Has eBay Stopped Showing the High Bidder's ID?

I've been looking around on eBay today (fun thing to do when you're off from work!*S*) and noticed on the auctions I was looking at that instead of it showing the high bidders ID, it's things like e***e or v***e! What's up with that?

I was just noticing that too...some changes going on on there!

Yes, I think that stops people that have similar items to sell from contacting the people bidding. That is a good change, some of the other changes are not so good IMO. The sellers not being able to leave negative or neutral feedback for buyers is the worst.

Hello Laura How was the storm? Hopefully not so bad. Here in CA they almost don't exist lol. Hopfuly no damage to your garden i know plumerias don't like wind. Btw I too have two verigated plumerias that I purchased at the avocado festival this year at La Habra Heights here in CA from a guy that brought cuttings from his trip to Thailand and grafted them here they seem to be doing great. I also bought 4 more plumerias from him that I can't wait to see blooms so far one of the dark pinks I got bloomed and it was great and Kimo is about to bloom. I read somewhere that the verigated variety don't bloom that often? Any ways back to Adeniums I wanted to ask a big favor if your willing. To please ask your friend if she did buy some double flowering adeniums from anyamanee if they did flower double not just single that's what I'm most interested on. I know that the color just depends on the growing conditions but I want to know if she did buy doubles if they all did bloom double. I would really appreciate your help. Thanks

I've been buying on eBay and exclusively using PayPal for many, many years. Things may have changed with PayPal in the ensuing years, but when I signed up you put in a credit card number, and all of your payments were against the credit card. There was a PayPal limit of $2,000 that could be charged against the card. After that, if you still wanted to use PayPal you had to give them your checking account number. PayPal then made three random deposits in very tiny amounts (like anywhere from five cents to a dollar); and those deposits were made on different days. You then had to key into PayPal the dates and amounts of the deposits. This verified to them that the account was, indeed, your own account. (And you got to keep whatever amounts they deposited into your checking account.) After that you have the option of paying for an auction by putting it against your credit card or by a cash transfer from your checking account. I only pay for things with a cash transfer if it is $15 or less (including shipping). But if it's a larger amount, or if the seller is relatively new, I'll put it against my credit card because I like the protection that a credit card payment affords -- if an item doesn't show up, or if it is substantially different than what was advertised, I can notify my CC company and cancel payment. I like to pay for my winnings as soon as possible. But, I never, ever, make the payment until the notice shows up in my Inbox that I've won the auction.

eBay Issues Anyone?

Several times I've been beat out at auctions, and I think it's the sniping software that does it. I don't have that type of software and it annoys me (BIGTIME!) when I get beat out of an auction by someone using it. I'm one that if I really want an item, I'll sit at the computer when it's close to the ending. I know I'm being sniped when I continually up my bid and keep being outbid immediately, especially :02 from the end of the auction. If anything frustrates me about eBay these days, it's that software. I'm sure that for those that use this software, it's a blessing - particularly for auctions that end in the wee hours of the morning. But for me, constantly on the losing end, it's not. I'd like to see them do away with it myself. When I sell, I rarely use a tracking service, I ship mostly usps priority. When I ship with USPS I usually pay the 65 cents to have the web tracking put on it. For the cost, it's a decent service. As a seller, you are waiting for basically two things. One, that the buyer received the item in a timely fashion. Unless you keep nudging them via email, you don't know.** Two, that they are satisfied, happy, or at least, know they got what they bid on. Again, you only get this through feedback. As a buyer, you are doing feedback on how speedily your seller got your item to you, and on whether or not that item was as described. To my mind, the tranaction is not complete until the item has been received by buyer and the buyer is either satisfied, or we have taken care of whatever issue is in the works. How you handle the 'transaction gone wrong' is a definite determination of what feedback is deserved, and again, that determination is made when both parties see the deal as done. Thanks for posting your view. I'm pretty much a realistic buyer with shipping. I pay attention to where the item is coming from and know that something on the West coast takes a long time to ship. If something gets here in a week I'm happy :) I know that not everyone thinks like this, so I can see where you are coming from. As a buyer, I still feel that the seller should give me feedback 1st since I bought the item & paid on time. If sellers are fearful of negative feedback, it can always be retracted. I agree. They should make sure it becomes the rule for sellers AND buyers. If you're going to claim it's broken, you should have to send pictures to PROVE it's broken before you get a refund for the buyer, and before you can cancel a transaction if you're the seller. I agree and think it's a great idea. With the Barbie we got, I took pictures of everything and uploaded them, sent a link to the seller; he could care less; stopped communicating with us. We even tried contacting ebay & fair trade. On an item that cost over $250, it hurt pretty bad to have to make the decision to not send it back to the seller & tie our money up. I've also been seeing cases where the buyer claims the item was sent to the wrong address. Over the years, I've have a number of buyers who wrote demanding a refund and/or another item. I've even ran across one "gentleman" who was using his ex girlfriend's ebay account, -and her checks- to purchase "gifts" for his "sister" halfway across the country. Uh huh. He was livid when the item was delivered to the ex-girlfriends (the address listed on the account -and- the checks), and I refused to send him another, but oh well. Even though he changed the "mail to" address a couple of days after the item was delivered (apparently when he realized he wasn't getting it), Ebay backed me up on that one, no problem. I hope she changed her passwords!

It was a mistake, yes, but probably one ebay will not accept -- Let's put it this way, if the listings each went up $50 would she keep them listed? If yes, then it was not a mistake that she should cancel. An legitimate mistake would be cancelled either way - the amount the listing would sell for would not really matter. But if she is only cancelling them because she did not make enough to cover shipping (and forgot to calculate that in) I highly doubt that is an excusable mistake. I'd seriously check with ebay rules or ask on the boards over there. I'm not trying to be mean -- but I'm not going to tell you want you want to hear either. I seriously think she could get in trouble. And, sorry to be so blunt, but "forgetting" you'll have to pay shipping charges is not a normal thing for people when first selling on ebay. That's about the first thing you look into when beginning to sell. If she's that uneducated about ebay; she should not be selling on ebay until she really understands what she is doing. It's just not fair to the buyers. Again, sorry it's not what you want to hear... but I really think she's wrong to cancel them. Again, ask on the ebay boards or even ask the ebay help center and see what they say about her mistake. She's not being fair to the buyers. I had to eat money because I didn't know how to package stuff well and a package got damaged in the rain -- everyone has to accept and learn by their mistakes.

This is what Ebay says: "To help keep the eBay community safe, enhance bidder privacy, and protect our members from fraudulent emails, eBay has changed how User IDs display on the bid history page. Only you and the seller of the item can view your User ID, all other members will see anonymous user IDs, such as x***y."

What got me is that AFTER the auction is over, I -can- see the id of the person who won.

I have never done EBay, but I have nothing against it but I have seen they are doing some major changes. Maybe this is done to protect both buyer and seller. Also I understand the fees have been changed.

"The sellers not being able to leave negative or neutral feedback for buyers is the worst."

I've never sold anything on eBay (but I certainly have bought an awful lot of stuff!), so I'm curious... why is it so awful for a seller not to be able to leave negative feedback? About the only legitimate reason that I can think of to leave neg feedback for a buyer would be if the buyer doesn't pay, and I think you can still leave a negative for that (or some sort of nonpaying bidder remark).

But if the eBay'er with the highest bid pays like they're supposed to, why would you need to leave negative feedback?

As a buyer, I'm currently wrestling with whether or not I want to leave negative, perhaps neutral, feedback for a seller, from whom I've won two auctions.

The first auction included a charge for shipping & handling; and the shipping was for USPS Priority Mail. Now, I know exactly how much it costs to ship Priority Mail for what I bought, and the seller charged about twice that amount. But, I knew in advance how much they were adding for S&H, and I factored that in when I placed my bid for the highest amount I was willing to pay.

I paid through PayPal within minutes of the auction ending. Nearly two weeks later I still hadn't received the item but I then received one of those e-mail notices that the seller had generated a shipping label via PayPal.

Well, waaaaaaay down at the bottom of the auction page the seller had put something to the effect of "we usually ship within 10 business days of receiving payment." And, yeah, that shipping label had been generated on the 10th business day.

I left positive feedback, praising the quality of the item. I didn't say anything at all about the shipping or timeline. I gave the seller the benefit of the doubt and figured that Life got in the way and they couldn't get to the post office any sooner than they did.

Then I bid on, and won, another of this seller's auctions. Again, I was charged about double for USPS Priority Mail. And, again, after 10 business days I got an e-mail that the seller had generated a shipping label. (And this auction page didn't have the disclaimer that they usually ship within 10 business days...)

USPS Priority Mail is only supposed to take 2-3 days. Well, the seller generated the label on the 10th business day, but they didn't actually ship the item for another three days!!

So, I'm happy enough with the item, but there is NO EXCUSE IN THE WORLD for charging double for Priority Shipping and then sending the item so the buyer receives it after it would have been received if it had been shipped Parcel Post!

But if the eBay'er with the highest bid pays like they're supposed to, why would you need to leave negative feedback?

I wouldn't, but a buyer may not pay at all which wastes my time, and yes, I can file a dispute ... wait the 10 days and then he may get a strike, but unless he gets 3 in a certain time period it doesn't mean squat. I cannot leave a remark that warns other sellers unless I leave it as a false positive (which I have heard will get buyers in trouble for doing). A buyer may take his sweet time paying ... what is reasonable? 2 weeks, a month? What if the buyer is unhappy. It would be nice to be contacted first to give the seller a chance to make it right... but a lot of buyers won't bother. They'll just leave a negative or neutral remark. There will also be the retaliatory negatives ... no longer for a seller leaving a negative ... but for even opening a dispute (just happened to me right before the new rules took effect).

Overcharging shipping is a problem. Now that buyers can rate the seller according to stars on several things, you can leave a one star (or higher) in the shipping and shipping time spaces. It won't hurt his feedback, but others will see that he overcharges and ships slowly.
