Would like some combinations for toile/beadboard bathroom?

Hi all

I really like the look of beadboard and toile in a bathroom. Would love some possible combinations ie

paint above board and toile shower curtain/curtains. should I do white tiles in the shower and black accent tiles. Should I do a white vanity and white top? What about the floor. I am notorious for being too matchy-matchy. If I do black and white toile shower curtain and window treatments, what would be some paint options for above the beadboard.

Beadboard will be about 2/3 of the wall height. Standard 8 ft. ceiling.

I may be crazy but I like the idea of a green with the black and white ... either grass green or a lime green, leaning towards lime. I would do the beadboard white and the walls green. Can't wait to see what you do!!

There was a fabulous red bedroom on rate my space. The walls were red and the toile was black and white. I was going to do my guest bath that, but chickened out and decided on a different toile. It's a sand, black and white priint. Here's the sample. I'm sorry my bathroom is being put together as we speak. The shower and window curtains are in the toile pictured, the walls are the lighter stripe of the toile which is an exact match of BM's Yorkshire Tan, the flooring is black and white, the beadboard will be white 4 ft. up and I have an antique cherry dresser that will be the vanity. I'm sorry it's not finished so I can't show you a complete photo. Here are pieces as they come together.

heidia, while the current bath we just did has only had the beadboard (wider version) for just over a year now, I have had it in previous baths. The bathroom I grew up in had it. There is a difference in the quality of what you put up. If you put up the pine boards and not the thin laminate type stuff, it will last a lot longer. Also, give it some good coats of paint to seal out the water. It will last a very, very long time. Probably longer than the grout would if you put in tile. We also bounced back and forth between tile and wood for this bath. For the look we wanted it was a LOT of tile (and more costly a lot of trim tile). Good luck, Kalindi

My $.02: I don't think picture-frame wainscoting is stylistically appropriate or practical for a bathroom. Also, painted MDF could seem cheap, especially in a home with solid wood wainscoting in other rooms, and I'm not sure how it would hold up it in a room/climate that is subject to mold. While I like true beadboard in vintage baths, it's often used just because it's trendy, fast, and cheap (if you use any of the various imitation beadboard products). Beadboard would look good with your Memoirs toilet and pedestal sink, but may seem too cottage-y for the rest of your house. My first preference would be for tile wainscoting, which need not be expensive in a small space if you shop around and do the tiling yourself. Are you really sure you can't use it? Unless the seasonal movement is really extreme (in which case you must have problems with all of your walls and wainscoting), you should be able to use tile as long as you have the proper surface, use small tiles, and flexible grout. (I'm no expert, but that's what I've been told.) Another option would be to simply install a chair rail around the perimeter of the room. You could then use different colors for the upper and lower walls, or paint the lower wall and use wallpaper or stenciling on the upper part (although extreme house movement could sabotage wallpaper).

Personal preference, really; if you absolutely must have a hard number, try 48" or 54" but it's just as likely that neither will fit your room just right. :-) There are a lot of things you can use as a reference point for the cap rail topping the wainscot (to be obnoxious and persnickety, it's only a "chair rail" when it is in a living area and placed at a height to keep a chair from banging the wall): a windowsill, the top of the toilet, the top of a vanity backsplash, a medicine cabinet frame or window frame (1/3 of the way up a window frame or medicine cabinet frame is a very classic relationship), above or below wall outlets/switches. Tape a string up around the wall at different heights to get an idea of which one works for you. Consider, also, how your baseboard is going to work - if you are going to put the beadboard on top of a baseboard, behind it sitting on the floor, behind it but raised above the floor (use scraps of beadboard to fill the dead space behind the baseboard). This will affect your finished height. Sheer practicality and avoidance of waste is a pretty important thing to consider too, so if you can use a half or a third of a plank/sheet instead of, say, three-fifths (leaving two-fifths to waste, unless you have a use for it elsewhere), that's better. It is often more cost-effective to get the full size planks/sheets and cut them than to buy the smaller "wainscot size" ones. In my previous house's master bath, I went for 2/3 of the way up the walls, allowing us to use half-lengths of the 8' long beadboard planks to minimize waste: 48" tall beadboard on top of 5.5" baseboard (seam disguised with an inexpensive trim piece called a "base cap") and topped with 1.5" cap rail = 55"; exactly 2/3 would have been 60" but the beautiful wallpaper border that went above the wainscot brought the total up to just the tiniest tad under 61". I had originally wanted to use 1/3 up the window frame for the cap rail's reference line but the beadboard planks would have had to be about 54", which would have doubled the amount I would have needed to purchase!

I would get the bathroom done first and then think about the bedroom. You will want your style to flow from one room to another, but that doesn't mean you need to carry the beadboard over, and some rooms can have a little different take on your style. A good place to get inspiration is to look at good examples of colonial / vintage style and avoid the "faux" - which is why I am not so fond of the glazing in the pic. I find going back to the past and avoiding the trendy helps create a more timeless look. Even though I said avoid the "faux" I do mix an occasional Hobby Lobby or similar decor piece in, though I like to walk through the many antique stores in my area to add some truly old pieces. I've picked up pretty, but very inexpensive mismatched china for the walls in my kitchen. (Unfortunately, I am old enough that some of the decor I bought when first married is showing up in some of these places - apparently having hit vintage status.) I also have used the beadboard wallpaper - especially in areas that I want beadboard but either want to think about it, or need to change something else first. I have real beadboard in my laundry room which is right across the hall from the powder room and I am never hit with a feeling of "this looks so fake next to the real thing". However, I would use the real beadboard in the bathroom.

Well it's not toile but it's the B/W and green as suggested by judyindisguise. This is my powder room. We did a partial re-do with black beadboard and marble mosaic floor. I made the curtain and have seen toile patterns in a similar color. If you click on the photo there are more views in the album

No beadboard, but we have a yellow and red toile bath

Here's our foyer bath. Artwork is now framed in black, but it's got the beadboard and toile above the wainscoting.

Mailynn, I personally think it's best not to wallpaper ... I did (I have the red and white like nanny :) And at first I LOVED it, but 2.5 years later - while still pretty, I am bored to tears. I would never tell DH that since it cost a pretty penny to do ... but the options of paint are endless. You can change out a shower curtain etc. Just my 2 cents. I am sure whatever you choose will be stunning.

Thanks everyone, I can't wait either. Every week I ask DH, "Is it time to convert the dresser?" Poor guy is sick of me asking. It won't be long now. I wish once that bath is done the house would be ready to move in, but of course it won't. DH is taking it room by room for the finishing touches, not finishing as would say a regular builder and subs. Completely finishing that bath will be so exciting since it's the very first room I planned a design for.

As promised, I'm going to take step by step notes and photo's of the vanity/dresser conversion for those who want to attempt this in the future. At the prices these converted dresser/vanities sell for retail, I told DH I know what he can do when he retires. LOL

My french country kitchen before I remodeled was red/cream toile wallpaper with a red chairail and wall below. Here's a pic that was taken right before demo:

The paint color below wallpaper was a more muted red than it appears on my screen.

They are pricey, aren't they? When we were looking for a dresser/sink vanity for the girl's bathroom room I did a lot of googling to get ideas. Some of them really fetched a rather high amount. We bought a dresser off Craigslist for $100 and did it ourselves. *LOL*

Can't wait to see pics of your conversion, that dresser will make a beautiful vanity!
