Oh, boy! I loved the colors Squirrel did for your home. LOVED them. Your home is beautiful. I hope they still work! Is there anyway you can post a pic of the hospital green?

Off the top of my head, I would imagine that your colors would still work with a green, unless it has some very unusual tones-- but I defer to the expert, when she gets here;-)

Your neighbor's doesn't sound nearly as pretty as yours. If anyone needs to change, they do. LOL I'd love to see a photo of their house.

I don't think you have to worry about changing your color to compliment their house, not unless they are paying your house note!!

In the new neighborhood where I'm moving there are so many different styles and colors of homes and that's what makes the street so pretty and not boring.

I would say that your color sounds neutral enough to go with the neighbor. Unless you were painting your house red or a different green, then you would have to reconsider. Please post pics!

Can you post a pic of squirrels suggestion, I cant remember which house was yours.

Thanks, you all--o.k., brutuses--I always like to promote neighborhood harmony, if possible, and I understand their desire to lighten up their home, I was just concerned about the pastel vs. earth tone juxtaposition. They're lucky because there is a grey-blue on our other side that *really* would look bad next to their home, so maybe we'll be the neutral in between. Will be a very different idiom, though.

gk, here's the thread. Amysrq suggested SH Grey right off, and we went through a veritable plethora of other possibilities, and ended up with the first suggestion :)

Hey fly -- not weighing in on the color (although I relaly liked the look of the warmer taupish colors in the previous thread), but thought I'd toss in a picture of some fab house numbers that I found -- you can get the pattern in vertical or horizontal. If you decide you're in the market, let me know and I'll look up the name of the company we bought them from. Haven't put ours up yet, since we're still deciding what we're going to do to the house, but I have them sitting in the box waiting, and I can't wait to see them up!

I completely understand what you're saying, flyleft and I typically agree. I just can't see a house like yours being anything but a dark, earthy color like you've chosen. In this case, I'd do what's right for your house and ignore the neighbors.

By the way, I've chosen similar colors for my home: BM Ashley Grey for the main body, BM Texas Leather for the Trim, and BM Georgian Brick for the doors.

sarschlos, I LOVE those numbers. Can you tell where you got them? They are so bold. I have been looking for new house numbers and those rock.

Joanna, DWR carries Neutra style house numbers, but I ordered ours from WestOn for a LOT less $$$. They had more styles and finish options, too. I ordered the Ribbon Deep in brushed aluminum finish (I think I went with 8'' numbers -- pretty large but very striking).

I remember this post. There were some pretty color combinations. Can you post a pic of the other homes on each side of you. Techically it shouldnt make a difference unless it was the same color. And even then, it should matter.....but to some of us it does. I think I know how you feel. Last year, my neighbor was tring to pick a house color, she had these horrendous golds all over her house and she asked me for my opinion. I told her I didnt like any of them and my favorite golden color was....Dromedary Camel. Guess what, the next day she asked me if she could paint her house Dromedary Camel. I was not ready to paint for a few years as the house was painted 4 yrs ago by the previous owners. What was I to say? I should have NEVER opened my mouth! Now I feel like I have to pick a totally different color, I think it will look funny to have 2 house similar in color right next to each other. Our homes are fairly close.

I agree with the person that said that there is no reason their color choice should affect yours. Separate homes on separate lots. And they didn't come and check with you before they painted theirs, I am guessing.

sarschlos, those are both wonderful :) Did you get those exact numbers with the dimensionality? I have bronze house numbers I bought that match the bronze windows, and I wouldn't mind staying with that, but I do love the dimensionality...(update, since I refreshed: I checked that site and unfortunately, they don't have a typeface that has a straight top line for the 3 -- I know I sound like a nut but since we have two 3s in our number, I want a straight top line...need to find that)

And the light, too--really great :) VERY similar to what we have in our master bath, actually! As sconces on mirrors. I'd love to find those in bronze for the outside.

elizgonz, how interesting that you chose similar colors :) May I ask, what color is your roof? We have to choose a new roof now too and the colors in our chosen brand are *very* limited. If anyone's interested, I'll link below and I'd *love* opinions...

les, you're right...I actually suggested comparing colors when she mentioned she was planning to paint..but I don't think it's for any selfish reason, just that they are kind of clueless when it comes to the process...she never even thought to get a tester before choosing, and was very glad I had given her the idea--otherwise we would have ended up with something much lighter. It's drying to a slightly deeper tone now, which is very pretty in its own way.

gk, you know I have enough trouble posting my home--I *really* wouldn't feel right posting anyone else's...that Dromedary Camel story is kind of funny, though, I hate to say--you were influential :)

fly -- neither the Neutra nor the Eichler font styles used a straight line on the 3's. Since I was going for a specific mid-century font, I didn't look for anything like that. If you check Eichler Numbers, though, their numbers are mounted on squares, and may work better (although the Neutra numbers make my heart go pitter patter). WestOn offered several different finishes for their house numbers, and a ton of different font styles. Did you look through all of them?

I *love* those styles--it's just for the darn 3s I wanted more angularity. If we'd had different numbers, I would definitely have gone for the Neutra or one of the West-On nos.

I think the color you have chosen is what I would consider neutral and would go with all neighbours.

I think it will be fine Fly. If anything, they will stick out, not you. The Sandy Hook goes so well with your setting. What other colors are going on in your neighborhood? Maybe I should come over and supervise! LOL!

I think your house will be fine in the SHG. I just hope you'll be fine looking at the hospital green. (IMO, one of the worst colors/institutional policies on record.) I drive by a yellow house a few times a week that still makes me wince.

ARGH: I keep missing that I wanted to say thanks to decorpas for your comment right at the start! It's always good to have support for a choice that is still purely theoretical...do you have any thoughts on a roof color? And it's not so much the *color* as the idiom--cottagey vs. modern, iykwim. The houses were all built at the same time, and I guess it's o.k.; it just looked so different yesterday and it gives off a more bucolic happy vibe now, vs. the downer shades of grey, deep red, and green that characterize the PNW :) Guess we'll be the severe modernist neighbor (albeit with sedum aplenty and none of that modernist discipline in the landscape design -- sometimes I see those nouvelle-cuisine gardens and think "now is the time on Sprockets when we plant!" :))

And Lindy and Amy, thanks...I think you're right, maybe, Lindy--cheery definitely sticks out here LOL...It is rather nice to look out on from our master bedroom, though--and the owner came home and said she thought it was too light--I honestly don't think it looks bad at all, just a different "mood". The only greens I can't find a place for in my heart are Kelly and mint green, and sometimes 80s forest green. Other than that I'm very easy wrt green :)

Amy, when I was purchasing the samples at the BM store I commiserated with a saleswoman there--evidently we had fathers who had made similarly horrid house paint choices when we were children--I'm sure it was an element of our being judged when parents came to pick up their daughters after an overnight (see the thread on the other side :))--I really think it was my father's peasant taste combined with his napoleonic autocratic approach to decision making, but the colors he evidently chose without consulting with my mother looked like a circus tent to me--sunshiny yellow with spring green trim, I kid you not. Really traumatizing every time I looked at it.

I'm going to paint up more of the side of the house in the 150% SHG tomorrow just to reassure myself...so what color shingles should I order? (they have cedar shake, and black next to us--but no one sees our roof anyway, so it's nowhere near as high-stakes a choice :))

I totally agree about doing things in context with the neighborhood for a beautiful big picture, but the SHG seems very neutral from here, so I don't see that it would clash really. Not sure what would be the perfect color for hospital green, either : ) What would you be considering instead, that would harmonize better?

Squirrel, it's not that they messed up the landscape--it's more like a different *mood* than a horrible color. They really are trying, it's just--it's like what the PO did to our house--they have a different aesthetic, iykwim. Lots of people are doing this to the "pnw contemporary" houses--trying to make them look more classical/cottagey than what they are, and with us taking our house back to its "roots", thanks to you, I'm just wondering if it will look odd. When I think about it, I've seen it even with the Rummers--finally a generation of people who "get" the houses are buying them and and doing right by them--undoing all the cutification that was imposed upon them by that middle generation. So with them in mind and with your all's support I will stand strong, paint that trim the way it was intended, find those cool sconces and let our modernist flag fly :) (but what color roof?!)

ha ha-- severe modernist neighbor:-) well, worse things have happened, for sure- like hospital green neighbor! Good thing you don't mind their color...your home looks MCM clean lined and inviting. And the colors you picked out are just right...I am not into "doing" a look necessarily, so I think your landscaping works. But, then, I'm not much for discipline in the garden. Plants tend to do their own thing around me.

Roofing-- Oh, geez- It's hard to tell without seeing it photoshopped....but with the Sandy Hook Grey and the style of the home, I'd try either the storm grey, weathered wood or silverwood off the top of my head:-) As much as I like the more staggered look you get with color variation, I'm drawn to the cleaner look on your home. Kind of sleek and architecturally interesting. As I am sure you know, those roofing samples can look really different IRL-- so once you have a few choices, I'd see if you can get some addresses locally to check it out live.

It's very cool that you want to maintain harmony in the neighborhood-- and I think you can still and use your colors. Harmony doesn't necessarily mean similar styles or matching things in my book. So now they're doing cottage happy (or hospital green) and you're doing chic modern (but with a warm feeling). Hospital green, meet SHG. ;-)
