can i mix travertine and stainless steel tiles in backsplash?
Comments (15)Mikewood, our granite is called Golden Crystal. I don't have photos of our backsplash installed, but was inspired by Kellienoelle's (link attached to her reveal post). It's Crossville RetroActive in empress white- unpolished (so no sheen, a very matte finish), in the longer rectangular shape to set it apart from traditional subway. It's also not a stark white, but almost an antique white, even a tad gray in some light, both coordinate with our counter. My DH too was convinced we needed travertine because he "liked the way it looks." And he was leery of a white tile in subway shape for fear of it seeming like a bathroom. I love travertine, but not with our granite. It sometimes takes a lot of convincing to get someone out of their preconceived notions. While the backsplash may be considered boring by some, it offsets our beautiful granite and cabinets perfectly. It's the perfect backdrop, and our granite's the star. Comments (37)Is there white in granite counter tops? I think I see some white there, but it might be a reflection. Like other posters said, two types of tile and a patterned countertop is too busy, IMO. I think the lantern style by itself is still too busy with that counter top. Is that the color scheme of your house - white, gold, and an accent color? The reason I ask is because in a small house (like mine), I like to have one color scheme for the whole house, and just vary what color goes where in each area. So if your scheme is almond, gold, and an accent (like red or rust), then almond should be the big color expanse in your kitchen, too. (I think that using white or off white for all trim, though, is the norm and is fine.) I think if you decide what you want your focal point to be, that will help. Do you want the focal point to be the countertop? Or the backsplash? You can always just paint the backsplash (using even your accent color), if the wall is in good shape. You can always tile later. But I think doing anything fancy on the BS with that gorgeous tile will take away from the countertop. And unless you have white throughout your townhome, I don't think white goes very well with the color of your countertop. Gold is a warm color, while white tile is a cool color. UNLESS there is white in that countertop, and white is one of your decor colors. I can't tell. There are whites that are warmer white, though. I don't know if tiles come in warmer whites, but maybe so. Not as dark as cream....still white, but white with a yellow undertone that makes it a warm white. I can't tell the "cream" tiles at the bottom in your photo. Are they all four of those tiles? Two on the left look different than the two on the right. So I'm not sure what's what with those four tiles....See MoreMixing porcelain tile with travertine/limestone trim on backsplash?
Comments (2)Nothing makes faux look "faux-er" than abutting it to real. You can try it, but I doubt it will give you the look you want. By the way, I think it's a great decision to avoid limestone for color issues. You never know what your going to get or how it will look in your space till its in....See MoreBacksplash help: mixed neutrals subway tile?
Comments (139)I would expect that Calacatta as a field tile would be too expensive for this kitchen. Thanks for getting those mosaics off their website, rebunky. I like the stick mosaic but I'd probably use something more like the 1 x 3 brick. I love squares but I know that's a dated look. The wave tile is dimensional. There's also a hexagon and a mini herringbone mosaic. I'm never quite sure what you can get in which finish from Encore. Confusing website. I'll think about adding color in green and/or red if I do a mosaic. If I was able to get Encore, which would probably involve going to Seattle for an overnighter, I may be able to get a field tile in the Bravo line. Thanks, guys. Next step is getting out to some tile stores....See Moreoldbat2be
