OMG Laundry Room Finished! Before and After Pics.

Well I can't believe after almost 3 months my laundry room is pretty much finished and I never thought we would see this day.

Many of you were a great help in making project come to life by sharing your thoughts - so thank you.

As you can see in the before pictures - it was a mess and my husbands office. So we flipped it to a main floor laundry which is soooo helpful. With being a Mom of 4 kids having the laundry room on our main level is monumental to my work load. Its a beautiful room and it almosts - I stress almost - makes laundry enjoyable.

Not only did my DH give me his office space to help me out (he offered - I never asked! Greatest guy!)he did all the plumbing, electrical and he built the entire cabinet and doors by hand, sheet by sheet and he did an amazing job. I love that they are one of a kind and he says 'built with love'!

Wall color - very close to BM Mexican Tile

Cabinet color - Behr - Tahoe.

PS: All the doors are slightly open as we still need to attach our magnetic closers. :)

jillsee - thank you! It's actually a cheap-o Home Depot vanity/sink combo. This bathroom is not used a lot and we figured if our icky builder-grade cabinets lasted as long as they have, surely this would last awhile, too. :) I'm quite happy with the look and the whole thing has a pretty substantial feel to it, especially compared to what we had in there before. Plus, it was several inches less deep than the previous cabinet and really opens up the space a lot. When we re-do the master bath, we'll spring for higher quality cabinetry. But this vanity works really well for this space.

Domino3 We got the vanity from Lowes and modified it a bit. I changed out the hardware from the brushed it came with to more substantial chrome knobs. It actually came with a different beige countertop/sink but I really wanted a white marble countertop with rectangular sink, so I removed the countertop it came with. I found a rement of Georgia Cherokee Marble at a local fabricators and actually found the sink online. We had the vanity installed and then the marble countertop installed on top about a week later. It has five drawers that open, which is great. I love having the space for toilet paper, hand towels, lipstick, etc. I actually had a hard time finding a rectangular sink to fit in it,(it wouldn't fit the typical 18x12) so I thought I might have to take out the top two drawers and just make those fronts, but luckily I didn't have to do that! I know this probably sounds like a lot of work, but I spent endless nights searching vanities online and didn't find a thing. This one was just the style I wanted (all drawers, shelf on bottom, up on legs) and I ended up spending less doing this with my own countertop, etc than I would have going with a typical vanity/furntiure company.

Thanks!! I did prime!! My goal was to make it look as if the cabinets came white, and not "hey...I painted them and you can tell!!!" My How-To: 1) Took down the cabinets and sanded with a black & decker mouse sander 80 grit. 2) Vac all the sandings (very important!!) 3) Primed with SW Prep Rige Pro Block Primer 4) Sanded again with a 220 grit 5) Vac 6) Primed again 7) Sanded AGAIN with 220 8) Vac 9) Applied 2 coats SW Pro Classic Alabaster (its self-leveling so it helps for a smoother cleaner finish) Dry for a few days then added hardware I also found I had a small gap along the sides where the cabinets met the wall and ceiling. So I ended up sealing it with latex caulk. A very easy step, yet make a HUGE difference, in my opinion.

thanks! And here's the other suction-cup wall pocket intended for the bathroom that I pressed into service. Before the flashlights stood on that section of the shelf. You had to reach around the tape dispenser to get to them, and they'd fall over, etc. (bcs you were usually reaching for them in the dark) Yay for heavy-duty Scotch mounting strips! also note where the hammer is. If I'd put it on the strip at the top, it would have taken up the entire strip. At first, I just left it standing on its head in the corner, but I wanted that space for the electric screwdriver, and I didn't like that it was loose. I'd purchased a 7"-long magnetic strip, so I put it deep in the triangle area, where it's hard to store anything else, and stuck the hammer to it. Keeps the hammer out of the way, in the same spot always, and it won't fall over, etc. Also note the gap BEHIND the drawer unit, and the note on the wall. In that gap are some things that I wasn't willing to get rid of but may not need anytime soon--like extra bleach pens, extra trash-can bags, and the magnetic strips that go w/ the blackout curtains. And on the left, Command hooks (and some other off-brand stick-on cup hooks) for the extension cords--this is really having a big effect, too.

HC, I can see why you are so very happy. It's gorgeous. What a labor of love. I noticed the little heart your hubby added in the valance above the W/D and one of your little dirty laundry makers in the background of another picture too. You are so very lucky. I'm sure you'll enjoy laundry much more now with such a beautiful room to do it in.

BTW, speaking of DHs, mine actually changed the light bulb in his closet! We are making progress.

your new room is really lovely..i like the painted cabinets..i have oak in mine and my colors are similar to yours..but the vanilla color would be so much prettier than the oak i have..(came with the house) I might just decide to paint..thanks for the inspiration....even saved a couple of your pictures to remind me

What a great layout and efficient use of space! I love the cute little heart cutout in the valance over the shelves. It's little details like that that can make a room sing.

I will be sharing them with my husband also as it will make him feel great too.

Susan - I have to admit the counters are not granite (I wish) nor formica. It is a piece of laminate that I purchased from a store selling slightly damaged goods at a fraction of the cost. We ended purchasing 12 feet of it for $40 and I loved the pattern on it so much when we saw it and the little spot of damage ended up simply being cut off.

hey_j - For the wall color I mentioned it was very close to BM's Mexican Tile it is because I actually don't know the name of the paint color. I went to the Habitat for Humanity Store which sells used household renovation items (perhaps some of you have one in your community). Anyways I went to this store as I wanted some antique style door handles (which I found for $1.00 each!) and while I was there I found this can of paint for $8.00 - guess it was a mistint from some store that was donated to Habitat and I just had to jump on it and turned out great. I went through my BM swatches and found it to be very close to BM Mexican Tile.

Originally I painted the cabinets Desert Tan by BM and it looked HORRIFIC! LOL so I had to repaint them all over again YIKES! But it was totally worth it as the Tahoe color is so soothing I love it.

What is so great about my husband making these cabinets is that it was his first time making anything like it and I think he did a wonderful job. Also by doing this we did it at a fraction of the cost and it has all the little personal touches from him - the little heart on the shelf valance etc etc.

Mustang - I love the light fixture too. It was left here by the previous owners who are my husbands parents. They had this light hanging by a chain link about the stairs and the scale was all wrong so we removed the chain link - put it in a smaller area flush to the ceiling and it is just perfect now. I am thinking the fixture is about 30+ years old and has a beautiful 'antiquey' feel to it.

That is truely amazing! What a talented hubby and you too for picking out all those gorgeous elements that look so beautiful together. I keep scrolling back and forth and it's just fabulous what you've done. I'm trying to figure out what you did to the left of the window. Did you add drywall there? I can't quite tell.

Thanks Lindy - actually to the left of the window is a single door floor to ceiling cabinet to house my vacuum.

I also have another one for my ironing board and a doulbe door for all my linens. It is nice to finally have a place for these things I have been tripping over for years.
