagine stuff gets lost in the back, and some things are a pain to reach. mdln's suggestion would make better use of your existing space. If you go with the pantry cabinets, how will you use the old pantry space?

I like option two best. I like option four too, but fear it might be too small for your table.

I like option 2 (I like funky lighting...) but not sure how it would coordinate without really seeing everything. I think lighting can really make a statement - so my 2 cents is to go with your gut if it's something you absolutely love and it works with everything else.

I do NOT like option 1... :) If you provide a photo of the space, this would be easier...

The one that resembles a schoolhouse light is nice... but what are the dimensions? They are typically too small for a table space.

It's hard to tell what the shades are made of from the pics and impossible to guess dimensions, which will really make a huge difference. I did notice some have chains. It's my experience that chains gather all sorts of dust and are a pain to clean. For that reason, I like pendants that hang from a long stem, like options 2 and 5.

There are people here who are far more knowledgeable than I who can advise you on how big your fixture should be based on the size of your table. And, since lighting has been called the jewelry in a room, you want to select a fixture that will make your heart sing. I hope you find it.

I like 5. It's classic modern and would go nicely with the shaker cabs. Plus, I personally am getting tired of schoolhouse pendants, although they are another classic.

All options are very nice, I'm loving your taste in lighting...... but I vote for 3! It's a tad more interesting than the more plain drum shades. I think it will compliment the wood tone and cream back splash. Not to mention, drum shades are all the rage right now but not in a very trendy sort of a way.

I LOVE #3.

I like a fixture that isn't flat on the bottom. #3 seems like it would connect with the table.

I kind of like #5. I don't think we're helping, are we? I agree that you should go with what you like best. And from the spread of votes, all of them are good choices!

I like #2 and second, #5. I think the more natural color will bring out the warmer tones from the Venetian Gold and at least on #2, I think it adds a sophistication that will look very nice!

we are doing shaker cabinets as well and hard edges on the granite. With all of those clean lines I am looking to add some softness and round-ness to the room. So I would go with 1 or 5. Lamps plus has a great pendant that looks a lot like #1 but it has a double shade (RH has one as well). Might be worth checking out, just to further drive you nuts :) Let us know what you choose.

I like #1 because it feels most like a chandelier. Is the stem brushed nickel? The shade gives a softer feel.
