Guest Bath (almost) finished - Before and After Pics

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted here often but I have read just about everything on this forum. We just re-did our guest bath and I literally couldn't have done it without you all. I'm so grateful for the great information and all the inspiration I've gotten from everyone here.

I know that seeing pictures really helped us so I thought I would share some of ours. A little background...the house was built in 1987 and we've lived here for 10 years. The bath was original to the house and was apparently done with the cheapest, builder-grade materials they could come by.

The bathroom is 5x8 (including the tub area) and the door leading into the bath is set on a diagonal, which eats into the floor space.

Since this is a guest bath, our goal was to make this into something like a nice hotel bathroom. We had a limited budget and ended up spending about $2500 altogether. (We will also be hiring Miracle Method to refinish the bath and surround for an additional $1000 soon.)

Okay, on to the pictures.

BEFORE:

The faucet in the picture below is what the got the whole project going. The old, ugly one broke and once we replaced it, I decided we HAD to redo the rest of the bathroom to go with it. Ha!

AFTER

Love this thing. It's a towel hook we put on the wall behind the door. The hooks fold up into the rack when not in use.

Nice! I'd stay at your hotel. It looks great and everything you picked goes perfectly with the faucet! :-) I, too, love that towel hanger. Where did you find it?

hey_j - For the wall color I mentioned it was very close to BM's Mexican Tile it is because I actually don't know the name of the paint color. I went to the Habitat for Humanity Store which sells used household renovation items (perhaps some of you have one in your community). Anyways I went to this store as I wanted some antique style door handles (which I found for $1.00 each!) and while I was there I found this can of paint for $8.00 - guess it was a mistint from some store that was donated to Habitat and I just had to jump on it and turned out great. I went through my BM swatches and found it to be very close to BM Mexican Tile. Originally I painted the cabinets Desert Tan by BM and it looked HORRIFIC! LOL so I had to repaint them all over again YIKES! But it was totally worth it as the Tahoe color is so soothing I love it. What is so great about my husband making these cabinets is that it was his first time making anything like it and I think he did a wonderful job. Also by doing this we did it at a fraction of the cost and it has all the little personal touches from him - the little heart on the shelf valance etc etc. Mustang - I love the light fixture too. It was left here by the previous owners who are my husbands parents. They had this light hanging by a chain link about the stairs and the scale was all wrong so we removed the chain link - put it in a smaller area flush to the ceiling and it is just perfect now. I am thinking the fixture is about 30+ years old and has a beautiful 'antiquey' feel to it.

Lovely bathroom. Did you use a schluter system for the entire shower or just the floor and drain? FWIW I like your bath so much we've been using it as a basis for our Master remodel. The color we selected for our cabinetry is a bit deeper brown and we are opting for a solid gray shower tile by Foussana. The difficulty we are having is finding a faux marble tile for the floor that doesn't look either lifeless or doesn't have a repeating pattern. Your floor tiles are very nice although I'd prefer either matte or honed on the floor. Sadly neither of those finishes ever seem to have the depth and wow factor of the gloss tile in your bath. I can't find a dealer in our State with your brand although we are still searching. We may end up with real Marble on the floor but that's not my first choice. Thanks for sharing your photos and details of your build. We already feel your pain on the cost and time frame!

Thanks for all your comments. I really appreciate them. So based on the suggestions, I think I would like to try changing the striped canvas art to be behind the couch and cover that large wall. Here is an idea of how it would look (made with only image editor) The canvas is 48x48, hope is okay for that wall Then take my time to fill the wall above the console with art/pictures that mean something to us (family, places. music, etc.) in different frame sizes and forms to avoid being too square with TV and mirror. I will take my time with that :) Definitely liked the idea of bringing a bigger lamp to the console table.. what a change! Thank you!! I will get another one :) I love the idea of painting the candle holders in orange.. will try. They belonged to my husband's grandparents... need to check I'm not a big fan of 'faux' plants, so I was considering a live one, but by the window next to the mirror instead of infront the mirror - here are my thoughts This is the bar cart we had in mind.. is quite expensive ($600!!) from Crate and Barrel This option, maybe with basket w/pillows and throws next to the plant? and then have a console table infront the dinning window and but our liquor there? Window treatments - at the beginning we wanted to leave the windows open to appreciate the back yard (we plan to have nice flowerbeds, etc), but the Texas sun is too strong to leave the windows with nothing.. I am trying to find something that will provide shade, but will allow to look outside and see the backyard as well. We put bamboo shades in the dining room that I plan to frame with curtains later on (see last pic). Will those go in the living room as well? I bought these, but was thinking to return them... I like them, just did not find a 'good wall' for them. what do you think? Once again, thank you!

Very nice you should be very proud, and I really like that floor tile you put down. It has every color in it but just so subtle. My aunt used a very similar style tile in her bathroom but more on the ivory side and I searched all over for it but never found it. It is a beautiful tile. Congrats on a job well done. Oh one day I will be lucky enough to post my "finished bath" but I am still putting the final touches on it. Isn't it something when you put a new something in your room and you want to throw everything else out! Congrats, job well done!

Nicely done. I'd say you achieved your hotel like goal. Very clean and fresh looking. The towel rack and floor are great.

What an awesome job! Love your towel holder! That new floor is just lovely! We had the same old floor in our master bath, bedroom & laundry; complete with the dusty-rose matching toilet, sink and shower! How awesome it was so finally get a white toilet! Your new space is beautiful!

The backsplash is a slate mosaic I picked up at Lowe's. We did attach it directly to the drywall but I kind of wish we hadn't. Since it isn't gauged, the tiles are different heights. PLUS, our walls have texture on them. So when you're looking at it, there are some that are taller than others. If I had it to do all over again, that's the one thing I probably would've done differently. But I still like it.

Where did you get your vanity? I love that nice cinnamon color.

jillsee - thank you! It's actually a cheap-o Home Depot vanity/sink combo. This bathroom is not used a lot and we figured if our icky builder-grade cabinets lasted as long as they have, surely this would last awhile, too. :) I'm quite happy with the look and the whole thing has a pretty substantial feel to it, especially compared to what we had in there before. Plus, it was several inches less deep than the previous cabinet and really opens up the space a lot.

When we re-do the master bath, we'll spring for higher quality cabinetry. But this vanity works really well for this space.

Gotta say - LOVE what you've done with your guest bath. I particularly like the look of the oval mirror and the towel hooks - It all just works together so well.

ah yes, those new faucets really do cause alot of trouble for the rest of the room, don't they? :)

you've put together the look of a very *nice* hotel bath! I'm sure your guests will enjoy their stay.

Your bathroom is my hall bathrooms fraternal twin. I have been doing updates gradually so I don't have an actual before pic.

I absolutely love your results! Did you use all satin nickel for your fixtures?

Thanks everyone. Sorry I haven't responded sooner...I haven't been on the forum in a little while.

DesignHelp - the vanity is 30.5" wide and we got it at Home Depot.

Camaro - Yes, we used all satin nickel. It's not all the same manufacturer but everything goes well together.
