Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Which style pendant would YOU choose ... looking to mix and match!

Hi Houzzers!

It's time for a pendant lighting change in the kitchen and I'm looking for advice for the 2 over the sink pendants. In a previous post, it was suggested that I convert these 2 pendants into can lights, but I plan to keep them as pendant lights for now.

I've already decided (not yet bought) to swap the 3 island pendants to the wooden drum / iron as shown in the picture and here: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Progress-Lighting-Gulliver-1-Light-Graphite-Drum-Pendant-with-Weathered-Gray-Wood-Accents-P500022-143/301219234

The others fixtures shown are the large brushed nickel bell pendant in the breakfast nook, the living room fan and the living room floor lamp. My goal is to tie these 3 separate, yet connected areas (nook, kitchen, and living room) together.

Should I look for brushed nickel, wood, wood / metal combo, iron, bell shaped, drum, globe? So many options and my goal is to get away from everything being so matchy matchy.

If I choose a style, I would say I lean towards modern transitional coastal with a touch of farmhouse? I honestly don't know how my style is classified.

Are you planning on switching them out to can lights later? If so, why not just do it now? It's just as easy to add can lights as it is to hang new pendant lights.

No, it’s an option though. I want to see if I like new pendants first.

kellienoelle, I had a similar realization when I was choosing pendants. I was looking at my kitchen as a self-contained room where all the metals were either stainless or pewter. I have an oil-rubbed bronze pendant over my dining table, in full view and spitting distance from where the pendants hang. I ended up getting black metal on my pendants (the ORB looks black) and it looks like it's supposed to be that way.

I'm kind of surprised that everyone is saying that the pendant clashes with the granite. Maybe I'm not getting something here? The granite looks very subdued in colour (greenish-black with white swirls on my monitor) and the movement has peaceful waves. Hmmm...maybe it's the movement of the granite clashing against the wildness of the pendants? That would make sense. GWers are usually on the ball about this type of thing. Okay, I think if you wanted to pop a bright punchy colour in the pendants, maybe you could do an amber colour but without the wavy pattern in them. Keep the pendants small though since you're doing 5 of them. Similar to this kitchen with purple pendants but you'd do them in amber: But honestly, any simple ORB pendant would work as well, especially if you have your heart set on the chandelier.

Help picking out new pendant lights in entrance way- what style?

Are we talking about the "entry" right at the front door? Or the space up on the step up area toward the stairs. Basically, though, it's the base of the table that will somewhat define the style. The more rustic, it becomes more "Mountain lodge" and the more refined it can go modern, contemporary or even more "transitional". They are also pretty expensive so before you invest money there, figure out how much you want to or can spend now, and then start selecting things you like and create an "Ideabook" here on Houzz. That will help you "define" which style direction you like. You can "like" a number of styles, but ultimately one will become more apparent than others.

ok, in my humble opinion, you have a lot of varied texture and finishes going on. I think between the polished fixture over the nook and the rustic fixtures over the island, your eye will not know where to land if you add another fixture to this space. I would not put two different pendants over the sink area, either keep all the 'kitchen' pendants the same or put to recessed lights over the sink. If it gets too busy it will end up looking like a mish/mosh of lighting. since you seem to have simple clean soft lines through most of your space I would not get carried away with too many lights. also as a side note the fixtures you have now probably give great lighting, the one you are replacing them with will not.

Long and short: if you go with the heavy fixture from progress lighting I would nix the ones over the sink all together. but if you go with something a bit softer you could potentially mix it up a bit, as it is now with the two sizes.

The pendant lights over the island and sink are making the space feel very busy in my opinion. I would have canned lights over these areas to keep it under control.
