Need more layout help please! Ikea kitchen

We are so close to starting demo, but just can't seem to get our layout set. It's sooooo frustrating! We need some more eyes and advice, please fellow GW'ers.

Our main problem is that we know we would really like to get a speed oven (30"). We only have 2 walls to work with in our kitchen. With our range, we really would like to have enough counter (landing space) around it and not make it too crowded. We need to have a pantry as well, so it feels like our only option for the speed oven is to put it in the island. We'd rather not have an oven so low but don't know what else to do. Will we regret it? Hate it? Can you see anywhere else in the kitchen we can put it, that maybe we are missing?

Here is the layout with measurements. The island will be L shaped but IKEA doesn't have a great way of showing one solid piece for that so you just have to pretend that it's all nice and not a mess like in the pic.

The right wall looks blank in the photo, but it is where our china cabinet and family photos are. We hope to eventually have that be a Stage 2 remodel and have a built in china cabinet/bar area, but that will be a couple years down the road. We can't really put anything on that wall now, as we won't be able to complete it so it's really an all or nothing, which is why we can't put the oven on that wall.

Can you put the oven into the pantry stack? No reason (with some Ikea hacks of course) you can't keep food above and below an oven. Or perhaps a tall oven cabinet next to the dishwasher? You've got so much counter space it seems silly to bend for an oven!

some of the flaws are software-driven and some are because you haven't figured out your major zones and traffic flow yet. Using freehand kindergarten crayon sketches you could overcome both these flaws. This means I'm telling you to step back from the planning tools and focus on the big picture, broad strokes, area per area, general area, rough thinking. Many layout quandaries are worsened when people start using software (cabinet fantasizing software).

You have 52" aisle at your tightest spot facing the fridge door, so the other aisle space must be very wide. In some circumstances, aisles can be as little as 36", and 39", and 42", and when the aisle is slender one can enjoy pivoting or standing in the center and being able to reach to both counters, transferring things from one counter to the other. This is f.y.i.; my writing this out is not a recommendation to move your island over.

Since I cannot see your house, its normal traffic flow, I cannot comment about what to consider. Two doors are shown. Guess what they hide.

Thanks bmorepanic. His coffee pot sits above the DW and currently the DW is perpendicular to the range in the same corner. We are always in each other's way and it is driving me crazy! Hubby is also upset about losing his above the refrigerator wine rack. So maybe I can put that over at the bar as well. So microwave, paper plates and a sink over there? A trash can over there would be perfect for trash and for recycling. The aluminum cans would definitely end up over there. I think you are right about the prep sink in the island. I wouldn't really use it for prep, I would only use it for draining pasta. I am ready to start over on the island. I don't like it right now. So are you saying 36'' 4 drawer on the end facing the range? I can't figure out how to make the island look interesting. I have seen so many amazing ones out here on GW. Well I actually purchased a 32'' undermount single bowl. I HAD to buy something for my ''going on 3 years'' project. That is why I left the cabinet as just a 36'' cabinet. I could cut it down to 33'' but I am trying to keep down the modifications as I am a total DIY rookie. I forgot to put in this photo of the view of our kitchen from the family room. Taking down the wall in between was the best thing we ever did. You can see in the pic that the wall perpendicular to the refrigerator wall is deep and serves as my very messy desk.

I'm just talking out loud - maybe some stuff applies and maybe it doesn't. I'm looking at the 42" aisles - they are less than the recommended minimum of 48" for a multi-cook kitchen. Some people are sensitive to stuff like that and some aren't. But I think about what cooking with each other AND the swarm in the aisles would be like ... People take the shortest route all the time - its not necessarily the same as the route that would make you happiest. So, there is a certain pile-up of stuff that clogs the route to other stuff - again a little uncertain of "The Way of The Swarm". BUT the ref and the drinks ref create a pile-up on the dining room side, clogging that aisle. The same clog might explode through the work area if DW doors are open and get in the way of table setting operations. People setting the table would need to be under extreme duress (aka, parental intimidation) to walk the dishes around the outside edge of the island instead of cutting through the work zone to the informal dining. It makes for a challenge. I'd be tempted to go more like the below (just an idea). It sorta shows two island shapes, one dotted, one solid - and it certainly would need more thought. So - instead of butler's pantry, I'm thinking scullery. Dish storage can be in wall cabinets above the sink and in one section of the pantry if you've got a lot. The ref moves back out into the perimeter and becomes twins with a nice fat aisle in front - complete with micro for reheating leftovers or melting sandwiches. It has 3 decent work areas plus a 4th in the scullery. It does not solve the cut through traffic to the informal dining, but takes away some of the strain in the aisle. The scullery can be devoted to a bar without impacting the main kitchen. The pantry area can certainly be enclosed and either look like this or push the doorway back over almost to the dining room wall and have one wall of regular cabinets and one wall of 12" deep shelves. It might help start some other thoughts. I'd also try an "L" shape with the leg on the dining side (runs away)

Thanks laxsupermom! That a fantastic work surface and so utilitarian. Its simply gorgeous and I love the side island storage, too. Is that your kitchen? If so, would you mind sharing a few of the mechanics/engineering details of your pull out table? Also, when you had mentioned built-ins on the"remaining" side. The green wall or the exterior? That's similar to what I have in my mind. I just have a hard time putting all the little pieces together. Odd shaped items are things like building plans, giftwrap, wallpaper, rolled artwork and canvases. Thanks for the laugh on the bottles- I used to house sit for a liquor distributor and Distillery owner, so "Dive Bar" indeed. I probably would only have between 8-10 no more than that. Thanks for posing such great questions to help me think more about the intended use. Big ideas small space(?) - the small homes forum? or are you referring to something different. let me know. 4) The 18" pull-out drawer to the right of the sink would be for the garbage can. I understand that it would hit the dishwasher; just can't really think of a way around it. Use a 15" trash pull-out, with 3" of filler. I have a 12" trash pull-out and it is sufficient for our family of 5. You'll also need filler between the DW and corner. You could use a second corner susan, with a 6" slot beside the sink for cutting boards or sheets pans, and have an under sink trash pull-out, although you might need a single sink with offset drain. The DW would be 12" from the corner, so no filler necessary.

Do you have 30" to the right of the DW? Or can you make 30" in that area by putting the DW on the other side of the sink.? Are windows set in the wall or can they be moved? If you were able to put a full pantry also in that space to the right of the DW and include your oven in it then it might also give symmetry to the two walls by balancing out the bulk of the fridge on the end of the other wall.
Just a suggestion.
Does the island really have that funny cut-out corner or is that a software design issue.
If you wanted to expand (not move ) the island you could continue the leg that is towards the fridge another few inches to give you a 48" aisle. What is the aisle at the other leg going towards the sink?

The range seems rather far from the sink and rather close to the fridge. Does the sink really need to be way over there? I know sinks at the window are very common, but they're not obligatory. (Alternately, does the range need to be over on that wall?)

Also, you get an illogical flow with this setup. Most food that you cook comes from the fridge, but a lot of it needs to be washed or otherwise prepped near the sink (the trash is usually near the sink, so meat gets unwrapped and the wrappers thrown away, etc., over there). So a more logical flow would put the sink somewhere between fridge and range, instead of the range between fridge and sink as you have here.

What do you plan to use the island for? You could perhaps put the sink and trash pullout on the island, and then the range around the corner on the wall that currently holds the sink, to get the more logical flow. Of course, for that to work, you need to pay attention to Davidro's comment about not having humongous aisles.

Probably just not seeing it but, beyond the software issues, what is the advantage of the L shaped island? It looks like it is fighting the space.

My guess is that you don't want to move windows, doors, plumbing etc.
I would orient the island so that you have a long island facing the sink and the window. That way, the view from the island is through the window, which will be pleasing. Another option is to put a square shaped island, then you can sit on two sides of the island.

L shaped island does not look good, (IMHO) and it will not function well because you will be squeezed in the L.

I would move the sink to the left of the window as you look at it so the distance from the sink to frig is reduced.

Is your window drawn properly? That is a rather low from the ceiling window. Did there used to be soffits that you are taking out? If you are taking out the soffits and not raising/enlarging the windows, I think it will look odd. You may have to spend some money and raise the window appropriately....

I have a similar L with a center island. Frig/range then to sink. It actually works quite well for me. I don't need/want the water source on the island.

The skinny uppers next the hood does not cut it. It needs to be balanced with long horizontal shelves perhaps...

I have my speed oven mounted under the counter on the island. It works fine for me. This is not so popular here, however. Kitchen design is a balance of esthetics and function. What functions you accept may not suit another user. Pay attention to what functions/esthetics are important to you not what others think are important to you.

10 years ago, the rage was the two level island. I loved my 1 level island then and I would not budge from the position. Now, one level is more popular I also LOVE my island without a sink on it. Again, not a popular choice. But this works better for me.....

Another option for your kitchen, since it is so big is to fill the left side wall (where the frig is) with solid wall of cabinets/frig/pantry/wall oven. Then you have the island and 17 ft counter space to work with. This is a popular European plan. They often fill one of their walls completely.
