Molding, trim, doors - How far should we go?
Comments (3)Consistency is best, but there can be a certain consistency in non-uniformity. Are the stained windows within one room? Are the french doors? One option that you have that also has historical antecedents is a stained door with white trim, windows/ trim, and baseboards, and you could do this throughout the house for a certain amount of consistency. If the windows with the stained trim are all in one room, perhaps that entire room could have stained woodwork. Note that doing stain grade doors throughout the entire house can get relatively pricey. The key is to have a rather consistent plan or hierarchy and following it....See MoreHow far from the wall (or cabinet) to place my recessed LEDs?
Comments (7)How tall is your ceiling? What size recessed lights do you want to use and at what spacing? Those all factor in. Our old layout had the lights centered on the counter's edge. For our new layout, I moved them out to 1 ft from the counter's edge (3 ft from the wall). We are using 6" cans spaced 4ft apart and have 9 ft ceilings. We are using the Cree CR6 bulbs (Ecosmart brand). We don't seem to have shadow problems, but counters are not in until Tuesday. You may need to be flexible in placement. Once I tore into our ceiling, I found all sorts of obstacles (joists, pipes, vent ducts, and cross braces). That changed the layout a bit. I had to wedge one light into an area bordered on 3 sides by 2 pipes and a joist....See MoreWindow not quite centered--thoughts? How far should the BS go?
Comments (11)I wouldn't add a filler to the cabinets. I redid our kitchen earlier this year, shortened up the window to move the sink area. Had to use a fudge factor because of a similar situation. You're in a good spot, _if_ you haven't ordered the window yet. Since you will be adding framing for a shorter window, all you need is 2"x material on the one side. You will then have equal area between your cabinets & window, since 2"x is actually 1-1/2". You may want to reconsider the space and want a greater area, making the window even less wide. 1-1/2" trim isn't very wide, the smallest casing I've seen is 2-5/16". I used 3-1/2" casing and left a 3" space between the cabinets & casing. I suppose that's a personal thing tho....See MoreWall cabinet door pulls - how far from bottom edge?
Comments (12)My old cabinets had the pulls placed as in your 2nd photos. My newly installed cabinets have the pulls place as in your 1st photo - so the bottom of the pull (not the screw hole) is aligned with the top of the door's bottom rail (mounted on the stile). I could post a photo, but it's pretty much exactly like badergal's - same pull (Greenwich) in the 6" length on wood cabinets. FYI I'm making my own cabinets at a large local coop shop, and nearly everyone there installs pulls as shown in your 1st photo. That said, it's personal preference (which is often based on what you're used to seeing). I have never before seen the placement shown in the 3rd photo and it looks weird to me....See Moresumnerfan
