Buyer Beware on E-Bay. .

The following is a e-mail I got from my daugher yesterday. I never thought of something like this happening on E-Bay. She thought she bought some Chanel sunglasses but as it turns out someone had spoofed into another person's E-Bay account, listed hundreds of pairs of Chanel sunglasses, when you buy them, you pay instantly with Pay Pal then when she checked the items she had bought, they did not show up but her Pay Pal had paid for them. At the moment she is out 42.00. She has filled out a complaing with Pay Pay so time will tell what they will do. .but if I can copy and paste her e-mail here is what happened to her. It certainly will make me think twice before buying anything off of E-Bay again. .Debbie

Just wanted to let you know I got scammed BIG TIME on Ebay. Bought a pair of

Chanel glasses that I will never see!! It is not ebay's problem evidently since

an "unauthorized" person sold them or whatever on someone else's account. Just

wanted you all to know this can happen to you! Soooo frustrating!

I bought the glasses with the buy it now option and proceeded to paypal and

checked out. Then the glasses were not in myebay under items I "won." I knew

something was wrong. Got the email confirmation from paypal that they were

paid for. Got an email confirmation from ebay that I won the glasses and

clicked on it and it says "sorry this listing is invalid and has been cancelled

by ebay."

So basically, I paid for them but will never see them. Annnnd I can't leave

negative feedback, because technically I never bought them according to ebay

since they cancelled it. go figure....

So much for my Happy Valentine's Day from Chad!! haha

Yes, I've heard of this happening before. My son bought an 800.00 computer and the seller kept saying "it's in the mail, here's the tracking number" which indeed showed it enroute. When it arrived, it was a tiny package with a computer part in it. He reported it but the seller had already been pulled due to other reporting. He didn't use paypal so he had no recourse. You have to have a Paypal buyer credit account which is like a credit card. You use that to pay and, if something like this arises, you get your full refund. I always use that now.
Tell your daughter to get one if she plans on using Ebay. I ever bought two cars with the peace of mind that I had a recourse if needed. Sorry to hear about her dilemma. Ebay owns Paypal and both are pretty secure sites but a criminal mind is a dangerous thing.

If her Paypal account is backed by a credit card. she can send this information to them and get her money back.
Sad, but this can happen to the best of us.

For anyone out there still tempted to bid on these supposed "seeds" of "rare" Anthurium, I'd like to share with you my exchange of email with the seller. But first, a bit of background. There is at least one plant on the list of plants being offered that is so rare many have been searching for it for almost 20 years! The photo used was stolen (along with many others) from the International Aroid Society website. This seller is offering 5 "seeds" for about $2 as an opening bid! I'm not going to tell you which plant, but if you've followed my by website you can figure it out. The plant was once on the cover of the International Aroid Society journal and many of us have been trying to find it for years! A botanist is in South America right now looking for the specimen since new information recently became available. And this seller supposedly has seeds of this very rare Anthurium for $2.00??? The seller has now admitted they don't even have any of the seeds offered! Here is the email exchange: I asked via eBay email: "I noticed you illegally stole the photo of this plant and many others from the International Aroid Society website. Your infraction has been reported to the officers of the society. I'm curious, do you even know this species is extremely rare? Do you know that there is not a botanical garden in the Unites States that even has one? Do you have this plant? Where did you possibly get seeds of a plant this rare? Makes me wonder? Are you even legitimate? I think I'll report this to eBay as well. Right now!" And the seller responded: "Hi, Actually the seeds are at US. I am just a trader not a botanic expert. I buy several seeds through internet and again sell them. The photos and descriptions were sent by the seller. I'm aware of the photos but the seller says that we are not selling mother plants just seeds so the photos are for just to give an idea of the plant, what the buyer should expect from the seeds. Thank you for your interest. Kind Regards, ladybotany" Some of this sellers offerings are now up into the hundreds of dollars for 5 "seeds"! Seeds that are likely nothing more than "make believe". Seeds the seller admits they don't even have! So, is anyone foolish enough to bid on seeds the seller admits they don't have? Seeds, some of which are so rare botanical gardens can't get them? From a seller who admits they know nothing about Anthurium species but still calls themselves "ladybotany"? From a seller who will steal photographs in order to make the sale of "seeds" from plants they don't even possess? From a seller that uses a Hotmail address to cover their tracks? From a seller who is not even charging enough in postage to safely pack and ship any seeds at all? From a seller whose only feedback is from things they've purchased, never sold?? If you are still willing to bid on any of these "seeds", I've got a bridge in New York City I'll sell you cheap! You could make a fortune charging tolls to cross that bridge! This smells exactly like a cleverly disguised scam! And the seller didn't even do enough homework to be clever! This offering is obviously aimed at the people of Indonesia who are willing to pay very high prices for Anthurium plants and seeds. What was it P.T. Barnham supposedly said about a "sucker born every minute"? This one is looking for a bunch of suckers. And they will probably find them unless eBay stops this entire mess! Since eBay is aware of the problem and eBay owns Paypal... I'd guess she will have no problem getting her money back.

It is always a good idea to look at what your seller has been selling and then to look at what they have up for bids at the moment. The scammers will take over someone's 100% feedback account and then list lots of high dollar items. So someone that has been selling romance novels and hair bows that suddenly lists lots of wide screen TVs is someone not to buy from.

I've been buying on eBay and exclusively using PayPal for many, many years. Things may have changed with PayPal in the ensuing years, but when I signed up you put in a credit card number, and all of your payments were against the credit card. There was a PayPal limit of $2,000 that could be charged against the card. After that, if you still wanted to use PayPal you had to give them your checking account number. PayPal then made three random deposits in very tiny amounts (like anywhere from five cents to a dollar); and those deposits were made on different days. You then had to key into PayPal the dates and amounts of the deposits. This verified to them that the account was, indeed, your own account. (And you got to keep whatever amounts they deposited into your checking account.) After that you have the option of paying for an auction by putting it against your credit card or by a cash transfer from your checking account.

I only pay for things with a cash transfer if it is $15 or less (including shipping). But if it's a larger amount, or if the seller is relatively new, I'll put it against my credit card because I like the protection that a credit card payment affords -- if an item doesn't show up, or if it is substantially different than what was advertised, I can notify my CC company and cancel payment.

I like to pay for my winnings as soon as possible. But, I never, ever, make the payment until the notice shows up in my Inbox that I've won the auction.

Buyer Beware on E-Bay. .
