Follow up to bedding for DD with eczema

First of all, thank you to everyone who replied to my previous posting with suggestions and support for my 13-year-old DD who has eczema. I would like to make her bedding more comfortable for her and less irritating to her skin. I have decided to stick with Oeko-Tex certified organic bedding which I was able to find options through both Pottery Barn and Cuddledown. Not all Pottern Barn bedding is Oeko-Tex certified so I had to look through each pattern, but there were some options in both PB kid's and PB teen.

Stylewise, DD prefers PB teen (naturally). I'd really like some feedback on our choices. Idea is to minimize the dyes which would be closest to her skin (the sheets) while still allowing for a colorful top layer.

We are debating between a duvet or a quilt, but DD prefers this duvet in pool (second choice would be either blue or green dottie):

Do you think is will go with her room without repainting? I guess I'd probably have to change the valance (and I just made it a few months ago from her bedsheet material).

As for the insert, most duvet inserts seem to be either synthetic or down, though I did find this all cotton one at Cuddledown:

Would it be OK to buy the duvet from one place and the insert from another? It seems they come in different weights and I was thinking of getting the summer weight since DD runs on the hot side.

As for sheets I am leaning towards some plain white ones through Cuddledown since organic_smallhome highly recommended them as the most comfortable. Then in the winter, I'll either purchase her a heavier weight duvet insert or a cotton blanket.

As for the suggestions for lotions/creams, I did get her the CeraVe, which she tried, but said she prefers the Cetaphil cream which is slightly thicker. She just got invited to a good friend's B-day party (boys and girls) which is a pool party and she's not going to go as she is too self-conscious about her skin right now. It usually improves over the summer, but right now she has a lot of inflamation. I feel so bad. :( I wish it were me.....

I think the pool color will be fine with the walls, but I do agree that you will have to change the valance. Maybe you can get the twin sheet set in the pool and make window treatments from that? Otherwise, I would make plain white valances and edge with a series of stripes made from different widths of ribbon in both the pool and the orange. It will make the window treatment feel coordinated, but might be a fresher feel than the solid pool would be up there.

Don't know if this would work for her, but I would also consider switching the nightstand to the other side of the bed. It would move her away from the wall so it would give her better air circulation, and also the bed would be easier to make.

I also like the Pool Color in this Polka Dot Duvet Cover. I would also buy for warmth in the winter time an acceptable white quilt or cover for the end of the bed. I would buy white sheets that fold over the duvet cover and have the white pillow cases also add more white to go with the white cover at the end of the bed and your new valence. I would buy the matching shams. Then like Les says, you need to tie in the orange walls into the room. I love Les's valence idea a lot.

DD had a "3" suite freshman year at college. She had one great roommate, and one who was very dirty. Didn't wash her clothes, bedding or hair for days, sometimes weeks. Fastforward to this year, DD is rooming with her "clean" freshman roommate again. In the Spring she will be in an apartment in Italy with another college friend. Come fall, the three girls will have an apartment near campus. My DD is by no means a neatnik, but leaving dirty clothes around and not washing your hair for days will make a small college room smell. You can't change someone else's behavior. DD was beside herself, but felt uncomfortable talking to the third roommate about it. So, I mentioned to my DD early on last year that she might want to think of a way to handle this as it wasn't tolerable or fair to DD or her other roommate. No, DD didn't want to do that, etc. I then explained that the room will stink, and when your friends drop by to hang out in your room, they are not going to know it is "so and so" who stinks. Well two days after going back to school, DD had a very diplomatic talk with her 3rd roommate. I was so proud of the way she handled it. She didn't accuse or make judgments, just asked if the 3rd roommate could make more of an effort. Worked for a bit, but not long term. This girl would take her dirty clothes home in the hamper and return to school with them dirty, smelling worse than when they left on break! Not much us as moms can do except guide our DD's to address their problems without confrontation or accusations. Hope this works out for your DD!

shellfish: Oh, lovely room. That is right up my alley as well! I'm so envious of your space! I like the idea of the white coverlet which I may add in winter below the duvet. DD and I are still looking through the samples though lean towards a more saturated color like boxerpup's DS's room, then a lighter shade for the ceiling. Hope to narrow it down to a few paint samples to test on the walls. DD has little patience with me as I wanted to show her the inspiration pics. I'd rather she just pick a look she likes and let me narrow down the paint colors to 2-3 that match the one in a picture. That has always been my difficulty in doing her room--she just focuses on one aspect, the bedding, WTs or paint and not how they all look together in her room, with her floor and lighting. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done in terms of room layout at present and it's not possible to remove just the head and footboard. It's a captain's storage bed with four drawers which she uses for her clothes. In another year my DS will most likely go away to college then I think I will let her move into his room which is a smidge larger and then we can do something similar to paintergirl's rendition. In which case I'll be repainting both rooms in a year's time. If it wasn't so hideous right now, I'd just wait another year, but she and I both hate it and the bedding and WTs can simply move to the other room when the time comes. I lvoe the paint color in the living room photo above and think DD would agree to that since it's so vivid. That B&W accents really seem to mitigate the intense shade as I'd hoped it would. Does anyone know what color that is?

MSN news had a slide show this morning of what might trigger psoriasis: blood-pressure medications !! It's the binder/filler ingredients in pills, such as magnesium stearate which is the culprit. With my 3-years hand rash I finally found the culprit besides my hard-well water: It's magnesium stearate coating on pills, also a component in Nature-Made magnesium pills, and a component in Nature-Made vitamin D tablets. Olychick. You would think carrying the inhalers wouldn't be too strenuous a task I have a meeting at the school next week about Chips rescue inhaler. Good.....gives me time to have the doctors draft letters which I must have. When I'm done Chip will have access to his rescue within a arms length away...his pocket hopefully. Sunscreen was Coppertone Baby Aerosol. AND the teacher was not allowed to put sunscreen on any child. There were 5 kids in this group as they are split up in smaller groups. 3 children were treated for itchy rash the following day with Chip being one of them. At first when the school told me this I thought than surely it was caused from something else but none of the children from the other groups got a rash as far as the school knows. I spoke with the ped doctor today. He returned my call within a hour. We spoke about doing a test with the sunscreen...he said i can't tell you to do it but if it was my kid I would want to know if the sunscreen caused it and I'd put a small pea sized amount between the shoulder blades where the child won't scratch it open. He said if I decide to do this wait until school is over and do it on a Monday so he will be in the office. So the teacher wasn't even permitted to put sunscreen on the kids. But I know the teacher was only trying to be helpful . Bet she won't do it again. So what do you all think considering 3 out of 5 kids got a rash?

Les: Thanks for the suggestions about the valance. Using the sheet fabric is how I made the previous one, though I like your idea of doing white with orange and pool striping. Would you suggest horizontal or vertical striping? Assume you mean I should try to match material for the striping to these colors--what type of materal/notion do you think would work for the stripes? A ribbon or tape? This route I could get a ready made valance. As for room layout, my DD has the smallest room in the house--something like only 9x10 with one wall taken up with a closet and door return, another with the window and another short wall where the door is. There is really only room for the bed, nightstand and a desk/hutch. Not even space for a dresser so she has a closet organizer with drawers plus drawers in her captain's bed. I guess the layout is easy because there is no other way things will fit.

lynn: I love your layered bedding suggestions! I think some type of white coverlet which she could use on top or under the duvet is an excellent idea. DD is a bit of a slob, though, and her sheets get scrutched up at the base or worse yet, on the floor.

organic_smallhome, if you're reading this, or anyone else with experience dealing with skin issues, I'd love some additional feedback before placing my order.
