My first quilt-pic

I've just finished my first quilt and I'm pleased and excited about it. It is a baby quilt made for DS's college friend's baby. I'm going to wash it today and mail it the first of the week. I was pretty slow with it but I've learned a lot. There are several things that I will do differently next time which will improve the process.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your macro pictures! I'm going to take some myself. Yours are the best macros I've seen so far (but, this is just my first year doing this!)!! I'm certainly not an expert, and don't be surprised if I'm corrected by somebody else, but it looks like portulaca to me. The stems are reddish (check) and the leaves are pointed (check). If it's not portulaca, it certainly has similar characteristics. Don't count it for a weed yet! Wait on the experiences folks to chime in!

Thank you for all the comments! I am hand quilting :) I don't mind some mistakes, they just always seem to look bigger when you've made it yourself, you know? You already know where they all are, so it is the first thing that your eye is drawn to. I was trying to figure out what quilting pattern would highlight the heart. I like the idea of sine waves. I also like the idea of some template hearts, they would go with the theme. I do want to put something in the corners. I was thinking of putting their initials on it somewhere, maybe inside the middle heart ... a flower with leaves sounds nice as well. I guess curvy shapes would look better than straight lines :) I thought of variegated thread as well, but some of the quilt is dark blue, and some is purple so I didn't know which colour to choose. I wasn't sure if I should keep the same colour throughout or change for different fabrics. As I am doing it by hand, its not too difficult to switch over. I didn't think of checking the batting to see how far apart to quilt . . . that's a great tip, thanks! I will try to borrow a camera to post a picture when it is finished. I'd like a copy of the photo for myself as well, as I won't be keeping the quilt. I "birthed" the quilt instead of binding it -- and I turned it right-side out and stitched the opening shut -- took a look and saw the whole thing . . . oooh, goosebumps :)

First of all, I'm sorry for my double posts - I discovered that using the back button posts it again! Lola - I will post pics when I've finished. I have the main portion of the top done now and will be adding a border next. The pattern is Yellow Brick Road, and I'm planning to do stitch in the ditch (mainly because of time constraints). Mary - I have already learned so much from everyone here, and I have so much more to learn! I don't need much more encouragement on the Featherweight :) I think there may be preferred years or other things I should know about before I make the leap, so when I have time to research that a little more I'm sure one will be appearing in my sewing room! Thank you all for your encouragement. I think I'll be posting some other queries in the coming days. I realized today that I should have squared up my small blocks before I joined them, so that is my first issue. I just measured and I'm about 1/8 to 1/4 off. Shall I square prior to borders? I would think so, and how best to do that? I have so much to learn, but I'm enjoying making a start! Thanks again for the welcome and support, and I will post photos! Barbara

Inherited my mothers quilt studio - working on my first quilt!

My Mama passed almost seven years ago, and I am still working on her fabric stash, but with materials used for quilting and also every other type of material one could need. I started quilting about a year before she died, and my first quilt was a Christmas gift for her, I finished in February. I kept company with her as I was quilting and she watched it come together, not knowing it was for her. She had always wanted to make a quilt, and had started the blocks for a Cathedral Windows, inspired by a friend when we lived in Missouri, as state just famous for it's cottage quilt industry. When one drove through the Ozarks, it was commonplace to see them hung out on clotheslines, to catch the eye of passers-by. She had also made some yo-yos but they disappeared sometime and I've never found them. I wish you much enjoyment with your new hobby. I think you'll find yourself close to her spirit as you work, as I find myself close to my mother when I am in my sewing room, handling the fabrics she had saved over the years. I have made about thirty quilts since then, really surprising myself since making ONE quilt was on my bucket list. LOL. Welcome to the forum, and my condolences as well on your mother's passing. BTW, that is one beautiful design you will be finishing. I also have a quilt cat who loves to lay on my blocks and scatter them too. He keeps me company each morning as I sew, and prefers my sewing room to all the others in this house.

Kay, that's adorable! Are those 30's repros you used? The bow tie pattern is perfect for a baby quilt. Congrats on your first, it's beautiful!

Thanks everyone for your kind words and encouragement. I forgot to mention the baby is a little girl. Kay, they are not reproduction fabrics. They have small flowers or patterns. I would like to try some 30's reproductions. I love the ones you have used in your quilts.
Rebecca. the triangles are prairie points that I added between the yellow border and the white one. I like the color they add and they aren't hard to do.

Very cute! I love the prairie points, too. (They're on my to-learn list.) You'll learn something new with every quilt you make -- that's one of the things I enjoy about quilting anyway!

What a wonderful first quilt....or second or third, it would be wonderful for any stage quilter.

You should be so proud of yourself, and I know the baby and her parents will love the quilt and treasure it always.
