OK, I'll talk potty-mouthed with ya!! LOL!! We have an Eljer in our downstairs bathroom(this one gets the most use)and I absolutely HATE it!! It's supposed to be a water conserving potty, which is great, but it doesn't flush the best. Not that there is anything wrong with it's flushing capabilities, but if you, well you know, go too much, it tends to get plugged up!! I think my potty needs a laxative..if you get my drift!!

I can't tell ya what the one upstairs is without running up there to see. Can check later and report back, but it's been in our house for probably close to 20 years and no problems whatsoever with it.

Can't tell you anything about the two that you mentioned, just reporting what our experience has been with the ones we have.

Funny, I just sent the following to my daughter, who is building a house:

I bought two new ones during the remodel. Upstairs is a Kohler--the rather low-priced model that Lowe's has by the thousand in its aisle. Might be called Wellworth, I'm not sure. I love it. Flushes very neatly and reliably. If I were doing it over I might get a "comfort height" model (a little higher than the one I have).

Downstairs I have a Toto. Everybody raves about Toto. Everybody except me, that is. Maybe it's because I bought a low-end Toto (same price as the Kohler), but I would never buy another. I don't like the way it flushes, churning everything up, and until I figured out how to fix it (the dealer was no help), it used to splash me in the leg if I didn't close the lid in time. Ugh.

The Roche saleswoman actually said, "Your friends will be so impressed that you got a Toto!" Yeah, right.

Patsy has a new American Standard Champion that she loves, and Linda loves her Kohler Memoir, which is rather nice looking.
So that's my toilet report. :-)

About 3 months ago, we bought a Kohler "Santa Rosa" model.
Seat is comfort height, uses 1/2 the water to flush (1.6 gal) and the elongated seat (which took a little getting used to).
Boy...when you flush this baby...it's like a jet taking off. Also, with the water flushing that fast, it's basically self-cleaning.

I like it..no problems at all.

It's a no-go for the Toto here too! Ick, yeck, useless piece of **** LOL. Don't waste your money. American Standard Champion flushes clean, does what it's supposed to, and doesn't need a user with a Phd to install, or UNINSTALL!

I'm just flushed with the success of this new info! LOL

...Alisande, do you remember which Toto model you have? Do you think it could be a water line problem? I know they have to be plumbed "differently," and want to avoid such problems myself.

I had one plumber ask "What's a Toto?" Another, in a rather high-toned voice asked, "How did you hear about a Toto?" His bid was not even considered.

Monica...Do you know if it's the "Class Five" flush, or the "Ingenium" flush on the Santa Rosa? The Kathryn I'm considering has the "Ingenium." The Toto I'm considering has the Ultra-Max flush, which is similar to Kohler's "Class Five."

That little house we had long ago in the far back of the property is looking better and better!

CountryCottageKlutz...We must have been posting at the same time. Thank you for your Toto info, too. I know they're great in theory, but I don't think I could get one properly installed here either. The whole idea of a new toilet is to avoid problems, not cause them.

I do love the name though. I can just hear the little niece, "I have to tee-tee in the Toto."

On the Santa Rosa, yes...the "Ingenium" flush.

We bought it at Home Depot.

Regardless of what brand, I would get the taller type. I have it in my new bathroom, and love it. Have the old, now-you-squat kind upstairs, and have to use that at night. Makes me almost want to trot downstairs to the other one!

Caroline, apparently the issue here was the floor was 1/16th of an inch out of plumb.. threw the whole toilet out of whack, and I threw an even bigger fit at having the backs of my legs washed every time I had to flush!

We just bought an American Standard Cadet 3. It is very reliable, but the water doesn't really swirl, so sometimes you have to flush twice to "clean" the bowl. The best part for us was the fact that the model with the round bowl takes very little space, and our bathroom is quite narrow and crowded.

Mine is a Gerber. It's got to be the cheapest out there, or it wouldn't have been put in my house by the contractor I had. It is a water saving (?) one. I don't think it saves any water at all, because sometimes takes 2 or 3 flushes to get the job done. I think I may invest in a better one.

I'm gonna guess it's a Carusoe, only because I looked at the Toto website and that's the only name that looks familiar to me. Also, it looks similar. When I said "everybody raves about Toto" I was referring to the people on the Bathroom Forum at the time I was shopping for toilets.

I don't know about the water line, although I can tell you we had a toilet in that spot for many years before I bought this one.

I love the way the Kohler flush makes the contents disappear neatly and quickly.

Oh, and I neglected to mention that I've had to use a plunger on the Toto a few times recently. Grrr........

Caroline - I also vote for the 'comfort height' style. You can also check on the Bathroom Forum - someone there just asked about the different Toto toilets.

American Crane has a comfort height elongated bowl combined with a "ample butt" bowl. This just means it is taller, longer and 2" wider. I have 2 of them and they flush extremely well. I got them at either HD or Lowe's. (OK as my butt spread, my brain shrank.)

It's settled; I think I made the right decision.

I'm getting the Kohler Kathryn, in the ADA Comfort Height. It has a "Compact Elongated" bowl which, I learned, is a normal elongated bowl, but the tank is taller and more narrow (measured out from the wall) so the entire toilet takes up about 3 inches less length out from the wall. (Is that as clear as mud?)

I especially like the hidden trapway. The lower sides are smooth; you don't have the curves and curls to catch dust and dog hair.

Once I choose a vanity, I can decide on either the under-mounted sink, or the self-rimming one.

If I were getting a new toilet I would consider a wall-mounted type. Have you thought about that? So much easier to clean around the outside, with no base on the floor.

I've only seen pictures of them, and there are probably reasons why they wouldn't work with older plumbing, but they look nice and surely would help with the cleaning.

If I were getting a new toilet, I'd consider a double flush one - I've not priced them but we used them in a hotel and they were great - the flush mechanism is in two pieces and you use one side for liquids and the other(greater flush) for solids (to put it politely) LOL

I have the eljer air assist toilet, and it has never worked correct, besides that it scares people. My brother swears by his toto. he has bought them for all 3 of his bathrooms. If it was up to me, I'd go with Kohler. Kathy

I love our Toto, Drake elongated model. Everything goes down in one quick flush (and it doesn't splash on us).

I'm with Jaybird. American Standard Cadet 3. I like it very much. Hated the thing that came with the house...always had to flush 3 times. This one is higher and more comfortable.

i'm with buzzard...we bought the first for my mother (to avoid a potty riser, yuck) and liked it so much we replaced the other toilet with the taller one. i hate going to my kids house, now...

in fact, the salesman said more home owners are buying them, just because...

I believe that all of ours are Kohlers.

We have a low flush Toto and would not buy another one. The flush handle and the plastic pads that keep the seat from hitting the toilet all broke. The parts have to be ordered and of course, are expensive compared to the same items for other brands.

Here's a southern California company, Acorn Engineering, that manufactures prison and industrial toilets. I especially like the 'Suicide Resistant Toilet'. They have some very interesting items. Linda

I guess we got lucky then because we have the Eljer,and it works very well.Push the handle down and it does a great hearty SWOOSH and everything is gone.Never a need to do a second flush.

We got ours in 1996 when we remodeled,and we also got the taller one with the elongated seat.Maybe they made them better back then.

While we were stationed in California I worked at a large jail facility for seven years. Those are the very "suicide resistant" toilet/sink combinations we had in the cells there. Nasty things.

It's really sad that I momentarily considered putting one of these dual-duty plumbing fixtures in the tiny area I'm designating for the half bath. Thankfully good sense kicked in.

I don't want to air family laundry, but I have a couple of distant family members that would have used similar fixtures at certain times in their past lives. What if they came for a visit and had a flash-back reaction to the plumbing? LOL

We recently needed to replace a toilet so I used Consumer's Reports to pick one. We got the American Standard Champion and I just love it. Lowe's carries it, and the matching seat. I will only buy toilets with elongated bowls, those little round ones are so uncomfortable, especially for men, I think. It flushes with very little water, lots of power and great reliability.

Caroline. I like the one you selected. I'm jotting it down because we have one small bathroom left to remodel and I like the idea that is takes up 3 inches less floor space and I love the hidden trap design. Why would anyone want to see the outline of the trap and then have to clean it too?

My DD has a toto at her cottage in Door County, WI. Door County is all granite and you can't have a septic. They have holding tanks and you have to have ALL your water waste trucked out. They need a toto to keep water use down, having it hauled is quite $$$. She doesn't like the toto, but it is a necessity.
When we redo our main bath in a year or two I want an elongated seat AND I agree with Mcmann, why have those extra areas to clean along the trap lines? Ridiculous!
Comfort height? I'll have to check into that.

We replaced two 25 year old Kohlers with Toto Ultimate 1 piece, elongated bowl.
They both work great. The old toilets sometimes clogged, not these. We have had one for about 4 years and the other for about 4 1/2 years.
The contractor installed one and TG installed the other, neither seemed to require special skill or handling - what is the issue at your house?

Not sure what name this one carries, but I think that it has a merry-go-round for a cousin.

Seems to swirl round and round, then settle.

Need to re-flush.

Have run into some others with similar problems.

As I've sometimes said ... it's a poor day that one doesn't learn something.

I think that I'll forebear telling my daughter that some toilets carry her name, though!
