Checking cars stopped on the roadside

It was my turn to take a snack to the old guys' coffee hour at church this morning, and on the road there was a pickup truck sitting, several miles from town.

I stopped, and the lady, driving an auto-parts delivery truck, and consulting her (non-edible) Blackberry, said that she was awaiting instructions from her boss.

I didn't come way empty-handed, though... as there was a beer can lying beside the car - 10 cents into my pocket.

I find that I'm stopping less frequently that I used to, though ... largely for that reason - that in many instances the reason for the stop is to talk on the phone.

It's illegal to be using a hand-held while driving ...

... and some of us say that it's almost as dangerous to be using a hands-free one, for one's mind is only minimally on what's happening around one on the road.

While I rarely drink, and almost never beer (saying that someone should pay me to drink that stuff), I pick up cans on the roadside, and a drinker friend who lacks a car and is more enthused about bringing the (heavier) bottles/cans home from the store than he is about returning the empties for credit, gives me some.

After the coffee hour, and washing the mugs, and en route to a meeting with my mutual fund advisor (and I haven't bought a mutual fund in 25 years), I took a hundred cans and bottles in - for $10.00.

Paid for some more cookies, it did.
