bar cart is fine. artwork is totally up to you. now is the time to start your collection. you want to go out, locally or on line and get the real thing. even if you get popular ones you can afford too get something original that will give your own spin to it. no need to buy big box stuff. I have a home full of stuff from Charity shops, auctions, estate sales. you can also get offf etsy and saatchiart and many other online stores. make sure it does not glicee or canvas art. some examples of common ones, there are many more to choose.

Try to use some things that mean something to you. I have hung thing like older maps, printed dishtowels, interesting mirrors... Try to use some unusual decor.

I don't think you should rush buying art. Pieces will present themselves to you over time and you will be grateful for the wall space to hang them. The horizontal striped painting does seem a bit high to me. You have a lovely living room. Brava!

What about the candle pillars? Is changing their color to red, orange or blue necessary or not?

Lookin good! Yes, I think it's a great idea to spray paint the candle pillars orange. Just like groupings, I like to see odd groupings in color as well. So, I first see the orange pillow, orange in the art and not another "third" orange. I think the third orange item would look cohesive. Also, I like to see hints in the room. If you decide on a bar cart, I think an orange ice bucket, decanter, etc would be nice. As far as the possible art behind the sofa, I think this would be a fine wall to put personal framed and some matted photos. All in matching frames.

BTW...yes, I think the art is a bit too high and it looks in the photo too far on the left. Measure to be sure it's center. Oh...if you do a "bar cart" I would suggest something with closed storage and something quite different from the other cabinet. Taller would be nice because the same size (slightly off) would look worse than much taller.

What a lovely room. For the finishing touches I would let it grow organically as you find things you love-- like the art, bar cart etc. Have you thought about some curtains or other window coverings? They can really finish a room by providing some extra color and texture. I do like Mariel's suggestion of a large floor plant too. Re the painting over the console, you might try moving the large lamp from next to the sectional onto the console. (Or get another more colorful large lamp ). I think it might it "ground" the painting and help it relate to the chest. It is possible the painting looks like it's high because the lamp currently on the console is on the small side. You have a really nice room already though. Everything else is icing on the cake.

Yes, wait to find what really works for you for your art. I'd avoid placeholders.

I don't think you need to lower that other painting - it balances out the tv, which is unavoidably high due to the fireplace mantle.

So based on the suggestions, I think I would like to try changing the striped canvas art to be behind the couch and cover that large wall. Here is an idea of how it would look (made with only image editor)

The canvas is 48x48, hope is okay for that wall

Then take my time to fill the wall above the console with art/pictures that mean something to us (family, places. music, etc.) in different frame sizes and forms to avoid being too square with TV and mirror. I will take my time with that :)

I'm not a big fan of 'faux' plants, so I was considering a live one, but by the window next to the mirror instead of infront the mirror - here are my thoughts

Window treatments - at the beginning we wanted to leave the windows open to appreciate the back yard (we plan to have nice flowerbeds, etc), but the Texas sun is too strong to leave the windows with nothing.. I am trying to find something that will provide shade, but will allow to look outside and see the backyard as well. We put bamboo shades in the dining room that I plan to frame with curtains later on (see last pic). Will those go in the living room as well?

I bought these, but was thinking to return them... I like them, just did not find a 'good wall' for them. what do you think?

I wouldn't move the large piece of art. I don't think it is too high and as long as it is centered on the wall, it looks fine. And too many small photos or items on that wall would be distracting with the TV.

Yes to a larger and taller lamp there and it's fine if it covers up a bit of the painting. Paint the large candlesticks if you want (maybe the orange you have in the sofa pillow) and add a large, low wooden or copper bowl in the center. You have some nice Orange touches going on and I would continue that with a few small accessory pieces on the shelves.

I personally don't like a lot of personal family photos on the walls in common areas. Maybe a few small ones on a table or shelf but that's all. I would use a pretty round shaped mirror there and reserve for another piece of fabulous art when you find it.
