Before and After of laundry room

I started painting the cabinets in my laundry room before I started on the kitchen. I wanted to make sure that I knew what I was doing. The before pictures are horrible. The laundry room is in a mess. Excuse the mess.

We moved the pantry over because we could not get the outside door open because of my huge washer and dryer. I really wanted the outside door so that the kids could come in from the pool instead of coming in on my hardwood floors. Hubby still has to put in baseboard. I was happy though because I got to paint behind the washer and dryer.

I just started on the kitchen today. I will post pictures when I am done.

wow, looks GREAT!

what'd you think of the paint process? we're going to do the same. start with the laundry room, and work to the kitchen cabs :)

Boy you are a PRO ! Looks great. I know what you mean about the pool and hardwoods. That is where everyone has to come in at our house also. We have old heart pine and so far it looks fine...wipe your feet I holler all the time :) Can hardly wait to see the kitchen . You are so good. c

Thanks!! I did prime!! My goal was to make it look as if the cabinets came white, and not "hey...I painted them and you can tell!!!" My How-To: 1) Took down the cabinets and sanded with a black & decker mouse sander 80 grit. 2) Vac all the sandings (very important!!) 3) Primed with SW Prep Rige Pro Block Primer 4) Sanded again with a 220 grit 5) Vac 6) Primed again 7) Sanded AGAIN with 220 8) Vac 9) Applied 2 coats SW Pro Classic Alabaster (its self-leveling so it helps for a smoother cleaner finish) Dry for a few days then added hardware I also found I had a small gap along the sides where the cabinets met the wall and ceiling. So I ended up sealing it with latex caulk. A very easy step, yet make a HUGE difference, in my opinion.

hey_j - For the wall color I mentioned it was very close to BM's Mexican Tile it is because I actually don't know the name of the paint color. I went to the Habitat for Humanity Store which sells used household renovation items (perhaps some of you have one in your community). Anyways I went to this store as I wanted some antique style door handles (which I found for $1.00 each!) and while I was there I found this can of paint for $8.00 - guess it was a mistint from some store that was donated to Habitat and I just had to jump on it and turned out great. I went through my BM swatches and found it to be very close to BM Mexican Tile. Originally I painted the cabinets Desert Tan by BM and it looked HORRIFIC! LOL so I had to repaint them all over again YIKES! But it was totally worth it as the Tahoe color is so soothing I love it. What is so great about my husband making these cabinets is that it was his first time making anything like it and I think he did a wonderful job. Also by doing this we did it at a fraction of the cost and it has all the little personal touches from him - the little heart on the shelf valance etc etc. Mustang - I love the light fixture too. It was left here by the previous owners who are my husbands parents. They had this light hanging by a chain link about the stairs and the scale was all wrong so we removed the chain link - put it in a smaller area flush to the ceiling and it is just perfect now. I am thinking the fixture is about 30+ years old and has a beautiful 'antiquey' feel to it.

Reader, the prints in the bathroom are called Serengeti I and II by Tandi Venter. The artist is from South Africa I believe. DH and I had the opportunity to go on a safari in SA with our church group a few years ago, and although these are just common art posters, they make me think of our personal trip. I bought the prints on eBay and made the frames out of door casing trim. They are fantastic posters, but the odd size made buying stock frames impossible (and custom was more than I wanted to spend ;-) Lynn, thanks so much for the kind words. I'm glad you commented on the cabinet color; I haven't seen many painted to blend with the walls, so I wasn't sure of the reception it would get. Those original cabinets are extremely sturdy and well built but didn't have anything going for them in the looks department. I wanted to downplay their appearance and size but maximize their function. It didn't hurt that using all one color allowed me to just spray on the paint willy-nilly, either!

Thanks for your comments! It was amazing how long it took! @immcnitt - I've done that, LOL! At least before retiring. . . @Michelle - you could open the cabinets (although we don't open them THAT much), but you had to swing the light out of the way. You are the second person that has made that comment about these tiles. The window is out to a covered back porch where we entertain, the slats give a lot more privacy. although it is a bit of a light "sink". I was advised by some to remove old wallpaper and not replace it with new as it was considered "dated". But this wallpaper just isn't IMHO. We did take down all the wallpaper that was in the kitchen/nook (haven't painted yet) and dining room (have painted, and love it). Thanks again, this is my first post on the HOUZZ forum.

Wow! Great job! Are you still thinking of glazing them, or just keeping them white? Either way, it is a terrific change.

Your "Before" laundry room cabs look like mine . . . yuk! I want to paint mine white, too. From the looks of it, you put in new cabs, though. Very nice job! Congratulations!!

That is a great transformation. Did you prime first and what kind of paint did you use. And what finish on the paint?
I love everything but maybe I would add hardware to the two fake drawers just to look uniform.

Thank you so much ladies. I am so happy with the outcome. I have to get my kitchen done by the 16th because my oldest son is graduating high school that day and we have out of town family coming. We are also having a huge party on the 17th so I have been working so hard on the kitchen.

lyban, that is a GREAT idea on putting hardware on the two fake drawers. I hate how they look but putting hardware on would look really good. I sanded the cabinets to where the finish is just about off. My paint guy told me I didn't have to do that but I wanted to. I am using an orbital sander. I then cleaned and primed with Binser shellac primer. He suggested that primer and I have been very pleased. I sanded before putting the first coat of paint on. I then painted SW Alabaster (but had it mixed by Farrell Calhoun) in oil based, semi gloss. Sanded after first coat of paint and I painted three coats. I did use a 4 inch foam roller and an ox hair brush. I thought about using satin finish on the kitchen but decided against it. I figure that the semi gloss would hold up so much better especially with three boys.

I do not know if I am going to do a glazing. I am going to wait until I have the kitchen done and the doors back on before I decide. I really love how the laundry room looks and would not want to glaze in there. So, we will see.

Thanks again and I will post pictures once the kitchen gets done. I am back to work!!!!!!

It looks AMAZING! I had the pinkish, oak cabinets in my house as well and we painted them. It is so cool what a little paint can do! We also put pulls on the fake drawers because it looked weird to me without them.

As for a glaze, I like how they look right now! Good luck with your kitchen. It is a big undertaking, but so worth it!
