I just want to share some of my sprouts pics, taken today in the middle of rain. I hope you're not bored yet looking at these pics!

Now for a question: Does this look like Portulaca seedling to you? Or is this weeds?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your macro pictures! I'm going to take some myself. Yours are the best macros I've seen so far (but, this is just my first year doing this!)!!

I'm certainly not an expert, and don't be surprised if I'm corrected by somebody else, but it looks like portulaca to me. The stems are reddish (check) and the leaves are pointed (check). If it's not portulaca, it certainly has similar characteristics. Don't count it for a weed yet! Wait on the experiences folks to chime in!

Amna, rest assured, it is a big deal when those sprouts start popping up for you. You're a Newbie, and your excitement is wonderful to hear from you and it's so reassuring to you. Those of us that are Veterans on the Wintersowing forum all know that it does work and the biggest problems you encounter are patience and planting out all the seedlings. BUT, we all still distinctly remember our first year Wintersowing and the fears and doubts we had too, until those first beautiful green sprouts showed up. Congrats on your babies, just wait and see, that rush of green will be filling up those other containers soon enough. And I got my first sprouts today as well, and yes it was Alyssum, Alyssum gold dust, a beautiful perennial. The green is starting, slow at first, but once it starts it doesn't stop. Fran

Karen, that's wonderful! My rate is not nearly so good as yours, am hoping some will still sprout of some, don't care too much about some others. I'm not going to bother with pictures at this point, but some are coming along nicely. I planted looks like 27 Jack in the Pulpit, and only one is up with second set of leaves for a couple weeks or more. No others. In many of my containers that have something, I'm not sure what the sprouts are supposed to look like, and I suspect some of my sprouts were stuff in the potting soil or got mixed in the seeds. Some I'm pleased just to get a few if I can bring them through if I settle for that. A few are going like gangbusters. JIP seeds are hard, round, whitish IIRC and just about the same size as peas or a little smaller. Some I've learned what to look for by their "mates" planted nearby in the smaller things. Interesting to watch how it progresses. Some that I rather prize, I'm getting a poor-to-none germination rate. Hope some will gradually poke their little heads up. Anyway, happy for you, tremendous success rate esp since we're the same zone.

Lynne---if you get a hold of me in the fall---I'll probably have seed from those salvias if you want some. daisy08---I try to plant groups of plants in groups of 5 to keep them looking full. Some of the plants take two to three years to develop to there full potential. Just have to be patient with them. They may only look green for a couple of years, but it's worth the wait. I'm also pretty deligent about watering during the hot time of the year. Duane

Lykaon, What a beautiful yard you have...it makes me realize I should really spruce up my edges...mine is way more "rustic", so to speak. I say "YES" to your idea on future hosta beds, you have such an excellent backdrop there for beds. What are your flowering shrubs, Viburnum? Not sure on the Thunderbolt question, it doesn't look quite like mine that I can remember (I lost mine.)....I think mine were more blue, but someone else may have a better thought. Thank you for sharing! Your beds are beautiful! I finally bought Regal Splendor last year after having it on the wishlist year after year...can't wait to see it furl out now! (Eyes are only just now popping up this week here.)

Thank you Donna! I'm glad that the macro looks good because I used a kind of crappy camera. And I'm glad to hear that the seedlings look like portulaca seedling. They just resembles that tiny red weed so much that I had doubt.

Great pics, I love sprouts. They get even more fun to photo after the true leaves start developing too. Congrats on the lupine's I'm still waiting for mine to sprout and I agree looks like portulaca.

Aw thanks! I was going to take a photo of them after they have true leaves. But I am just so excited to have sprouts the first time I WS. So I am going to take pics of the progress :)
