Comments (17)Thank you all! It IS very helpful to know that the answer is truly "it depends"! I had assumed that it would be a mistake to move from the wall oven & cooktop setup to a range, but it sounds like it makes the most sense to go with whichever combination of appliances works best in the space! About resale, we have absolutely no plans to sell anytime soon. However, with my husband's job, the possibility of a work-related move is always in the background. If that happens, we need to sell fairly quickly. Comments (45)I have had gas and electric ranges over the years, but for the last 30+ I have cooked on electric until I moved and our new condo had a gas range. Everyone was all agog over it and told me I would LOVE the gas range that it was so much better than electric. For the last 20 years before our move, I cooked on smooth top electric ranges and loved them! But everyone kept telling me gas was better. Turns out, I DO NOT love the gas range. It doesn't boil water as fast as my electric one did and seems to take forever to preheat the oven. And I've had a hard time adjusting to the fact that if I don't use hot pads to remove my pans off the stove top, I'll burn my hands. And don't leave your stirring spoon in the pot for more than a second if you don't want to burn off a finger or two. My cookies don't rise -and they're either not done enough or too done, can't get it just right like before. AND the worst part is cleaning it! That's the main reason I switched to a smooth top all those years ago - they take a little getting used to the different cleaning method, but when you learn the tricks, they're a breeze compared to the old coil or this gas behemoth! It takes me a good hour to clean around all the burners and try to be careful not to get cleaner or food down those little slots around the sides. And even using a degreaser detergent, it still looks greasy after going over it several times. Give me my smooth top back! . . . where I can just scrap off the burnt on food with a razor blade - or if there isn't anything burnt on, I can just wipe on a little cleaner and polish it off with a paper towel. When wiping down the countertops with a little dish soap, I can include the stovetop and keep it sparkling clean on a daily basis. I have severe arthritis in my hands and moving those heavy grates off the top and then the cleaning around all the little places is just a little too much for me (not to mention getting gunk off the grates). That is why, after 2 1/2 years of trying to get used to it, I have decided to replace my gas range with a brand new smooth top electric range. People tell me I must be CRAZY because I'm the only person they know who prefers electric over gas. The only thing I will miss is turning off the heat immediately when something boils over. So I will have to get used to moving the pan off again. But it's worth it to me to clean up a boil over on the smooth top vs. the gas burner-cover-slots thing. Comparable sales are homes that are similar in size, number of bedrooms and bathrooms and square footage. They rate the condition of the home (Excellent, good, fair, poor)., They make adjustments for differences and estimate the fair market value of your home. They are not looking at the details. It is a big, broad brush. When people come to buy your home they are comparing your home to the other homes that they have seen that are similar in price. They make adjustments based on what they will have to fix and the cost of the repair and the location of the home. A buyer may like your fancy showerhead, but it certainly won't be a great influence on their decision to purchase your home or make them offer you a lot of extra money. Renovations (not maintenance) to your home should be made based on the cost vs the joy it will bring to you. The return on investment is almost always a negative return. Comments (14)Well, the reality of the situation is that I do NOT have the money left to hire someone to recarpet all the floors. I certainly wish I did. I've been renovating this house alone over a year, and have already racked up critical debt. I also don't have any help, so this is a one-man job. As far as refinishing, wood floor purists may be disappointed to see what was underneath (I hauled out the current carpet and underlayment, which was incredibly nasty and a huge job). Most of the floor in the four rooms are okay, but there are some areas that look as if there was some water damage- I don't believe termites, because the location is in the center of the room. It looks like what they did was, schlopped a bunch of wood putty over the wounds to hide and then carpeted everything. There is also some deep fissuring in some areas. I don't quite know if there is some way to fill this so that it would not look horrible when refinished. Certainly the wood putty that is currently there now would have to be chiseled out. It seems to crumble out without a huge amount of difficulty, but then what? If the putty were stained, it would be completely off color. One has to make hard choices and can't always do what is ideal. The truth is a freshly painted floor looks better than this. But if anyone wants to spot me a couple grand for new carpet, I'll be glad to go that route lol....See More- 12 years ago
